The scene where Alina is left alone in her room in the Little Palace refers back to a conversation she had earlier with Mal about what they learned in the orphanage: Have your emotional breakdowns in private and always have a weapon nearby (and show no weakness, I think?). I loved that! It looks like when she starts to cry, she thinks about Mal and remembers that conversation / their "rules", and goes to search for a weapon.

The crows (Kaz, Jesper, and Inej) are not in the first books (shadow and bone series) They are the main characters in a spin off series (Six of Crows Duology). The spin off takes place two years after shadow and bone. Everything about the crows in the show is brand new.

In Kerch, the country where Kaz and the Crows live, the main religion is the cult of Ghezen; it’s basically capitalism made religion. They worship money, and while slavery is a no no, indentured servitude is super cool. It’s unconscionable for Kerch people to skip on an opportunity to make money, and as good capitalist it’s considered moral for the Kerch to be super sleazy even when they are “good” guys 💅

In the last reaction I wrote a list of the different types of Grisha, but just in case u didn't see here's the list again:
Corporalki- wearing the red keftas, consisting of heartrenders, healers, and tailors. They focus on the human body.
Etherealki- wearing the blue keftas, they control the elements and are considered summoners. (The sunsommoner and darkling fall under this category)
Materialki- wearing the purple keftas, they control different earth related materials.
The embroidery on the keftas determine what kind of grisha you are in each of the categories. For example: heartrenders have red keftas with black embroidery.
Anyways that's it I think. Let me know if theres some things I missed :)

A few more details:
1. Corporalki:
-Heartrenders: They can slow/stop your heart, snatch air from your lungs, etc. Anything to do w/ the human body, they can control but they are specialized in killing. Red keftas with black embroidery
-Healers: are healers lol. Red kefta w/ gray
-Tailors: they can change a person's appearance. They's kinda like plastic surgeons/dermatologists/aestheticians 😆
2. Etherealki:
-Squallers: 🌪Blue w/ silver embroidery
-Inferni: 🔥Blue w/ red
-Tidemakers: 💦Blue w/ light blue
3. Materialki:

The Crows are an amazing part to the show. Inej's batman tendencies, Jespa's showing off and just general good nature, and Kaz's strong leadership just make you want to route for them. There are moments when you're going to think Alina's being an idiot (because it's a YA fantasy, and the mc in those always makes stupid or selfish mistakes they live to regret), and having the Crows storyline makes you want to follow them, especially because the odds are so against them.
I haven't read the book but yeah Alina, compared to the Crows, is boring. Lol. Might be wrong. Please don't hate me XD

yessss, i didn't enjoy the first three books because alina's perspective was SO annoying. but i loved loved loved six of crows because all of the crows are such well thought out characters and every line matters. also there isnt a "chosen one" storyline in the six of crows book, just a bunch of morally grey kids trying to do the impossible with all odds stacked against them. the show really does not highlight how freakin amazing kaz, jesper, inej, nina, and matthias are!!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before but Shadow and Bone (a trilogy) and Six of Crows (a duology) are two separate series of books by Leigh Bardugo. They take place in two different timelines but the plot has been tweaked to integrate the crows into the show.

That comment has me laughing so hard cause there are literally CHAPTERS from Inej’s perspective about how Kaz never sleeps. One of my favorite parts in the “Crooked Kingdom” is Kaz falling asleep and then internally scolding himself for doing so because there is just so much “shady business” to get done.
It's interesting you said Alina put Mel in the friend zone. I interpreted it the other way around, she's in love with him but he put her in the friend zone. Which is completely opposite to how Hollywood usually would portray it. I also haven't read the books and was super confused at first, but I ended up really liking the show.

Having read the Six of Crows & Crooked Kingdom duology, they really cast the perfect actors for Jesper and Inej! I loved the comparison between Inej and Batman guys:-)
Here are all the different types of Grisha:
Etherealki: (controls elements)
- Squallor (wind)
- Inferni (fire)
- tidemaker (water)
- And Alina is a sun summoner
- General Kirigan/the darkling is a shadow summoner
Materialki: (controls materials. Usually referred to as Fabrikators)
- Durasts (metals)
- Alkemi (chemicals)
Corporalki: (have control over the human body)
- Heartrender (controls heartbeats and blood)
- Healers (self explanatory)
- Tailors (very rare. Basically a human Instagram filter)

I haven't read the Shadow and Bone series yet, but I've read the Six of Crows books and I really love how they integrated those characters into the story in the show (which mainly follows the plot of the first Shadow and Bone book). I know the comment below me also explained the grisha powers but I just went a little more in depth on what they do (and there’s an official quiz you can take to find out which one you are I’m a heartrender)
- Corporalki, or the Order of the Living and the Dead. Within this order you have healers (they can heal people), heartrenders (They can use their power to damage a person's internal organs. Their ability ranges from slowing a person's pulse to snatching the air from their lungs. The target must be in their line of sight.), and the rare tailors (ability to change a person's appearance.) they wear the red keftas (coats)
- Etherealki, or the Order of Summoners. Within this order you have Inferni (manipulate fire), Tidemaker (manipulate water), Squallers (manipulate air). Then you have the two rare types of summoners the shadow and sun summoner. They wear the blue keftas (coats) except for the general he wears a black one
- Materialki, or the Order of Fabrikators. Within this order you have Durasts (manipulate glass, steel, wood, plants, stone, or anything solid on a molecular level.) and Alkemi (They specialize in chemicals like blasting powders and poisons.) they wear purple keftas (coats)
Also the people who attacked Alina and the other grisha are called druskelle they are a special group in the Fjerdan military (Fjerda is north of Ravka) Fjerdans believe grisha go against their religion therefore they want them dead. So druskelle are specifically trained to hunt/kil grisha or kidnap them and bring them back to Fjerda where they can stand trial and be burned at the stake.

obsessed with these videos already! it's so fun to watch y'all not knowing the first thing about this world and yet being super open and respectful about it! just wanted to add a little comment: the show mixes up two different book series by Leigh Bardugo; the first is Shadow and Bone (it consists of Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising), which is the main focus. Alina, Kirigan, Mal, the people in that timeline are from those books. And then we have Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, which is a duology; Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Nina and Matthias (which you'll meet in episode 3) and Wylan (who's not part of the first season but will appear in the second one) are the characters from that duology. They just mixed up both stories to be able to adapt the two, but yeah :) That's why the vibes and stories are so different between one timeline and the other. Hope that helps! Can't wait for chapter 3 x
I haven't read the books either and I watched the show which made me want to read the books. I also found it v interesting that the humans and magical people coexist and realize how the grisha's skills can overpower the existence of humans and the work that they do. I would want to be a sun summoner bc that’s the most powerful grisha & I like the idea of being able to summon light (don’t need a flashlight) and ability to myself warm
The detailed list of grisha colors are (first color is the main color of the kefta, second color is the embrodery):
Specials:
Darkling: black-black (can summon and control shadows, can use the cut)
Sun Summoner: blue-gold/black-gold (can summon and control sunlight, can use the cut)
Corporalki (Order of the Living and the Dead)
Heartrender: crimson-black (manipulate the body of another person to cause harm, kile stopping the heart, breaking bones)
Healer: crimson-white (manipulate the body of another person to heal injuries)
Etheralki (Order of Summoners)
Squallers: blue-silver/white (can summon and control wind/storms and sometimes lighning, which is very rare and dangerous)
Tidemakers: blue-light (can summon and control water)
Inferni: blue-red (can summon and control fire)
Materialki (Order of Fabrikators)
Durast: purple-grey (can manipulate anythin solid on a molecular level, like stone, glas, wood ...
Alkemi: purple-red (in the show its kind of pinkish) (espercialists in chemicals, potions and blasting powders)

i would suggest reading six of crows! it follows the crows and yes it may seem like ur average ya fantasy book but it actually explores some pretty dark themes and it will help u understand the crows ( the best characters ) for season 2!! the actors are also big fans of the books so as a reader that makes me very happy :)
