You're an excellent and very patient teacher and I can't wait to line all my crochet bags now!
I found straps at my local fabric store and also at a variety of thrift stores. There are online suppliers as well, and depending on where you live, this could be a great option.
I would hand wash the bag in cold water and lay it flat to dry. Depending on what type of handle you use, you'd have to keep them out of the water somehow. Maybe wrap a bag around them.

is there somewhere I can buy bag straps for my crochet bags? My crocheted straps tend to stretch a lot and I like the look of a leather bag strap.
