To anyone following this, he has his left and right cams terminology round the wrong way sometimes. The right cam is on the right of the vehicle as you drive it. If your timing belt says left and right on it, ignore this mechanic's terms, and follow the instructions in your kit. Left is left side of vehicle as tou drive it. Also: he just says "install crank bolt" and doesnt show it be tightened or give a torque.....because he doesnt have the correct crank holding tool, and instead uses the impact gun to what feels good haha.
Dude seriously, I have been watching this video everyday after work right where I left off doing the step by step.. this has been the best tutorial I have ever seen.. thank you so much for your time and generosity posting this information
Something that may help out another person.... When I went to change my timing belt, the cam pulleys were off by one tooth. Whoever changed it last left it that way. I wasn't really sure what to do at this point. Everyone says make sure your 3 marks line up, but no one tells you how to fix it if they don't. I installed the new belt I had the same problem. 1 tooth off on the Cams. After hours of trying to research and fix this issue, I stumbled across A FREAKING TIK TOK VIDEO. It explained that if you run a piece of cardboard maybe 6-10" in between the cog gear and the belt, it will offset it just enough to shift the belt ONE TOOTH. IT FREAKING WORKED. I was so happy I could cry! Try the cardboard! it works!
I was sweating having to do this. My car 2003 sequoia 160,000 miles on it with the original timing belt. I can literally watch this and do it piece by piece now. In my garage. Doesn’t sound exciting maybe, but to me it is! Thank you so much for these tutorials. They mean the world to guys working on their cars.
Just have to say, I started working on cars in 1966 I am 74 now, i have always done my own mechanics, hard because i am not a mechanic, i just learn as i go, not having money can cause a person to do their own work and learn things .as most home mechanics know, I use videos often, I watched this one because i am doing the timing and pump+ seals on my 2004 v8 Toyota 4runner,I have seen many, I have to say this guy is so just professional and so ready and spot on on everything, easy to follow, 100% coverage on everything,no speeding ahead just slow but excellent coverage, He could represent any company in videos covering how to, the best i have seen, I would try to represent companies if i had his talent, so thankful i found him, will use Him anytime i can. thanks so much and i mean this, you are over-the-top good. Tom Hampton
I have been broken down in the middle of New Mexico. Your video is saving me not only on repairs but towing too. I was able to get all the necessary parts and have them delivered to a nice neignor thats been helping me with tools and rides. Your video is by far the most descriptive and has made this repair pretty straight forward for someone that has minimal mechanic experoence. Thank you for saving me what im guessing would have been close to 2k after a long ass tow. You rock!!!!
I don't know if you will read this comment but if not i hope it gives the viewers some confidence doing this job. A friend of mine was in over his head doing this job on a 2002 model. Yesterday he texted me that he was nervous and doesn't want to mess up. He's never done a timing job before. I'm an Amputee(left leg from knee down) and my prosthetic leg is currently broken so I'm on crutches. So being the kind of friend i am i went to the shop on crutches and did this job. It took a little longer because of not having my leg but it got done. I followed this video step by step. Got the job done and the truck runs great. The only note i would add to the video is about the removal of the harmonic balancer(crank pulley). Do yourself a favor and spray it with a penetrating oil like deep creep and get a pulley puller. If that pulley hasn't been removed in a while it's quite a problem getting off and you risk moving the crank after having it and the cams lined up and ready for the new timing belt which will have you cussing like a sailor🤣🤣 So in order to make sure you don't move the crank be patient and spray it to help loosen it up and go slow with the puller. The consequence of getting impatient at that junction is putting the pulley and belt back on to get the timing lined up again. That's my only note. Other than that this video was on point from start to finish. Don't let yourself get intimidated by this job. The majority of the job is removing everything in order to get to the objective and putting all of that back on. Take pictures if you feel it's too much to keep track of and lay out paper labeled with where nuts and bolts go because there are a lot in this job. Good luck and take your time😎
This was the first time I've ever taken on replacing a timing belt and water pump on my Sequoia. This video was AWESOME and spot on. Probably saved $1500-2000 repair bill. THANK YOU for the EXCELLENT work!
Stocking up on parts rn, i have coolant and the Aisin timing & water pump kit, and I'll be doing this job on my 2001 Tundra soon. Thanks for the video, this is the most detailed one I've seen, and I've been looking for a while!
This is a very informative video. It lets me know exactly how much hard work I need to do to come up with the money to have someone like this do the timing belt.
Just did this job on my 2001 Tundra 4.7 using this EXCELLENT video. Everything was exactly as shown and the job went well. TRQ, you’ll get my parts business because of this video.
I can't thank you enough for the awesome step-by-step tutorial! I threw the timing belt while doing 60 mph in my '01 Tundra 4.7L and after scoping the cylinders, the pistons and valves looked good, so I took on the task for my first timing belt replacement. Got it all back together and it fired right up! You saved me hundreds in labor costs when I didn't know if there was further damage. Thank you again!!!!
Best video I've ever seen. I know I need help from a shop for this. Even with the video, it's too much for me. Thank you, Toyota, for not putting a chain in the 4.7. My Sequoia has 207k on it and it's time for it's 3rd timing belt. $1700 at the dealer.
Thanks great video, I did have a problem removing the hidden bolt from the fan shroud. You did mention it on the replacement part of the video behind the bracket on the power steering pump. I'm in the process of replacing equipment. An estimate of shop time would be a good thing. I'm on my fourth day, one more hopefully
I know this is titled Timing Belt Water Pump replacement, but it seems to me that you should address changing small coolant hoses along the way while you are that deep into the project. I would hate to have to take half that equipment off again to replace a $5 hose. Otherwise this is a great video. I plan on performing this procedure on my 2000 Tundra. I will replace all hoses and the serpentine belt while Im in there. Thanks for the great narration including all torque specs along the way.
Extremely informative. Well done. Great educational video. As a side bar, I assume, it was a northern vehicle. Here in the south, we are not used to seeing the under side of vehicles looking that rusted unless they have sat for years in a damp environment. Yes, there are some rust patches but nothing like this vehicle.
About a third of the way through, stopped where you pull the crankcase pulley out and gonna finish tomorrow. Echoing the sentiment of everyone else here, thank you 😉
I didn't realize you had to take the truck completely apart.....lol. If I did all of that I doubt if I would ever get it put back together. I would end up with some left over bolts and wonder where they went. lol. This was a great video though and if I do decide to try it I am definitely watching this video like 1,000 times in the process.
Only buy AISIN timing belt kit for these engines. DO NOT use anything else or you will be doing it again in a short period of time. Or maybe even replacing an engine due to poor part quality
ATTN: when dis-mounting AC compressor only remove the 3 14mm bolts and the 12mm bolt and nut on the outside bracket.. "the little guy". The other 12mm bolts can stay bolted along with the main mounting bracket. When Torqueing the 12mm bolt to 36 ft-lbs be careful Mine snapped 🥲. Either i missed the torque click on my wrench or 36 is too much sauce. TRQ, thank you for making this video I'm not trying to take away from your glory you deserve it and you're a hero!! Thank you so much you saved me alot of money!! 😁
thank you very much for uploading this video and explanation of every details, I ask auto shop owener need to replace radiator and fan pully Assy added another $500 on top of $1100 for labor he is charging for timing belt replacement wioth his own order parts total $ 2100 , I am 63 yrs old take on myself did it, All my life never took cars to mechanics, now I am old but did it, Next one Tesla, Bye-Bye those shops until my body will on table for Reserch or new medical student education. Thanks again, Bravo
i have all my parts from brake dual master to timing belt. What was your time to rAnd r timing belt i am told its 5 hours plus and your the pro i am a retired parts replacement specialist so i need to prepair this will be my first. Looks easy but labor intensive?
I recently attempted this job but realized after removing the belt my timing was off and proceeded to move the crank thinking it would move cams as well back to tdc did i just mess up the timing completely or do i justnneed to rotate it back to its original position?
Nice tutorial. Can those timing belt cogs move freely once you removed the timing belt? Also, would it be ok to put a smear of silicone gasket maker on the water pump gasket?
So how long do Timing Belt actually last? ASIN or OEM part of course? My TB is was done at 160k on my 2005 Sequioia. I'm currently at 220k miles. I'm just preparing. My 2001 Toyota Avalon TB was replaced at 80k miles by the previous owner. It currently has 180k. I just changed it due to it being at 100k miles since the last change. The belt looked great. Feel like I wasted my time. It was only 200 bucks for the ASIN kit so not a big deal, but it did take me several days. Learned something new so that was cool. But I'm definitely not looking forward to the TB on the sequoia after watching this video.
Do you have to remove the spark plugs from the engine and/or have the transmission in neutral in order to turn the crankshaft by hand? Also, once you pull off the crank pulley, what's the correct technique for putting it back on? If it takes that much force to remove how do you smash it back onto the crank?
I was able to reach that bolt in the back of the AC compressor with a 2 foot long extension and a 1 foot long extension through the wheel well behind the splashguard flap
My gates belt had the wrong timing marks on it. Had to go old school and line all the marks on TDC mark and instal from there but still a good kit and belt
thisis a heck of a job. thats why dealers must charge so much. you can do it . tips.... make sure the small o ring that goes on the water pipe is lubed with some soapy water so it doesnt roll on you.
Hey bro thats amazing video just i was wondering why you turn 50° the crankshaft my question is because the manual of my kit say no turn the crank my truck is 2000
I just did mine, I'm concerned about something tho, the bolt that holds the tensioner pully to the tensioner bracket. Does that come already torqued from the kit? I can't remember if I checked that before putting it all back together. Truck runs normal after everything, just don't know if I should tear it back apart to see if that bolt was tight from the factory or if I have to tighten it
why did he have to make the marks at 18:55? is there not a mark for the crank cog like there are for the cam cogs/sprockets? at this point I believe he has everything set to the T mark.
You forgot to show stud bolts on water pump going back on. Also you can put thermostat housing on almost last cause it’s kinda in the way for the timing belt dust covers to go back on

this just showed me that I will have this done by a professional toyota mechanic for sure. wow. you are amazing dude
Agreed. I was online buying parts and then watched this and thought that although maybe I could do it, should I do it? I decided to not do it myself.

Because of your guidance,
I’m starting today on my 2001 Tundra with 200,000 miles on the factory belt.
Thanks for your Very Clear instructions.
Can't seem to find where you torque the crank pulley bolt, did I miss that?
This was the first time I've ever taken on replacing a timing belt and water pump on my Sequoia. This video was AWESOME and spot on. Probably saved $1500-2000 repair bill. THANK YOU for the EXCELLENT work!

This is the very best instructional video on youtube.
Just ordered a kit, gonna tackle this myself. Yall pray for me 😂
I lost the screws already. Great job sir.
Brilliant how-to video. Certainly one of the best I've ever watched. One question: what is the torque value of the crank pulley bolt?
I’m fixing to attempt this challenge on my 06 tundra! Wish me luck!😂

I'm doing mine next week
This is so helpful
Fantastic instructional video. I will print the transcript for when I do the job. Thank you.

informative vid! I'm going to tackle this on my 4.7L V8 Land Cruiser soon.

i agree one of the best videos on a major project step by step instructions. Well presented !
I didn't notice that the crank pulley bolt was torqued down. Is it not necessary to torque it?
When did you torque the Damper bolt?? How many ft/lb or did you go by uga-duga's?
Great installation great camera angles and step by step video I will do my 06 Tundra
Dude got me on point 💯 trucks running

Very helpful Thank you for sharing this
Did I miss the part where to tighten the crank bolt?cause u just hand tightened??
Thank dude!!! You saved me hundreds of dollars 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Wish this video was out when i started replacing the water pump over a year ago. Hidden bolts and bad weather made it difficult.
I recently attempted this job but realized after removing the belt my timing was off and proceeded to move the crank thinking it would move cams as well back to tdc did i just mess up the timing completely or do i justnneed to rotate it back to its original position?

Is it any easier if you just want to change the water pump?

Thank you for this video.
Great , how much do you chrage for this job? Iam going to do the same but is my first time on a tundra v8, help please bro
From start to finish, how long did this take you?
Excellent video more like this please
what sealant do you use for the thermostat housing?
I've watched enough to know why it costs so much in a shop, and know that it's worth it haha. Great video though.
why did he have to make the marks at 18:55? is there not a mark for the crank cog like there are for the cam cogs/sprockets? at this point I believe he has everything set to the T mark.
Forgot to torque the harmonic balancer bolt. Or maybe you did but just didn’t show it
Do I have to do all of the same things if I just want to do the water pump?
For spark plugs or a water pump you have to take a lot of parts apart first and then you have to lose your mind to get them replaced
What kind 9f tool are you using?
How much this labor for sequioa 2002 ?
You forgot to show stud bolts on water pump going back on. Also you can put thermostat housing on almost last cause it’s kinda in the way for the timing belt dust covers to go back on
What do I do if the cam on the side of the tensioner goes back a teeth or two when installing the tensioner?
Can someone explain why he torque the timing belt tensioner, and idle pulley and toke it off?
@TRQ is this going to be very similar if not the same for an 03 Sequoia with the 4.7 2uz-fe?
+@AlexA-fp1pw The part in this video fits your application, and the install should be the same or similar. Buy this part on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
So my upper right timing mark completely jumped clockwise, is this an issue?
Tip: put antiseize on every bolt removed.
Where are you located? Can I hire you to do this?
Everything in modern models is complicated, narrow, difficult, and takes a long time to maintain, with incomparably high prices for spare parts compared to old models... How much I long for the past in everything.
You missed the very important part where you tighten up the Crank pully. This also being the hard part, because the pulley will spit. How TF do you stop it from spinning, when torquing it to 245 ft lb.?
Not sure why it shows you torquing down the idler pulley and auto tentioner before you removed the water pump. Definitely confusing.
Thanks!
Anyone have troubles bleeding the coolant system?
