  • On this episode of People's Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with a true veteran of the culture, Crooked I. They discuss his interview show "Crook's Corner," his work on the Hulu biopic "Wu-Tang: An American Saga," his first time meeting Tupac, Long Beach gang affiliations, and how hip-hop can help foster black-brown unity.
Later, Crook speaks on working with Death Row and Suge Knight, then moving to Shady/Aftermath, touring with Slaughterhouse, his struggles with alcoholism, and his journey to sobriety. The trio also discusses how mainstream rap can promote negative stereotypes and the need to take back the culture from anyone pushing those agendas.

    Interview timing:
2:05 -- Crook talks about his podcast "Crook's Corner" over on HipHopDX's TH-cam channel and his approach to interviewing guests.
5:23 -- Talib asks Crook about his work writing for Hulu's "Wu-Tang: An American Saga." Crook opens up about his East Coast influences.
9:27 -- Crook details the first time he met Tupac, on set for a St. Ides commercial during his Death Row days.
11:47 -- Crook speaks on Long Beach's unique identity on the West Coast, the city's place in music history, gang rivalries, and how the beautiful side of Long Beach doesn't get fully represented in the world of hip-hop.
14:10 -- Talib asks Crook about his take on the need for black and brown unity on the West Coast. Crook talks about how hip-hop can be and is one of the strongest unifiers.
18:55 -- Crook recounts an altercation at age 15 when his brother was shot and a Mexican friend most likely saved his life. Talib shares his own experiences in black and brown relations on the East Coast vs. the West Coast.
21:50 -- Talib asks Crook about how getting shot while being a known artist and the murder of Nipsey Hussle changed his approach to making moves in the community grew up in.
25:45 -- Crook tells about a friend of his urging him to keep coming to the Uhuru Sasa bookstore in his neighborhood, where he later lived while he was homeless and gained his love for reading and Afro-centric knowledge.
30:16 -- Talib asks Crook if he thinks reparations are possible in his lifetime, and why he thinks we need a stronger, healthier middle-class. The trio discusses the multiple ways that reparations could potentially be distributed.
38:26 -- Talib asks Crook about his career arc and affiliations, and how he navigated going from Death Row to being signed to Shady Aftermath and concentrating on his bars the entire way.
47:16 -- Crook talks about his Young Boss mixtapes, featuring beats from Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, and others. Also about his group Horseshoe Gang and upcoming releases.
50:20 -- Crook speaks on Slaughterhouse, the rap supergroup with Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, and Royce da 5'9", and how they came together, as well as the possibility of a future reunion.
59:06 -- Talib asks Crook about crazy stories from tour with the Slaughterhouse crew. Crook gets into his struggles with alcoholism during that time and mentions he is working on an upcoming documentary that outlines the relationship between sobriety and hip-hop.
1:03:11 -- Jasmin asks Crooked I if he would ever considering being a cast member of the show "Love & Hip-Hop," and Crook asks Talib if he feels the mainstream has an agenda against his music.
1:08:10 -- Jasmin mentions how the mainstream overwhelmingly pushes negative images via mainstream channels. The trio discusses police brutality and Crook's song "Good Meets Evil."
1:12:10 -- The trio chats about how important it is that those from the culture take back control of the narrative from mainstream music and media -- an effective way being through shows like "People's Party" and "Crook's Corner."
1:16:31 -- Talib asks Crook what his favorite moments, so far have been as the host of "Crook's Corner."

I met King Crooked at the Statik King album release party in 2016 for his Statik Kxng album he did with Statik Selektah. I got to meet him, statik, Termanology & Ras Kass after the show, and not only did they completely put it down that night with bars, but they were all mad humble including Crooked. That showed me that he’s not afraid to still reach out and touch the people even after that incident where he shook a fan’s hand and he almost got shot at. I got to take pictures with them after the show and I still got them up on my wall salute to king crook. He’s a real one fore sure!

I'm hooked on these. Ya'll talk about everything Hip Hop and I can't get enough. Only thing I wish you did more of was play music and break down bars.
I'm Talib Kweli's age. I'm less than a month older than him. I put out my first demo in 1987 when I was 11. I have been rapping and writing since I was 6. When I was young I knew I could never be accepted as a rapper in the climate of the time, but I loved it too much to stop. I even had a trainable voice and was a good singer. Yet I still rapped and wrote raps. Started playing guitar and piano at 8. Never went anywhere with that professionally either. However I love Hip Hop. And above all I love the Hip Hop community.
When I was 8 it accepted me without judgment regardless of my blue eyes and white skin. The Rock Steady Crew came with a DJ to my elementary school sponsored by Bam and Zulu Nation. They put on a Hip Hop seminar.
Crazylegs taught me how to pop and lock, groundwork, backspin, windmill and even got me into a headspin before my time was up. The DJ let me scratch records and they let me rap. That one experience changed my artistic output 100%. And I wish more people got what I did.
It wasn't until I saw Prime Minister Pete Nice that I thought much different about the industry as a career and not much at that. 3rd Bass was a novelty act in the public eye, although underground they were well regarded. RA Da Rugged Man came out a few years later and never went mainstream like, say, Eminem, but again was a local underground sensation (I'm originally from LI,NY). I can thank MC Serch for finding Nas i'd suppose but someone like Nas was going to be discovered irregardless. None of these things could change my mind about a career, but I still kept writing.
So, now at 44, while I slowly am eaten alive by adenocarcinoma, I decided I would start making music again. So far I have 4 records i'm proud of and 1 that needed more work than I know how to do in Pro Tools. And listening to Crooked I say my favorite words: I do this for the art, not the money, if the money comes, it comes, reinforced that.
If 10 people in the entire world listen to what I put out that's great. if 10 million do, even better. In the end the only person I am trying to be better than is myself yesterday. And I love listening to my own work.
Thank you for this Talib Kweli. I've been a fan since I could come to the park and get laughed at. When I looked up "Hot new hip hop 1998" on Yahoo @ 56k bps Definition was what came up. I listened to it and realized it had an 8 bit video game sound and a tough beat. It was dope. Then I heard the bars. I then realized the dudes from the park cyphers made it.

Crooked remained attentive to his surroundings and applied cautious steps, I respect that as I like to do the same. He went further, he's wise. Another amazing interview 🙌.
    I'm down for Bun B, he's a legitimate Professor/Lecturer at a University in Houston. He's a dope MC/writer/lyricist too.
Love the collabo on Chino XL's track Xross My Heart.
    Dope!!
Yes, Joe Budden is a lyrical beast to say least. I could care less about a mainstream hit, those Murda Muzik Mix Tapes are all hits!!! Escape Route, pfff. Wow. Even the albums he dropped after are insane, his entire catalog is something to be proud about, amazing body of work. The opening verse on By Law, I get it . Remember, he's Anti!!
    I'm out,
Hip hop fan, down for the culture
