  • This covers an outdoor coil with a large leak. I isolate, repair and pressure check the coil.
    This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
    If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

    Customers are funny people, as you know. I had to make a repair like this on an R22 unit or replace the system or the coil. Told the customer the unit was old and didn't make sense to buy a coil for a 20 year old unit when she was probably going to have to replace the system in a year or two. I made her aware that I'd have to remove the fins around the repair, ok no problem. This was a condenser that you can see coil really well. When it was done and running well she complained that it looked like something from "Sanford & Son". She considered replacing the coil but I talked her into changing out the system and knocked the cost of the repair off, minus the cost of the R22. Like I said, customers are funny people.

    Nobody attempts to fix coil leaks anymore since the Refrigerant has gotten so expensive. We just replace the whole coil. The customer wouldn’t believe you ever fixed it anyway when a new leak springs up elsewhere in the already weak coil.

    stay brite 8 works better for this application in my opinion. Heating that extremely thin copper weakens it too much. Braze connections are much cleaner, without the worry of getting flux into the system, but stay brite 8 is way easier to fix leaks. Not opening the battle of braze vs stay brite here, but in fixing leaks there is no question what's used the most often and best, stay brite, IMO.

    Uncommon place for a leak. Maybe it had an over pressure situation, if it was a condenser. They usually leak at the steel partitions or headers.

    I understand there is a class action suit against Goodman for defective coils on indoor air handler units. They won't admit blame and many of the HVAC contractors who installed the air handler units are refusing to replace defective units I guess because Goodman won't cover the costs for some of them and they don't want to lose money. I have been paying for labor associated with this while my unit is under warranty. Now I will have to have entire unit replaced, or coils replaced because my unit keeps breaking down due to the bad coils leaking refrigerant. I am so over it!

    • @grayfurnaceman
      @grayfurnaceman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rosemary Thomas The class action is true. Whether the coil could be repaired or must be replaced, I don't know. Goodman has had the parts only warranty for many years. Not one I agree with. Thanks for the thoughts.

    I really hate having to cut the fins out, because it alters the coil in a way that takes away the coil's ability to transfer heat, and god help you if you have a fixed orifice, because the altered condenser will naturally raise the head pressure slightly, causing you to have to undercharge to get the right superheat. I know that replacing the coil is not always an option, and I myself like to keep old and classic AC units fixed up and running right since they're so reliable, but I hate having to remove sections of fins to fix coils, unless it's a small section on a very large coil. I think you did one of the best coil fixes i've seen in a while, but having to fix a coil, rather than replacing it with one that would work just goes against my grain.

    • @grayfurnaceman
      @grayfurnaceman  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I sort of look at it the opposite way. The reduction in heat transfer is so low as to be negligible. Somewhat like a very slight amount of dirt in the coil. In the unit this was done on the entire unit was replaced and was only 5 years old. In any case, coil replacement is a very expensive job. I hear you on doing clean work. It is just a different way of looking at it. Thanks for the thoughts.

      I believe it’s actually illegal to cut into a condenser coil fin area. You cannot legally modify or alter equipment certified by ASHRAE. Also if you are a dealer/ vendor it’s a violation of your agreement with the provider. You should also read up on the non disclosure agreement you have with the vendor and manufacture. Unless you’re a Goodman dealer then You can do whatever you want.

    • @grayfurnaceman

      Arnie Schwartzenegger I will not use any low temp solder on refrigeration, especially when closing a hole in the pipe. The product is just not effective for this type of repair. Products like staybrite 8 are good solders for tight fitting joints and would probably seal. But when I leave the joint, I don't ever want to come back, so sil phos 15% is what I use. The sil phos product has has been the standard for many years because it is so good at what it does. Just my opinion but backed by 35 years of use in the field.

I have found a lot of leaks where the weak spots like 90 degree bends and in the creases where the line has been put together and also the copper run through the coils are a lot thinner than regular line. I have solder pipe that was so thin it would almost burn a bigger hole before getting hot enough for the solder to melt! Great repair! Take care

      There are a number of variables here like size of equipment, whether its R-22 or R-410A, etc. But I would expect a minimum of $500 up.

    How long do the copper solder last?

      The brazing compound used here will last the life of the unit.

      grayfurnaceman Do you ever use Stay Brite to make some repairs? I used to use it on everything but now I only use it for reversing valves and other temperature sensitive things. I like how I don't need to do a nitrogen purge, it doesn't burn up the insulation inside air handlers or on line sets, and I can carry my little propane torch into attics with me instead of my MC bottle.

      grayfurnaceman I've never had an issue with the solder blowing out or leaking any more than brazing.

    How do you pull the fins off?

    Great video, thank you! I'm trying to fix a ~ 1/32" to 1/16" diameter puncture in a copper evaporator coil. I don't have Oxy/Ac torch, and I'm looking at alternative to buying a $200-300 kit for this. They don't rent them any more. Looks like MAPP gas (no oxy) from Home Supply store won't get hot enough. Maybe could rig Oxy/MAPP setup? I wouldn't mind having a setup for other projects, but 2-300 is a but much for tinkering.
    I have seen other types of patch products (e.g. epoxy based). Any thoughts, Gary? Thanks in advance.

      I found a place that rents oxy/acet set for $25. These channels are tin coated, and seem thinner than those in this video, I'm concerned about blowing through it. Any thoughts? Should I try to form/add copper patch or coupling?
      Also, I'm reading now that for 410 systems the filter drier may need to be replaced if system exposed to air. it didn't run in this state (pin hole from screw occurred while unit was off - doh!). Also reading that oil might need to be replaced? Ugh. Thanks for your insight. Unfortunately don't have the budget for $800 repair, but have a licensed friend that can do the charging.

      Yes, they are very thin. Torch control is everything here. Installing a coupling will just make more mess. The drier will definitely need to be replaced. Replace with an oversized drier. The oil is highly hygroscopic. Means it absorbs moisture. You cannot remove moisture with evacuation. Driers are the best way to remove moisture.
