With forwards being so athletic and skilful yet strong these days, do you think the pod system will phase out?

Thanks for the reply. Honestly this is a video in itself. Graham Henry would always talk about scoring off the first phase, and if you didn’t, then scoring on the second. The first principle of play is to go forward. We don’t generally get into our shape until the third phase so you could argue that shape is already irrelevant, it’s just a new starting point if the original strike moves didn’t work. Most tries occur within the first 3 phases, a big percentage of those are from turn over and kick returns and the other big chunk is from set piece (mainly lineouts). That’s why some teams kick so often is to create that broken play, get possession and score which statistically will be inside of the first two phases. There are so many good theories, I’d recommend having a deep dive into your coaching philosophy and how you want to play the game.

@therugbyinstitute if you'd analyse the "we don't often get into our, shape until the third phase" bit, that would be so insightful!

Generally you’ll have a 1 or 2 phase strike move off set piece. If we don’t score a try or break the line, then we look to move into our shape or kick. Does that help?
