I have lived in California my whole 68 years. I am sure there are others who lived here longer. What I can say is I remember the yearly weather from the 60s and 70s and even the 80s. We had alot more water here during those times. What I mean is there was alot more rainfall and storms over the winter/spring period. It would be a huge boon for us all to see that kind of weather once again in California.
Yes, those were the fat winters, this one reminds me of '82-'83 El Nino, but I think this pattern is an anomaly and the trend toward dryness will continue. Tell you what; if it continues rainy and wet for the next 10 years, I owe you a coke, or a pepsi, -your choice.
@Lisa_sunshinevibes_70 Most of the water falls in the mountains and must be stored and delivered to the coastal citities and to agriculture at a constant rate. Water is a commodity just like other goods, and all of that infrasructure cost a lot of money to build and to maintain. And you have all these competing interests vying for control of a dwindling resourse as well as increasing demand, so, ...control is everything. It alwasy has been. Sharing (giving it away) never was a way to make money, my dear.
@Lisa_sunshinevibes_70 You need a really big cistern to collect six months of water, because that is how long most of CA goes without water. There is a reason why home cisterns are not allowed to be tied in water systems that are tied into municipal water ststems and that is because "cross-connections" can admit pathogens into the public water supply in the event of negative pressure. They cannot force people to use or maintain backflow prevention devices nor can they prevent loss of pressure dure to accident.
Not everything that is done by people is about controlling you. Its about avoiding lawsuits and things llike that, can you dig it?

Water usage has increased exponentially with urban growth and you had the same number of reservoirs during this time, I’m old and I remember that weather is always cyclical. The sun is on an eleven year cycle, the earth is on a cycle as far as it’s distance from the sun so good luck controlling that.😊

The drought has been scary so I'm glad that the reservoirs are getting to better levels, but I'm very sorry to see so many people's homes, businesses, and cars affected by the floods. The loss of life has been especially tragic.
People should be careful where they build. The indians were.

It has been. It's also scary when they keep building new homes or buildings. It's like those will take more water up too! Lastly, honestly I don't want them to waste the water that is spilling out of the reserves. They should try to save the water that goes over board. You never know, they could go back & say drought again. They should have a plan of keeping that extra water.

Very happy to see Californias lakes and reservoirs starting to filling up. Hopefully this season will end with all water levels at their normal levels and the long drought is over.

CA can only hold 50% of any average rainy season -all the rest of the rain water floods out to the ocean.. by contrast, Colorado reservoirs can contain 400% of its annual rain fall -that's why they can make $ selling water to southern California.. environmentalist would rather the population and farms die in California than provide sensible water management -wake up!

FINALLY!!! it's nice to see our east bay hills get green again even in this winter.. it's usually pretty dead these past few years! I hope we don't fall back into this same pattern come summer.

It's always dry in summer and always has been in Cali. Just hope for wet winters to come back.
I've lived here my whole life and this has always been the way the weather has been, extremely dry years like in the 70's followed by extremely wet years like the 80's all the way up until now. The only difference between then and now is the population has gone from 20 million to 40 million and we've only built a few small reservoirs for all those people's needs.

I remember we had a lot of rain in 2017 2018 Winter however we had the same highs of 111 last year in September for the first two weeks and no rain. I definitely know that it’s cyclical but regardless people need to learn how to conserve water and stop selling all of our water to everyone else. Agriculture Has to also get smarter with their drip systems I live in an agricultural area and they just toss it over everything in the air

The reporter makes it sound like we’re out of drought. 120% of normal does NOT mean it’s full; it just means we’re ahead of schedule. But in Nov 2021 we were ahead of schedule with the heavy October rains and no rain came from Nov-Jun, leaving us behind schedule.
I guarantee you: if you can mess water conservation up, these people California will mess it up. We need new people managing our water supplies.

@@photonjones5908 we got some rain in December 2021 but the water managers increased outflows from reservoirs with October rains thinking subsequent rains would overburden dams. Even at that time, you had think that was insane. Why should outflows exceed inflows during drought?!?!
Those rains never came. The increased outflows of freshwater just pissed into the ocean in October, leaving reservoirs low going into summer.
You have uneducated people managing water. Let’s get some fresh blood of data scientists, scenario planners, machine learning experts to replace these boomers managing our greatest resource!

When my lawn gets 1 inch of rain a week, it is beautiful green.
But if there is a drought for 4 weeks, and then it gets 4 inches of rain in an hour, then most of the rain just runs off on the surface, and doesn’t soak into the ground. The grass gets a bit greener, but then its back to dying again.
The rain is welcome, but it is nowhere near a replacement for what was missed before, even if it seems to be a lot.

Everybody forgets that it was just four years ago that we completely filled up all the reservoirs and we ended the drought. It was not a relentless drought. It was three or four years of drought after we had ended the drought

I feel bad for those affected by flooding (my old neighborhood in Merced was evacuated today from Bear Creek overflowing), but it is so nice to see this rain. Its really heartening to see Oroville 85% of normal plus all the snowback in the mountains above it. Its the state water project's biggest.
It's that double-edged sword. Rain is simply great, but without an actual natural renewing snowpack in the mountains, the "true California water source", it's just a temporary reprieve in the big scheme of things. A pleasant delay.
Oroville is only 38% full. It's poor reporting when talking about reservoir capacity.

I just turned 50 years old. Bought the big house here in southern California for 50K dollars back in 1990s. We did get more rainfall back then.
Despite all this rain, it's going to take years to replenish the aquifers that have been pumped dry by farms in the Central Valley.

It's literally staring you in the face 50s into the video... The main reservoirs are 42% full and the normal (read non-drought) level is 68% full. Get back to that normal level and you can stop talking about drought.

The problem is the soil has no water in it. Groundwater takes time to replenish and a concrete spillway stops water from returning to the ground. Changes need to be made to prevent future shortages.
How many aquifers have been lost to drought or over use by ag, with absolutely nothing done to increase groundwater capture when the rainy years return? There's way too much money and politics in California water. There's BIG money in growing almonds, hay, feed corn, and dairy cows.

Salt Lake City / Utah has also been hammered this season. Every storm CA gets ends up in Utah eventually. As I type it is dumping uncharacteristically wet / soupy snow outside my house.

@@davvves7977 the answer is yes. It can cause spring floods. It can also take well into the summer to completely thaw in some of our mountains, which would be more ideal.

Problem is they will let the water out (I don't know the reason but they do) into the ocean and the summer, we will be in drought and no water in the reservoirs.
But that's not a problem. Water naturally flows to the ocean.
U don't know why they let the water out lol. For one the reservoirs are made by building dams on rivers. If you don't let it out it overtops the dam and washes it away. Hard to store water after the dam is gone.

In '98 we had big storms and it felt a reservoirs but nothing like what I've seen I live near New Milos are as a voor to all in the county and it's just unbelievable it's gone up about 50 feet in elevation that's an insane amount of water in just a couple of weeks

We really shouldn't be in a position where reservoirs are spilling water one year then going into drought the next. This year has been good but most of the past decade hasn't; more capacity should be built to save every drop possible and ameliorate multi-year drought effects.
Lol u are clueless. "Spilling" is totally the wrong word unless u are talking about a cup. No reservoir on earth is designed to prevent flow downstream. It would be an immediate failure within one year as water would just go over the dam. If u know anything about water then u know the dam would then wash out followed by any towns downstream of said dam. Your comment lacks common sense and critical thinking entirely.
KTVU had a similar report in the Dec 2021 time frame after a good bout of storms filled the reservoirs. A mere 6 months later the state declared a "massive drought" for the area. Question: why doesn't the state enlarge the reservoirs (or create new ones) in the dry seasons to catch more of this water rather than let it spill over and drain off?
Indeed, there was a lot of rain a year ago and it was looking good but then, as you said, it just straight up stopped. No number of reservoirs is going to make a difference if it doesn't rain. Plus the cost, financially, ecologically, etc. would outweigh the benefits.
@@grakkerful I drove from SF to Carson City in June of 2022 and the mountain reservoirs were full and there was still snow on the mountains. Someone's lying, just sayin'.
It's made worse because all the groundwater has been stripped from the land it will take hundreds of years and alot more rain to fix the damage that has done.
Because the law of diminishing returns exists. The proposed site of reservoirs aren’t very good and do not have a great way to be filled by rainfall. Reservoirs were built in the best places to start with, California has 1300 reservoirs so what you are looking at now is the 1301 best place. Keep in mind urban water use has remained constant, what has grown is agricultural water use. Maybe farmers could implement better water conservation policies, unlikely as they are as stupid as they are ornery, but that is the majority of the water.
What we need to do for urban centers is water reclamation, reusing water by filtering already used water is easier than desalination and doesn’t have to be pumped from ocean side 100s of miles away and 100s of feet in elevation.
CA doesn't have enough water storage. I wish every new home has an underground tank, just like houses in Bermuda. That will translates to millions and millions of gallons that we could store and can be used during dry season without exhausting our water supply.

I know people have short memories, but I hope all of this reminds people how precious water is and that conservation of water is so important even in 'normal' times, because it can go bad really quickly and there is very little we can do to recover. We are at the mercy of nature.

We’re finally given all of this water yet a large majority is being let go into the ocean to become useless, with the rest to be severely depleted within a few months from poor management. I can confidently say it won’t be long till we’re right back to where we started with cries of “we’re in a drought, we could really use some rain right now!” as if we hadn’t utterly wasted the precious resource when it had been so plentiful.
