Loved the video. I've never seen before start up, from untying, watching the ice crack, seeing the thrusters come on, to the late salute. It was great! Thank you, Paul!!
@@PaulScinocca true but sometimes you are so busy looking behind you forget to check where the front is going the next thing you know there's dented panels, smashed headlamp and snot and tears everywhere.
That was pretty good! I've never seen one of these ships back up.The Captain has skills, working the bow thruster and backing all the way out on the lake. Anyone who has ever driven a shaft boat knows they back up poorly. None of the the prop propulsion goes over the rudder so only the water moving past it gives you what very little steering you do have.
Another fine effort. Your footage of the ship pushing away from the dock is rare. Don't recall seeing that in a spotting video from the Lakes. Way to scoop the competition.
Just found this one Paul. That was just amazing. Not only undocking, but ice as well, and then a complete reverse out of port!! Can't imagine how long you might have to wait to see that again! With beautiful clear air the filming is terrific. Definitely on for the history shelf!! Thank you. 😀😀😀😀😀😀
The captain of the gigantic ship deserves to be congratulated. As if driving out a four wheeler from mud, the captain made movements of the bulk carrier, came out of troubled waters and continued his journey.
Paul, Great camera work! We watched The Algoma live on Duluth cam. Amazing . Recently found your page and are big fans of your filming and notes. Thanks for work you put in!
Does anyone know if there is a reason why the ship turns around out on the open lake instead of in the harbor? Is it more fuel efficient? Or just a matter of the ice cover in the harbor? I agree on the camera work comments, very cool to see the side thrusters at work!
Just guessing since the harbor had some ice flowing around the Captain decided it was more efficient/safe to just back out the entire way. Thanks Michele C
In short: departing backwards with a ship corresponds with departing forwards with a car. You'll want the side with the steering and (in case of ships and some vehicles) the propulsion to get clear of confinement first. A bow thruster may be very helpful to get more room on that end quicker. I couldn't see if the ship still had one rope from the bow moored while the stern was swinging away. That would be a normal thing, too. Reversing under the bridge would make sense: you could then sail astern in the "wrong" direction, then in one take change to full ahead in the right direction - as opposed to turning back-and-forth in the confinements of the port. Sidebar: I live in Amsterdam, Europe. The biggest of the cruise ships calling here will turn in the wider part of the IJ basin, a bit away from the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (which is just East of the main railway station, Amsterdam Centraal). If you should enjoy watching manoeuvers, query TH-cam for the reports (likely in German, like from regional television station NDR) of the newly-built cruise ships towed backwards down the river Ems from the Meyer wharf in Papenburg (Germany) to Eemshaven (a North Sea port in the Netherlands, where the last things are to be done). The water level of the river will have been raised for weeks ahead. A railroad bridge would be removed the day before and put back the day after. (However, a smaller ship ruined the bridge. Works to build a "better" bridge have recently begun.)
On the lakes, that's not "backwards", it's called "Stern First" & that was right from a tug captain for GLT that personally called me at home to correct me on that after I published something in a local newsletter.
Vic was a nice guy. He was a tug Captain here in Buffalo & his family lives about 5 mins from me. Cool old dude & he knew everything there was to know about towing because he learned from the old timers that ran the steam tugs back in the day.
Well. That backwards piloting can't be quite so easy, so it's not surprising that the salute was forgotten in the intensity. Do they steer entirely with bow thruster when going backwards?
Considering the amount of salt dust that was blowing around for the 2 or 3 days it was unloading, I wonder if it could now be called a salt water harbor? lol
My father worked the great lakes till 1970. He was usually home before Christmas. Sometimes with only a few days to spare. Obviously Christmas preparations were all on my mother with 5 children.
Don't know how you do it!.A great video of the ship departing the dock ,nice camera work showing the use of the bow thruster's (do you have special permission to be in that area, just asking) nice long distance shots as well ..great job paul..
The Go-Pro cameras lose about 60% of their battery life in the cold, the colder it is the less they last. The HikVision is a clunky set up I use at night, it is powered by a large 5Ah battery, which will power that camera for about 8 hours....Its really a security camera I use for the Monarch season, re-purposed for ships... 😁

You just explained a lot on how these ships leave port and the backwards salute is appropriate. Thank you.
This is exceptional for so many reasons. I like seeing the bridge as much as the boats, and that perspective was amazing. Really nice work!

Great to see how these big boys maneuver and operate in port no matter what the conditions are. Good job👍.

Amazing how much power that bow thruster generates!
I agree! its amazing the timing they must need to know, too much thruster and they spin out of control....
I'd say that's a pretty slick maneuver. Even using a bow thruster and no Tug Assist
I will agree!

I was actually watching the live cam the day this took place and could not figure out the reason why

Looks like more trouble from the wind than ice! 😉
it was a bit "breezy" out.
With that wide pilothouse and big windows at the back, why not?
Wonder why they're using the bow thruster to push toward the dock @ 1:00?
I'm thinking the wind was using them as a kite.
Over all boats of any type have better steering control in reverse. You go slower but control is great.
Did not know that.
But it would be a great way to test if the relatively new ship could run astern for a long period of time.
True
Guestion.why is he backing up?
My guess is he did not want to turn around in the harbor with the ice.
the ice makes my 54 degrees feel warm
