  • Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but Herkimer Diamonds are the rockhound's best friend. We travel near Herkimer County, New York to visit Crystal Grove Mines in search of those double-terminated quartz treasures known as Herkimer Diamonds.
    This gorgeous type of stubby, double-terminated quartz crystals (Herkimer Diamonds) are found in a few places around the world, typically in small pockets (vugs) in thick beds of Dolostone. Dolostone mining for Herkimer Diamonds can be a tough and tiring business, sometimes requiring days of work to get at the irregular pockets. Herkimer Diamonds can be as small as a large grain of sand, and individual Herkimer Diamonds have been found as large as a football.

    Great video! This is our favorite campground and mine! The husband & wife team that run Crystal Grove are the nicest and most helpful people! My 11yo son found a tennis ball sized herkimer diamond this past weekend!

      Unfortunately I did not have enough time to break out the really heavy gear and crack for those wonderful druzy pockets like I needed to. I would love to see that tennis ball sized herkimer your son found! You could post it over on our Rockhounding USA Facebook page.

      I have heard fantastic things about Ace of Diamonds. I am definitely planning on a second trip to the area to get my little rockhound fingers on some larger Herkimers. Are you into hardrock mining for them in the Dolostone, or do you typically hunt in the more eroded sediments where they have weathered out?

      Rockhounding USA i really want to get into the serious hard rock mining there but its real real tough, im usually digging around the weathered out areas and have had very very good luck

    Nice job! I go there a lot, Crystal grove is my favorite place to go! I have been going there for about 25 years now and have come home with plenty of great stuff!

      I wish I had had more time. I plan to return with my son Chase and get down to some good, old fashioned dolostone hardrock mining.

      I would appreciate it if you would subscribe to my channel. We are planning quite a few more field trips in the next few months. Thanks for your comment!

      Done! I look forward to seeing some great field trips. If you come to CT I could arrange to possibly figure out a place to take you digging. We would have to do some coordinating together so I would have time to arrange something.

    My buddy owns Crystal Grove....what program do you use to edit your videos?

    • @rockhoundingusa8207
      @rockhoundingusa8207  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adobe Premiere Pro CC. Adobe only does subscription-based use, no more purchasing software. It is about $30 to $50 per month, depending on the plan.

    I love your videos. Bit you need tl.make your narration audio normal like your regular audio. It's too echo like

      The in-car audio was from a cheaper dash cam. That has been rectified. Better audio on the way in future videos. Thanks for the encouragement, and please subscribe.

    Your music is too loud, it overpowers your narration.

      Unfortunately I didn't have the best location to record audio for that particular video. Produced that one on the road.
