What a cool concept for a bossfight, I for one didn't see it coming at all-- in execution... Eh alright, but still the idea (and "cool factor") makes up for it!
In terms of the plot, this bossfight made little sense and ultimately wasn't necessary for the story. However, the fight and scenario was absolutely amazing, and is one of the best examples of the Rule of Cool.
It actually made a lot of sense if you followed the story closely. Royce wanted the Transistor, and they just so happened had to end up fighting for it. I think it was paramount for Royce's character too. There was something sinister under his veneer of "I'm just an awkward scientist". Just my two cents though.
