I played 002 in Stranger Things 4 in 2021, years before the acting strike happened.
But one of the big concerns for the actors strike was the lack of residuals for streaming shows. So then why have I been getting paid passive income (Residuals) for my role on that Netflix show?
How much money am I making per month?
That's what I explain in this video, enjoy!

THIS IS WHY BEING CREDITED IS SO IMPORTANT
Lol no, we will pirate and make sure you make nothing.
I still can't believe that Tristan is such a kind person but in Stranger Things he's such a bully and that shows how great of and actor he is!!😊
Haha thanks, I try my best.
Great job in season 4, really enjoyed it 😊@@TristanSpohnAKASpiderman
He’s literally boasting about how much money he makes for doing nothing and mocking the peasants who paid him
Skills
@@jhpfdijtuiweruot what did you watch?? none of that was a flex. that is all money completely reasonable to make doing anything, not even an amount to boast about. this is an insight to how this all works and how someone made money acting, and its some people find this interesting. if he was just showing off his wealth that would be different. he breaks down exactly how everything worked. weird take
bros editing is top tier
Agreed!! My editors Emre, Jamie, and Barbara all kill it!
@@TristanSpohnAKASpiderman could hire me to edit for you,bet
it's over edited, hard to watch.
@@TristanSpohnAKASpiderman Props for give them credits 👌👌
@@astronaut5009 you sound like a hater
For an actor to be open and clear with the amounts he makes is something we need more in this world. We need to learn that the public having that knowledge of how much big actors and small ones and extras make isn't something that's career ending, but rather can be a start of a career for someone else.
This was really great, nobody is creating content about film industry like this
I’m happy this helped!
@@TristanSpohnAKASpiderman I mean, it's nice you show aII angIes of what is happening
Very well spoken. Also impressive the vast difference in character played in Stranger Things vs who he actually is off-screen. Some actors just seem to play themselves on-screen, which works for them.
Yeah I'm questioning how netflix does these calculations. You should be making more for appearing in 5 episodes. Thanks for the transparency.
I know it's unnecessarily confusing, BUT, I already think I made a crazy amount for the episodes and am grateful for what I did make.
@@TristanSpohnAKASpiderman It's amazing you're so humble, but for a show as big as stranger things, it should really be more than this. Netflix margins are almost 30%, meaning they could pay their actors 5x as much, and this would barely impact profits (it would be just a few percent less profit).
@@ryanm2648yea you obviously don't understand economics; a few percent is billions of dollars. A quick Google also shows Netflix has a 17% profit margin, not 30...
This system is obviously not perfect, but it is a good way, especially for small actors to make extra money for rent. Plus if you watched the video, you see this has already changed with the new deal after the strike, where performance does make a difference now.
idk he wasn't even a professional actor and he was a side character so I think he got a good amount
@@Kaydenktm This pay discrepancy exists at the highest levels of acting as well in my opinion. In the show The Last of Us Pedro Pascal received 600,000 per episode and Bella Ramsey made 70,000. These metrics are wildly calculated dude. Main characters should be paid the same regardless of background, both of their roles are equally important to the story. The argument can be made that Pedro Pascal's reputation is more valuable but in that case, he has more opportunities for additional income streams. Tristan's character in stranger things is Eleven's first bully, retro actively setting the tone for all of the villains' to come. 002 is also 1 of the 4 main characters to have super powers in the entirety of the show. Making this character look good is a lot of responsibility, making Tristan a valuable asset deserving of more money... I say main because he was in that flash back story arch, 008 was also a main in her story arch in season 2.
This is also why Disney legally changes the names of tv shows that hits 3 seasons, so it's "technically" a new show and then they can keep rates low. The Suite Life of Zack & Cody is an example of them slightly renaming the show in order to screw over the child actors.
technically the suite life WAS two separate shows, unlike hannah montana forever and liv and maddie cali style which were renamed fourth seasons
Yeah, I remember them renaming the show to 'The Suite Life on Deck'.
Wow I didn't know that. Very on brand though. Still baffles me people support that corporation.
I love the way you talk. So clear, informative and just overall easy to listen to.
Wow, I didn’t even realize actors are now getting residuals for streamed shows-that’s such amazing progress! It’s crazy how much streaming networks have changed things for actors when it comes to pay. For instance, commercials also used to pay significantly more back then. The shift to streaming has created such a gap in compensation, so it’s great to see better contracts and laws finally addressing that and ensuring actors are fairly compensated-especially since they play such a huge role in making these shows massively popular for the networks.
On another note, I love how you’re always so grateful to have been part of the show, no matter the pay. Honestly, I’d have been over the moon just to be cast in one of my dream shows like that-I probably wouldn’t have even thought about the money at the time! 😄 Great Video Tristan.
Yes!!! It’s encouraging to see progress is made!! And of course! I’m extremely happy I made as much as I did and it honestly opened a ton of doors both career wise and financially speaking. But I would’ve been just as happy if I had done it for free, which I do think can be taken advantage of my networks, which is why these safeguards are important.
But going from never making more than $1800/month and living with my parents after financial devastation the two years I tried to make it work in LA, to $5000/week AND residuals after the fact? Crazy. I’m never going to act like that wasn’t a ton of money. And I never would’ve been able to confidently switch from minimum wage manual labor or customer service to purely creative work without that.
till they can get away with AI like Sora, voice actors are already very s... and all the people around production, logistic etc.pp. and a lot jobs will lose worth (and so less payment) - sadly, I hope I'm wrong...
@@nopenope1 I think quite the opposite honestly. It can lead to new and more opportunities. Small film makers can make use of it and make movies similar to big budget stuffs. I could see a huge explosion happening in indie film making and a lot of people and even individuals making movies in scope that was not possible before.
@@TristanSpohnAKASpiderman your dedication to write this all
Wow👏👏👏👏👏
11:50 awe, I'm so sorry Tristan. I hope you get another big role and get your 100k next time, you would be over the moon, you worked so hard =(
Oh no, don't be sorry, I'm incredibly grateful for what I have. I've made more as an actor than I ever thought possible already. I think more than anything that shows how much the truly big actors are missing out on.
@@TristanSpohnAKASpidermaneh, true…But let’s be honest, main actors have other ways of generating revenue. It would be cool to see a breakdown of that from your perspective. Thanks for the vid 👏
The editing ,storytelling, vissuals , sound, the energy , everything is on top notch 👏👏👏
Thanks for delivering this video for free. you deserve more keep it up
I didn't even watch stranger things and it's my first time seeing you but you seem like such a likeable guy. I like your tone of voice, it's calming and at the same time very immersive
wait till season 5 is out then start watching it
@AngelliaX maybe I should yeah like until know I've been very busy with my studies but now I'll go to uni so I have more time
I think the same. His tone and intonations are so gentle to the ears 😛 like ASMR Itself
Can anyone not subscribe after how he asked at the end? 😂
btw I subscribed at the beginning.
Finally a chance to talk about 002 and how powerful he really was.
He probably only lost to 011 through the fatigue of beating every single other subject there back to back, and possibly also by underestimating how strong 011 is.
Vecna also struggled so hard in his fight with 002 that his nose was bleeding, and at that time 002 was not in a good health condition after Brenner electrocuted him to near death.
Vecna also probably surprised attacked as he wouldn't have suspected a staff member to just attack.
Guy was possibly the strongest character in the show
Hehehe selfishly I love this take.
This was very interesting and I'm very happy that the actor's strikes went somewhere!!!! We all deserve to live without the anxiety of not being able to afford our next house payment or next meal! Loved you in Stranger Things season 4!!! 😮🖤
This was an incredible forensic analysis and breakdown of how this whole thing works because I like millions of others were very confused about the whole strike and what it meant for the poor actors in the residuals. So thank you for this as well as delivering it with a very pleasant, calm voice and demeanor. You should keep doing this. You're very very good at it.
The fact that he made me HATE his character in the show, but in real life he is such a sweet and kind soul, just comes to show how good of an actor he is. 🥰 I LOVE YOU💕 ❤️, You were AMAZINGGGG 😊 ☺️
That was your first professional gig?? Amazing job! You gave a spectacular performance, cant wait to see what your future holds!
I love how the title is exactly what the video is; and how you just went straight to the point😂
Very cool video! I subscribed. Cheers from 🍻 Milwaukee Wisconsin
I also gave about 50 thumbs up on the comments. Work that logarithm!
Really wanted to snap a few parts off 'number 2' so good on ya mate! Yep I'm an actor / stunt performer, lower tier performer. I am self employed as a remote contract computer engineer, martial arts instructor, when the acting isn't active. But lost count how many TV series and movies I have been in now. LOVE those trickle in residuals. They helped buy my new condo.
I just found you but your way of storytelling is so nice. You're also one of the few youtubers that doesn't yell at the video and it's so nice omygod
I’ve heard of Royalties before but not residuals, I didn’t even know writers got paid residuals, one of my biggest fears about entering the entertainment industry as a writer is that the work load would be massive for not much reward, this has really helped open my eyes to dive deep and do more research and reconsider my choices. Thank you Tristan!
Just subscribed! Every time I have a question about acting and how it works I come back to this channel. I’m international and will likely never get the opportunity to try to become a working actor in the US or Canada, but it’s nice to learn about it at least!
Really cool explanation guy! A big thank you for posting this video.
Thank you for actually showing us the numbers and how the residuals for streaming actually work.
Hope to see you on the TV or Big Screen!
Dang I thought I understood the strike but you made it make way more sense - awesome, thanks! Appreciate the level of transparency you gave
Dayum PAPA must be proud!
I was "cut" from a Maroon 5 music video that never ended up releasing because the label nope'd it once they caught wind of what was going on. Day Two on set was cancelled entirely. Samuel Bayer (Smells Like Teen Spirit) directed it. The song even ended up changed. Originally 'This Song Is Going To Hurt Like A Motherf*c*e*', but was later retitled and released as 'This Summers Gonna " " " " '. My banner pic is actually a shot from Ryan's (male lead) trailer on set that day. Karl (Shellback) put that song together in a single session with Adam and they were so hyped on it. Tried to put it out as a surprise release before the label could find them out and put a stop to it. Mission unsuccessful.
Anyway, I say all this because I got the strangest SAG checks from that day. Didn't get paid for the entire first day of shooting, but then like a year later started receiving $26 checks out of the blue regarding it. Ryan didn't get paid for his day of work at all, but I'm pretty sure Helena, the female lead, did. I still don't know what happened with all that and it still bums me out.
Haven't watched Stranger Things, but just wanted to say that you seem like such a nice, down to earth, person. Hope you get that massive payday on a project soon. And I'm Glad the deal has been made a little fairer for crew and cast in the future.
I've followed the strike but it was so many confusing things which didn't clear up things for me. Since I've followed ST fully, you unironically made the strike very clear to me how the deal and residuals work. Great editing btw!
Woah I just had this video recommended to me out of nowhere. Very cool man, most actors don’t ever talk about this sort of thing which is why I find it so cool and interesting.
You earned my sub ❤
P.S. you did an awesome job in the show. Very cool you got to be a part of it.
Your acting is so great!!!! I can NOT believe how different you are!
Bro, he's such a nice person in real life, I didn't expect that. lol. Loved your role is stranger things! Keep acting! :D
I like how informative this is!! you seem like a genuine down to earth guy!!
Can't believe you went sooo deep into the economics of this - Kudos!
Tristan, can you do a video on journaling in character? You've mentioned it a few times and it sounds super helpful, though I'm not sure where to start. If you could do a more in-depth video on how to do that it would be extremely helpful!
Thanks for watching! That could be something somewhere down the line. Full transparency, it's a very niche video that would really struggle in the algorithm until we build a solid foundational subscriber base. So that's why we're making some more broad wide-appeal videos so that we can get to the place our more niche acting content performs well.
I might try to make a little video for a community post or the free Skool group though covering this, it might just not be a full-fledged published video.
@@TristanSpohnAKASpidermanyea 100%, I have never watched Stanger things, I don’t know anything about your character but I am highly interested in the finance
Great video it’s good to know that actors that play small roles can keep earning money down the track, can’t wait for the last season to come out
As a fellow actor I stumbled upon this video via my Stranger Things Algo + trying to find new interesting content from fellow actors in the industry. This is such a well filmed, broken down video including so much insight that not enough people talk about. Thank you so much for creating + taking time to film something like that. ❤
Great video, Tristan! I worried that the creatives would be missing out on residuals once streaming took over, especially during the pandemic, so I'm glad to know that they are being paid out.
Man, great video. Something tells me you won’t be just an actor. Super smart
hope i see your work in other shows/movies in the near future! i will be rooting for you!
Thank you me too!! I’ve gotten really close to a couple huge projects. Booked a few that got cancelled or trapped in development. So it’s coming!
Don’t know if I needed to know all of that but it was very interesting. You did a great job and I enjoyed how you sold it and kept me watching. You are very talented! Not that you needed to hear that from me. Press on!
I really like how you said how much and also the why!! Solid video 🔥🔥
I'm not an actor, but that's very interesting. Thank you Tristan!
I'm glad you enjoyed this, thanks for watching!
Great video! Also, thats a massive win for actors. I'm glad the strike worked out well.
Thanks for watching! Yes, I'm happy progress was made!
I remember an interview with Larry Linville, who played Major Frank Burns on MASH, and he was asked about residuals. He mentioned he got enough to pay the cable bill. At that time you could find a rerun of MASH on TV every day.
You are the only person I’ve seen be so transparent n real about these topics. Thanks 🙏

it wouldve been so nice to see you in season 5 in a flashback or something your acting was so good
This was such an intresting video to watch!! I'd never heard about Residuals before
Did not expect for you to have a youtube channel, gotta say you present things in a thorough informative way. Interested to see what other roles and videos you end up doing. Also even though i get it could be 10x more, whatever money you made is pretty good to me lool

Congrats to you and I wish you well in your career. Thank you for the breakdown. Also I enjoyed your episodes of Stranger Things. You're a very fine actor.
Such a cool video, thanks for sharing and breaking everything down so clearly.
I've never even made it past season one of Stranger Things, but somehow I stumbled upon your channel, and your videos are alyways interesting to watch
Haha I love that! Our goal is to just attract viewers interested in film acting. Because my only big credit is Stranger Things we tend to leverage it a lot while we try to build an audience. But most of our content is just film in general, not Stranger Things. So I’m happy you found us!!
Wow, GREAT information Tristan!
Seems like you might make a GREAT president of SAG.
PLEASE continue your education and get your Law degree, along with your CPA.
Looks to me that you have a LOT of all this figured out and being a Lawyer or an Accountant really wouldn't be the worst fallback position. (And I'm not saying you're going to need one).
It's just that the industry can be so very fickle that a LOT of people who DO have talent, aren't getting the opportunities they deserve.
So again, it's so GREAT to have a fallback position all ready to go.
Great info...🎉🎉🎉!!!
Thanks for posting this man. I learned so much about how to value myself in the industry. Big fan hope to meet someday

Lovely to find this video and channel. You have such a clear & warm voice, and excellent at explaining Netflix economics to the layman. Hope 2025 is a brilliant year for you.
Great video - I've always been curious about how all that worked, and Tristan did a fantastic job explaining it. Thank you!
Very nice brother... stumbled on your channel today and really liked the kind of person you are... more success to you!
But..but..but. But I was subscribed. What do you mean? 😅 Great explanation on how actors earn a living. I never knew how that all worked but I'm glad you keep getting the long term benefits from a shows success. I subscribed a few videos ago, because even though you played a villian, you did it effectively and made me dislike your character a lot. Which makes you a great actor in my opinion. I also like the behind the scenes acting skills you share. I can't wait to see more big things from you. Keep at it brother. You're killing it.🏆
Haha just had to make sure. And I'm happy you found this informative! Thanks for being here!
How much Tristan has changed since 2021 is crazy.
Hi Tristan. I just subscribed to you recently. You were great in Stranger Things. Such a giant show to be a part of. Anything in the pipeline for you that you can talk about? Regarding projects? Be great to see you in other stuff.
Hey! Thanks for subscribing! There are a few small projects in the works, but it's been a rough last two years of the industry. The nature of being an actor is getting really close to a ton of things but not clicking for reasons you can't control. I've booked huge roles in shows that never made it out of development and been final consideration for ones that proceeded to get canceled with the role entirely scrapped in the process. It's just showing up again and again and doing your best in ways that the public never sees. The channel is a great way for me to have control over my creativity while navigating the unpredictability this industry has.
@@TristanSpohnAKASpidermanI have a friend who wants to get into acting too and he said a similar thing. It can be a tough business.
I enjoyed the show, cool way to break it down. I have always been interested in acting but probably will never get the chance outside of my content creation stuff.
Thanks. Pretty interesting. Also great acting in those episodes m8. The things i wanted to do to your character with a very dull spoon would probably make even Lars can Trier shiver ;) No seriously
Breaking down the business...More videos NEED to focus on that...Especially when it comes to contracts, management...etc.
See it as an effort for anyone new to the business to be aware of potential pitfalls.
Grats on your success. Thanks for the breakdown/inside information.

@@theyeetus1428 lol yeah and he was on for like 5 mins
@@theyeetus1428Better not to judge, actors have to audition against others to be selected (like going for a job interview), some roles are short and then have to do it all again...
Production days may run 16+ hours (including hair and makeup) and well known actors may be signed on for movies and TV series roles to maximise exposure and their income across their working life. Note some actors fall away into other careers due to the intensity.

Thank you so much for sharing your unique insight Tristan! In fact, your video made me think of an acting gig I did many years ago in Singapore, for the Australian open, a two day shoot, paid $2000! Awesome yay!
Yet, that promo dominated the commercials 6 months on the largest network channels, in every country in Asia, from China to the Maldives!
