I love the composers from Age of Romanticism, but I don't know much about Brahms clarinet music, so listening to this has been a good experience for me. Thanks to Anthony McGill for his hard work & leadership in classical music. I Just learned of this guy today; and through his example, I'm reminded of a Baptist hymn in my hymnal, "Heaven Came Down & Glory Filled My Soul", because this guy is living out part of my dream. Much congratulations to him, & thanks for this interview! The questions & answers were so profound. Great work from all three of you: musicians & journalist.
I really enjoyed listening to Mr. McGill talk about his youth and musical journey...breaking barriers! Not only does he play beautifully, he has a wonderful voice and way of speaking😘. Adorable the way he talked about being short!
This is the most nuanced, most subtle, most musical performance of the Brahms Eb Sonata I've ever heard. Anthony McGill is my favorite clarinetist and I used to regularly hear Harold Wright. If only they hadn't broken the flow with the applause between movements.
+Oroki Rice my teacher told us about this guy and i came home and looked him up i want to sound like him as i get better and i want to go to bass clarinet do you play an instrament
44:05 Enough said. So tired of middle school band directors telling kids they can and cannot play certain instruments because of the way they look/are structured. It is an easy out for them to build their program based on instrumentation, not the kids doing what the want to do most. This guy would NEVER be allowed to play clarinet in the local schools here because, "Your lip structure is not suited for clarinet. Here...play the Tuba or Trombone."

Amazing. Beautiful. Brilliant.

Try listening to Nicolas Baldeyrou or Martin Fröst. They are true legends like Mr Gill!
I was there! Anthony McGill offered a fantastically beautiful performance.

De la belle clarinette Bravo !!! Beaucoup de nuances subtiles.
Wonderful!
Lovely, thoughtful performance!
That was a good answer, "No, I don't remember." As simple as that. I learned what panache means today, & Anthony McGill certainly has it. :-)

Lip structure is rather unimportant for clarinet...
I mean you can easily adjust the fold.
@@cesteres yes but it does help for embouchre.
Having just listened to Martin Frost play this😬. I can only thank you for your recording 🙏🏾
what does this mean?
0:12 Allegro amabile
8:38 Allegro appassionato
14:25 Andante con moto - Allegro
Great rendition of Brahms' Sonata op.120/2
👏👏👏👏
May I ask you the program?
First piece is Brahms E flat major sonata, Op. 120 #2.
dont ever perform this piece unless the pianist has an incentive to practice their part. as in you're either paying them or they are being graded.
find a pianist who loves the music and listens; one who doesn't cover your sound with his pounding.
Brahms is hard in every way.
I made that mistake
Finally, awkward page turn.
