RBass is brilliant, there was a period when I was basically rinsing over every piece I was making. I definitely reach out to beef kicks up, usually setting the frequency to where the kick thumps
I am relatively new to recording and mixing. Your presentations and information have really helped me learn and understand so thank you. I have purchased several Waves products and I really like them. I'm not sure about the update plan but I'm sure I'll see this issue in the future. Their support has truly been fantastic for me so far. I think RBass works very well and really appreciate the in-depth look at how it functions and can be used. As for other Waves plug-in's, I've found the SSL EV-2 Channel strip is very effective. I basically put this first, on almost every track, unless I am also using Vocal Rider, Bass Rider, RX mouth clicks etc first. I find it gives me a great starting point. I've heard other mixers say don't use EQ or compression if it isn't necessary but feel this really helps me dial in the initial sound I'm looking for and often solve a lot of issues with one plug-in. Is this a good idea? It sounds good to me and that's what I am basing the usage on. I would appreciate feedback from any viewers as well.
I have RBass and it is cool. Black Salt Audio have Low End Control. For my money, the BSA is the winner - does pretty much the same but has the Enhance control as well which really make a kick or bass just sparkle. Worth checking out
I may be mistaken, but it was my impression that the patent behind the waves algorithm had expired a few years ago; and had been implemented in some new alternatives to rbass and maxbass. Melda's mbassador, Voxengo's LF Max Punch, Unfiltered Audio's Bass Mint and Denise Audio's Bass XL come to mind. Also I don't think rbass generates any subharmonics, but only generates upper harmonics above the crossover
Thank you, Thank you - been using RBASS for a few years. Mostly on a buss, passing a portion of the bass guitar signal through. I've started using it on vocals that way and I like what it does. I have a deeper understanding of the tool after your video.
Interesting to hear about the changes and it appears there is a deal at waves at the moment of this post. Thanks for. the time energy and effort in sharing the plugin. Keep up the great work 🏴☠❤🏴☠
Thanks for your analysis. Was wondering what the hype is all about. I think I'm gonna buy this after watching your vid. Also, would love to see a vid on Waves MV2.
I watch music related videos in my mastering room and, frankly, I don't like what RBass does at all. It sounded like a tuned resonance peak most of the time... I'm sure there's more to it but on the kicks it added a "boing" more than a "thump".
Dan Worrell has done a brilliant video on the R-Bass explaining exactly what it does. Basically it's adding harmonics that can give the bass more definition when played on bass light devices like mobile phones. 😎
I seriously love this series. You have such a good way of explaining things to newer folks while keeping more experienced people interested. I would love to see you go through why everyone loves the 1176 and la-2a and if you can get the same effects with just the neutron compressor or something. I recently learned about the whispery vocals trick on the 1176 where all radio buttons are punched in and it brings up breaths (something I'd heard in indie pop female vocals for ever and couldn't figure out how to recreate) In a similar vein I always hear people say 'oh this plugin 1176 better be able to do the pumping drum thing that the rack unit 1176 can' and I just have no clue what that means even though I must've heard it 5 times from different creators on youtube. Exploding open those tricks would be fantastic. (Why is this old piece of gear a go-to... why are there 50 plugins of this one unit.)
Waves has reallly been brilliant at taking many of their plugins and combining them into various plugins that are useful and also give them chances to use a lot of the same code to offer a "new" product. The L1 limiter introduced their concept of of increased volume from only lowering a threshold. RBass, Rvox, and Renaissance Axx all work the same way but they seemed to just have altered the code on each of those plugins on the attack and release times to suit the plugin's specific use (Bass, vocals, and guitars, respectively). Now, with those compressor styles implemented, they could combine that code with their MaxxBass plugin which essentially creates additional harmonic and there you have 3 more new plugins coming from combining code from 2 existing plugins. They just had to alter the code to make RBass add low end harmonics, RVox add mid and upper mid harmonics. RenAxx I think doesn't add harmonics, but it's moreso just an L1 style coded compressor that set release times and you can alter the attack time. L1 just has set attack time but only lets you do the opposite in adjusting the release time. Really, a lot of the artist series plugins I suspect are some of those artists' favorite chains of waves plugins.
Very quickly: I think the issue most people have with Waves is the combination of the seemingly "endless sales" combined with their Update Plan and the fact they have been around for thirty years at this point makes it seem like they are siphoning people off for money. I know engineers have even more grievances, particularly relying on older engineering techniques (i.e. no oversampling, manual gain staging). Personally, I think their pricing can be improved, especially when it comes to the more legacy offerings, and even how the updates work (i.e. I think hotfixes within a version should always be free, regardless of whether the plan is current). But all in all, I like what Waves Audio does and I still use their stuff. (I also use other stuff because I don't believe in being exclusive when it comes to my tool set.) And to answer your question about beloved tools: I think you already covered Soundtoys Decapitator. But basically, anything by them can give you ready-made material. While this is a relatively newer tool (and maybe you already covered this also), I would include Soundtheory's Gulfoss.
I've read the same things but mostly anger at their Update Plan which honestly feels justified (the anger, not the plan). That being said, Waves kind of invented the audio plugin and they've been making great stuff for years, and continue to, so it's hard to completely disengage from the brand. Plus, there's some tools out there they make which are genuinely unique and original like Reel ADT. TBH when I make these videos I download the trials and don't proceed any further. The only Waves plugin I've paid for and use a lot is the aforementioned ADT
Great plugins, but I stopped buying Waves plugins after having to fork up money to update my plugins. I've found good alternatives to most of their plugins by now.
Of course, they make almost all of their bundles very easy to use free (if you never update) on looptorrent. So you never have to pay them until you can actually make money with their software. It's hard to complain about them if they never weaselled out your money. Right? It's pretty ridiculous there are people putting their money into software you download [it is essentially just code a computer reads; a bunch of I's and O's]. And those who pay for software will never truly own it, they're simply borrowing the "software" aka a code. If you actually paid to own... you'd get the source code.
I think you had mono plugin inserted on a stereo track here or vise versa, I kept hearing changes in L or R side when you were demonstrating the effect of the plugin
Excellent video, thank you! I would be very interested in your thoughts on Waves Max Bass and a comparison between the two. Also UA Precision Enhancer HZ
@@ManchesterMusic So I noticed that I could hear the kick way more on the right earphone, than the left one. Then around 10:07, it all of a sudden became more stereo sounding when you messed with the intensity knob. What's that all about?
I know what it does and I like what it technically does. But most of the time I end up with no RBass on my tracks. Today, there are many other ways to get good bass or more fat sound, especially if you are using soft synths. I actually just updated my Rbass for 12$, which I bought in 2014, so I could use it now again. But in reality I actually don't use it.
When you pushed the Freq slider to 154, the audio all of a sudden got out of phase from left to right? any idea what's going on there? That's something really weird.
DJ Swivel's Knocktonal absolutely smashes R Bass. I no longer perpetuate the opportunism Waves exploits at their customer's expense and it feels great!
@@ManchesterMusic thank you. also I'm not affiliated with them, just putting it out there haha. Would be nice to also see UAD stuff since a lot of their plugins have native versions.
BTW - When you chose small speaker prep and then said you didn't hear much difference. Well, I was listening on small speakers and it made a huge difference! Was kind of a fake stereo sort of thing going on. Big change though.
I like this video! I like the way you review and explain this! Not everyone does a good job at this! Thank you! Do you have WAVES TORQUE or SMACK ATTACK? If you do, would you do this video again only with the plugins that I mentioned?
I know I'm leaning into apples-versus-oranges territory here, but I much prefer Sculptor's approach of shaping rather than replacement. Sculptor, like R Bass, has controls for blend, intensity, and band-pass, along with a contour-style tone control-and targets for just about any other common instrument. Still, it's hard to really compare the two, since Sculptor isn't available apart from the (incredible) Neutron suite. That said, I'd love to see a WIEILWTT on Neutron! A couple other video ideas: - Nectar versus Neutron. I barely use Nectar and find it mostly superfluous, but I feel like I might just be missing what makes it special. - Neoverb. I adore Exponential Audio's reverbs but hate the sounds I get from Neoverb even though it's supposedly based on the same algorithms.
I used an eq analyzer to see exactly what it does and all it is is a suuuuper high bell curve at about a q of 1. Even having the intensity at -24 it’s still giving you a 2db boost at whatever frequency you picked
Great video thanks! Reminds me how much I love RBass. But having switched from PC to Mac M1, I refused to subscribe to the Waves update plan on principle, so will have to go without! At the moment, I am just using saturation, EQ and compression to get the right bass, until I see another plugin which works as well as RBass that I can buy as a one-off.
The idea kinda comes from the dbx dbx subharmonic synthesizer. Which eric Valentine used all of the time. Which plugin Alliance has a plugin based off the bx_subsynth. This is the next closed thing IMO other than the other plugin from waves maxxbass.
I think the RC20 had more hype so your video might have been late to the party. I like these types of videos though. Wouldn't know what it does and if I need it or not.
Totally agree with this. It was an excellent video about an amazing plugin, but RC20 is such a known quantity at this point that any new video about it will have a hard time breaking through.
Oh ok, so about my previous comment, I just noticed, you're doing something very wrong in this video. And I suggest you do a new comparison. Please don't judge my comment as if I'm an entitled a** commenting. I like your content and I think you just need to fix this one. So you inserted R-Bass on a Stereo track or bus, and because of that it loaded a Dual-Mono instance of it. You can see that throughout the video the plugin is only controlling the L side (that's why it's blue), you need to hit the "Couple" button to control both equally. So in certain settings it is very noticeable that L is out of phase with R, and this is completely changing the results of your test here. I have actually been a victim of this happening once on a mix in Logic (which is my main DAW, and still happened to me). Seems like R-Bass might have been designed as just mono, and that's why Logic loads a Dual-Mono version on stereo strips. For a next time, I suggest if you want to basically collapse a stereo buss with a mono plugin, you can do so by opt+click on the plugin arrows when you want to insert, this allows you to force a Mono instance on a Stereo track or bus, and thus solves the possibility of any issues if you want to force to mono after some other plugins. And of course if you just want to make the bus mono, you just click+hold the two little balls at the top of the channel strip and choose Mono from the drop down menu. Again, please, don't take it the wrong way, I mean good here! I just happen to consume a lot of youtube content about audio, and I want it to be of good service for viewers, and I think yours normally is. Heck, this one is too, but there's just something funky going on in your tests because of this issue, I just attempted different setting with R Bass on a project, and the issue at higher frequency settings was non-exixtent. So in your video, it's definitely because of what I'm pointing out. Cheers! and keep up the great work!
I use R Bass, but nothing like at the intensity you went for in this video. I have it so the meter in the middle is barely showing anything. Any more than that sounds horribly boomy to my ears.
One of the interesting things about making videos is how people react to the level of processing. I’ve made moves in videos prior where people complain that they cannot hear the effects. I’ve made videos where I get comments like the one you’ve left (see my Decapitator vid). To bring as many people along, and to really hear what the tool is doing, I made the decision a long time ago to be liberal with the processing. This way everyone can get a feel for what’s happening and perceive what’s happening.
@@ManchesterMusic yeah... Most people watching will be on laptop speakers so probably the right call. It's all just taste anyway. The minute you start listening to how someone else thinks you should mix, you're doing it wrong.
I have no other waves plugins, (had none for years) other than the Renaissance series. RBass is irreplaceable, rvox and r-deesser are really really great plugins. I still hate waves, though.
I stopped using it because I felt like I was being too dependent on it and I was afraid of getting very "boomy" and muddy mixes but maybe I was just using it in a very amateur way. Also, is it weird that when you went to a higher Freq something weird was happening to the phase? Sounded like an stereo imager even
Ummmm just want to make sure that you knew you had the plug-in in dual mono the whole time? With waves plug-ins if you want to use them on a stereo track, you have to insert the stereo version. Maybe it was intentional? 🤷🏻♂️
@@ashalboy Huh? Not sure I understand what you mean but he had the kick on a stereo track. There are 2 different ways you can set stereo plugins in Logic. There is stereo and dual mono. In dual mono, each side gets processed separately. So what happens on one side doesn't happen on the other necessarily. I'm fully aware that mono plugins are for mono sources and stereo plugins are for stereo sources. That's common logic. Just not sure what it has to do with what we are talking about. You do know not every kick is in mono, correct? This kick is in mono (or at least it appears to be) but he has it on a stereo track. That's not that uncommon. Most samples come in stereo for example, even tho they technically are in mono.
I often had problem with this tool. It's Easy to abuse and have the opposite you want: from Better to worse. But sometimes it's a Life saver. I think a good and more flexible tool Is Spiff. And, by the way, I'd like to have a "Why Is everybody in love with" Sooth. What do you think?
That plugin is just affecting one side. Seems like you got it in duel mono and it’s unlinked. EDIT. MY BAD. just saw the pinned comment. I’ll leave my comment anyway for the algorithm
I don't get the Waves hating thing... I have quite a few go-to waves plugs, and why would I need to update them? They work, I know them inside out and I'm happy with them as they are. Sure, their newer offerings are cash-cow rubbish quite often and no oversampling this day and age is indefensible, but then just don't buy them - trial is easy, if it's useful to you, buy, if not don't - simples... MV is still a go to for me, I like their SSL compressor, Schepps Omni channel is excellent, a few others. I think it's just become a fad to hate Waves because they've been around forever and their 'sales' are laughable!
When you find out that it cheats, it's not hard to let go. What they describe is a bit of a red herring, sure the harmonics are fine, that's psychoacoustics 101. but it adds a ton in volume to the fundamental too. So the idea that it's 'free' volume or clarity is a lie.
I bought a couple of bundles, I spent about $350. After the time allotted, the plugins didn't work anymore. Then they wanted me pay. " I was freaking Pissed!!" I said take your greedy, corporate plugins and shove them where your globalist ass don't get no sunshine!!!
@@ManchesterMusic I had so many. Chris Lord Algi, waves, plugins. It was a long time ago. Why do you want to know all these questions? If you work for them. Look up my name. You will see what I purchased, and how much money your company ripped me off!! I'll never get that money back. That was free money for them!! I, was learning how to use them, and then they "Pulled The PluG " Here's a free song Idea for you, that's what I do. I'm a Producer, Engineer, musician, Singer song writer... Premium is worth it. You can get 5 accounts for $25 a month. Split it with your friends. I had to go a day without when I switched from paying apple tax. I ended up just taking a break from YT for a day. You are gonna either pay with your time and patience or monies.
OUCH! I’m listening in headphones and it’s doing something DREADFUL with the phasing! It was so bad I had to rip the cans off of my head as fast as I could! What the heck was THAT about?? Now I know - NEVER use this on a stereo track! 😳🤢 🤷♂️🤷♂️
That seems to be the takeaway. I just discovered that about 8 plugs I bought but haven’t used in ages are no longer working on my machine unless I pay for the update plan. It was really disappointing.
Again, because the goal is to show how tools like the one featured can improve what you have. Not everyone Mixing gets access to well-recorded material. It’s a mixed bag so you have to enhance it.
Hey kiddo. You can get around that rental software. By creating your own dedicated, Audio Workstation Computer.. That doesn't go onto the Internet. It is not connected to the outside world. And you have removed the battery on the motherboard for the clock. It still thinks it's midnight, 2000. And always will. And so nothing will timeout! It's like having a severe brain injury. You're still alive. Like me. But life isn't exactly the same anymore. Like me. So I'm just become another me. Not fully knowing who me used to be? But I know I've done this for a living for over 50 years. Or use to. As I now have recorded no one since before the pandemic. And so that is it. I am done. I tried my best for my last eight years prior to actual retirement. Never being allowed to here in Texas. Only because they don't like my types from the LGBTQ, community. And with their religious freedom. They have the right to pummel me, deny me all of my constitutional rights. Because they don't like the federal Constitution! And I don't know how this happened to me? It doesn't happen in the USA but this is Texas. Not exactly part of the USA. They are not affiliated nor aligned with anybody in the USA. They are a people's, a culture bred on hate unto themselves. Texans hate everybody whom are not exactly like themselves. And that is conservative extremists of a Nazi origin. And not fit. To call themselves Americans or live in the USA with the rest of us. Because they ain't Americans they are fascists Nazi Gestapo pigs. And they have the better way through their Jesus! Not your Jesus. Their Jesus! Your Jesus is no good! Not as good as their Jesus! You should die for that! Thinking your Jesus is better than their Jesus! Because there is only one right Jesus! Their, Jesus! And so we have now discovered. The planet is now overpopulated with 8 billion people! And is now starting to practice, self, retroactive abortion upon themselves. When a species knows it's been around for too long and time to go, extinct. This is how they carry on, thusly. They gang together in gangs of thugs to rape and pillage and destroy. The worst fake low-budget movies. For TV. And we saw the Q-ANON Shaman. In his elaborate costume and makeup. Ready for Halloween treats. And a padded room.. That is not an adult male Homo sapien. That is an out-of-control child. That knows they are doing something wrong. And tries it anyhow. Testing mommy and daddy. But could get away with it at, our Nations Capitol building. Where he had a great time acting like a total ass hole! I mean what was that? You send those to the state mental hospitals. Forever. This is what has happened and occurred. Since most state mental institutions have been closed over recent decades. Yes as bad as those state mental hospital institutions once were. It's where certain people needed to live. Where they can be properly cared for to waste away to die. Because they can never function in society, ever. And you have to put them somewhere. You can't just stick them on the street or in jail. They need a proper, metal hospital. State mental institution. Where Lauren Bo Bert, Marjorie Soylent Greene, Teddy Cruz, Matt Gates and so many others all need to go! Because how can they believe. Forcing Americans to live their way. Is a proper American patriot? Where? How? How does that mindset improve our USA? It doesn't. It destroys it. And everybody wants that magic pill, low frequency, bass extension, plug-in. Because they don't know how to do it in analog, themselves? Go away! Shoe little children shoe! I mean really? Really? It's called a frequency weighted, limiter trick. We had to do it in analog before it was created in, digital algorithms. I had numerous ways of doing it. I remember when I created my own, Aphex Aural Exciter. Using the phase shift between tracks of a record head. On a tape recorder. With no tape running. From the adjacent channel in record. And Voilà! I mmade my own in 1979! And it was truly funny. It's pathetic. And the concept around how it actually works. But you have to know something about tape recorders, deeply. And well I am a world authority and was, Management at, Scully. Back in the day. So? Some of us know stuff kids don't. Kids in their 40s and 50s. That missed my era by, 20-30 years. When we created everything of the anything that originally existed. That no longer exists. Nor the companies except in memorial name only. Answer who wants to help me out reopen, Scully? I think everyone's dead? But somehow I'm not yet? It must've been the pot? Yeah, it was the pot, medicinally used of course. I have major traumatic brain damage. I found out only 17 years ago. No wonder! I'm not just whistling Savant here. I think I are one? The doctors can't explain me. So when it comes to religion? Which I don't believe in. But others do. They all say there is some kind of plan. That's why I guess I'm still alive? And here to spread the word of good audio purchases and practices. And thos tchotchkes. Just interesting to wannabe, Junior audio children. That want to experiment with, Audio Masturbation. When there wasn't enough when I could. Hardly anything existed! You had your choice of 3 or four microphones. 3 or four audio mixers. A couple of outboard equalizers and dynamic range limiters. And if you were lucky? Really lucky? You might have at least one, EMT, Reverb Plate? Because Springs were not worth a damn! All they do is pop and flutter and garble sound. And they are dark sounding. With no life. No Sizzle. No Pizzazz. No guts no glory. Just watery fluttery garbage spring reverb. Not worth owning. There was one. By AKG call the BX-20 E. Which was marginally all right. I think for only,, $2500 back in, 1971? Or was that 72? I forget? I'm getting old and senile now. Hello my name is Remy. What's yours? Oh right we. Already, went through that.

Very helpful as usual, thank you!
awesome, I've been wondering about this plugin
Ditto. It’s definitely a “set it and forget it” approach to beefing up bass elements.

I'd like to see some Softube stuff. The Weiss collection, Empirical Labs, classic compressors, etc.
Sounds good!
@@ManchesterMusic thank you. also I'm not affiliated with them, just putting it out there haha.
Would be nice to also see UAD stuff since a lot of their plugins have native versions.
Why does the kick jump around in the stereo field? Or is it only doing it for me?
i wanted to hear the kick on the plugin so i turn volume up then it end and your voice came super loud killed my ears
I'll check them both out!
A couple other video ideas:
- Nectar versus Neutron.
Great Vid and Channel man!
Thanks for the visit
Great video thanks! Reminds me how much I love RBass. But having switched from PC to Mac M1, I refused to subscribe to the Waves update plan on principle, so will have to go without! At the moment, I am just using saturation, EQ and compression to get the right bass, until I see another plugin which works as well as RBass that I can buy as a one-off.
fathom five.. airwindows
free version of rbass, was passed on to me and figured i should for others.
The idea kinda comes from the dbx dbx subharmonic synthesizer. Which eric Valentine used all of the time. Which plugin Alliance has a plugin based off the bx_subsynth. This is the next closed thing IMO other than the other plugin from waves maxxbass.
sound goes center to right in sometimes (in bypass\on)

Do you think that maxxvolume by waves does the same thing and more as this plugin?
I'd be really interested in what you have to say about the Sonnox Oxford Inflator...
How does this compare to Izotopes low end focus?
Good explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
I love using RBass to thicken up a lead guitar that needs some ummmpff!
I think you need to couple the plugin L & R!

What drums plugin you are using in this video ?
I think the RC20 had more hype so your video might have been late to the party.
I like these types of videos though. Wouldn't know what it does and if I need it or not.
Totally agree with this. It was an excellent video about an amazing plugin, but RC20 is such a known quantity at this point that any new video about it will have a hard time breaking through.
Keen insights for sure! What should the next plug-in be?
@@ManchesterMusic softube classic compressors just came out, also the UAD native stuff 😁

New headphones..
Does insight have an oscilloscope? I have it but I have not found one in there and it feels like it’s glaring hole in its feature set.
No oscilloscope there but there’s one in Neutron. I hear ya.
I use it for post production over music.
Sounded like an stereo imager even
Sorry, I just saw the dual mono explanation ;D
I've used this for 20 years now, and nothing else *quite* does the RBass thing.
Except for Waves True Bass
@@esahm373 - Never tried that...
Have you ever tried the vog from empirical labs? Is on UAD platform
Yep, it's the one I use the most actually.
Ummmm just want to make sure that you knew you had the plug-in in dual mono the whole time? With waves plug-ins if you want to use them on a stereo track, you have to insert the stereo version. Maybe it was intentional? 🤷🏻♂️
Yipper
@@ManchesterMusic Just making sure! I would hope someone would point it out to me if was a mistake. 🙂
@@matt_nyc_audioengineer yes using the mono in mono sound (for eg: kick) and stereo in stereo sound is right way to use it.
@@matt_nyc_audioengineer Got it. As my hearing even using stereo plugin in mono sounds mono to me. But using mono plugin in stereo sounds mono

Can I suggest the Effect Rack plugins? Also PRO-Q 3

When you find out that it cheats, it's not hard to let go.
What they describe is a bit of a red herring, sure the harmonics are fine, that's psychoacoustics 101. but it adds a ton in volume to the fundamental too. So the idea that it's 'free' volume or clarity is a lie.

Anything and everything they possibly can! As they all run around screaming and hooting and having lost their minds! And they think they are in a TV show, made for Movie.
