Huge fan of your stuff. Going back when I heard some of your UBK Happy Funtime Hour questions read. Your videos are so well done. You have a great ability to explain without confusing. It was a big help a few years ago when I was checking out Izotope for the first time. If I could donate man, I totally would. Keep it up. You are definitely one of the few on here who talks honestly, and doesn't have a bias that I see in too many channels. Or withhold content unless someone pays for 50 courses. Much appreciated
I can't say enough good things about this series. You see a lot of people use these VSTs but they don't explain why they're standard in one way or another. This is absolutely invaluable.
That plug in is worth every penny. It’s incredible how clear mixes sound with that. The Waves SSL Bus Compressor is good too, though I’ve noticed that you get quite a bit of harshness with it. I don’t know why though.
The SSL G is often on my mixbuss, for its lovely Glue. I use the Waves one, so no sidechain capabilities for me on the plugin itself, but I do not really need them where it lives. Needless to say I am absolutely in love with it ❤
I normally use the Brainworx Townhouse comp. Technically not a "G" compressor but I do like it. The native SSL (v2) is one of my favorites as well, especially with oversampling turned ON and even the Reason one sounds pretty good, i use it as plugin in another DAW haha. I dont like Waves' consumer-unfriendly business model depite the relatively low price tag, and UAD ties you to their (hardware) eco system (well, not anymore?). The market is pretty well saturated with SSL comps, many flavors and to choose from and many of them sound different only if you A/B them
Thanks for this review. Quick note. In the same price range as Waves and possibly better than all contenders, please have a look at the L-bus comp v2. It's made by an English developer and he makes really awesome tools. Maybe you can review this as well. Thanks man!
After trying literally ALL of these emus- my favorite one is TimP’s SSL Bus comp- running in Acustica Audio’s Nebula program. I literally cannot tell the difference between a hardware one, and when ive compared the teo: the tim p sounds better ususally. I have friends who have sold their hardware for it, and his other stuff too
I love this kinda of stuff but as a newbie Im just not hearing much/any difference from when the compressor is on or off. Im listening through expensive studio headphones. Any advice or links to tutorials on what I should be listening for? Thanks!
I prefer the official ssl one. It shows you the values. Uad got dsp thats only advantage but it still adds a little latency either way. The uad one is very hard to use for electronic stuff
Hi Jeff, I‘ve been enjoying your videos so far. And if you really take requests for other reviews I’d love to hear from you what you think about Sonimus Tuco or even making a comparison to this one on this video. No pressure and greetings from Ireland. Mick
Great work ...just one minor suggestion.. the volume of your voice over (mic) was so much louder than the music examples that I had to constantly adjust the volume to compensate for the differences in sound level if you could balance that out it would be cherries ! Other than that this post was excellent !
Great question. I stop high-passing when it sounds like enough of the low-end has returned to the body of the audio and the compressor is still gelling everything together nicely and the needle is moving such that we’re reducing 1-3dB of gain. I hope this helps.
Typically I’ll dial in the sidechain then compress what’s left with the controls you mentioned. It really depends on the mix/session. No one size fits all.
There is a free ssl g buss comp emulation. It’s called busterSE by Analog Obsession. It also has the side chain filter.
I would love to see him do a video on some Analog Obsession stuff. They are very much worthy of the name.

Sylvester?!? whoa, blow the dust off!
Logic Pro has an SSL G emulator that is part of their included plugins. It’s the “vintage VCA” compressor. Nice.
Glad I found this Vid, dig the way you go through it, just bought it and now have a good understanding of how to use it, Thanks MM.
I enjoyed every bit of this video. "Keep em flowing". Your deliverance was amazing, very clear.!
Thanks dude, appreciate it
Great explanation.. I also recommend the Airwindows Logical compressor. Underrated digital emulation.

this post sums up my take completely :) well done 😆
@@jesperborgstrm3385 cheers!
Glad that was the first video i found about ssl g, thanks sir
wow , just played Sylvester 2 days ago. Let me show you how........Do you wanna funk with me. Classic
Hey man love the videos. I constantly find myself adjusting volume while watching tho. Great content tho!
Ik multimedia emulation sounds amaizing too, thanks for the video! 🤗
You're welcome!
I can vouch for the haunted LaFont mixer 😂 great stuff

great video, I have the waves version and love it
I Love Patrick Cowley!! ❤🔥. Excellent Video

I own that one as well. Love the sound and the glue of it! Especially the newer version Tim releases was a huge step forward :)
Depending on the meter ballistics, the actual compression on peaks could be much more than indicated.

That bass is actually more Bobby O .;P
Great Plugin! Question: Does the SoundID plug color what we are hearing on this video?
I will get back to you on this!

Lyrics for that loop...."Do you think me sexy...? Do you want me Body....?"
The one is Reason is pretty great as well. We live in spoiled times.
No one ever talks about the one in Reason.
@@JAEFORDbeats Reason ain't excatly prime time, but some things they did really well.
I've probably seen more mixing engineers talk about the Waves version than this one, to be honest.
The price point on the Waves edition is very compelling after all. And they make some decent stuff. Not surprised.
dont all compressors do that?
SSLs version sounds better to me 🤷♂️
Me thinks the glue compressor on ableton live 10 is no longer going to be the glue compressor of choice for me.
I heart New York is better for parallel compression... that plugins the GOAT. Its the only thing that beats the SSL
How do you decide how much to side chain out ?

@@ManchesterMusic you do the side chain after you’ve dialed in everything else right? As far as threshold ratio attack and release

Typically yes but sometimes the other way around. Always adjusting and listening for what gets me results I’m happiest with.
Analogs Obsession's makes one for $5
Let me show you how. ;)
Thank you for, uh, sort of making it clear that the company name is not UAD, but Universal Audio lol
Hardware sounds better for sure

@@alien-hs1zn yes. Plug in is a illusion. Is almost there but not equal to hardware. If u have the money. Just buy it. If u don’t use the plug in.
