I own a 330d m sport touring and this is definitely going to be my next car. So great to see so many reviewers on here putting thumbs down to suvs and bigging up estates. Why anyone would want an x3 over this leaves me perplexed
cannot agree more. suv are a non sense why on earth would you like to own a x3 40d over this wonderful 340d? suv are slower, more expensive, ugly, too high, too heavy. their consumption and co2 are higher (towards equivalent engine). their handling is absolute shit. visibility as well. the are less comfortable but do not give more space than an estate. why? why? why? this is probably the must absurd thing of nowadays era. the enormous success of suv. they should be banned from the cities. totally useless
@@farodopi5170 exactly, and its not like the x3 is any better off road, it just looks a bit taller but in reality it doesn’t actually have that much more ground clearance, in most scenarios 3 series will be just as good as the x3.
God as an American, I envy you guys for having access to this car! I love my E91 wagon so much and I can’t see any meaningful replacement for it when it kicks the can in like 10+ years
I’ve been running an F31 335d xdrive touring for nearly 4 years which still makes me smile every time I drive it & this is the only car I would consider replacing it with. They’re fantastic & do everything you could possibly want

I've had an F30 335d for 7 years and it's been 75k miles of flawless driving pleasure. The combination of economy and performance still impresses me to this day. I spent a long time considering options for a replacement that would surpass the 335d in every department, with EVs being at the forefront of my thinking. With the multitude of issues still surrounding EVs, namely range, weight and charging infrastructure, I concluded the only worthy successor is the M340d.
Yes Achilles got 59 MPG on the longer trips , it is just gold this car , if I needed a car ( I'm in the motor trade so don't )... I'd have this as a daily user.
This is an excellent video and review. I have the previous model 335d Touring and would be interested to know two things about this new model. 1) Does the X-Drive still have the smaller steering rack meaning wider turning circles compared to RWD... and 2) Does it have low M-Sport suspension (my model had to have the slightly higher SE suspension, which in fact combined with Adaptive is less crashy but still great handling)....
Hi and thanks! I believe the turning circle is the same as RWD now, and it does have the lower suspension. I guess this model had it all designed in from the start 👍
Maybe one to look at when I decide to part with my S4 - similar numbers (but 200nm torque more) and much better mpg - 19mpg long-term avg in the S4. But I would miss that exhaust note. Thanks for the vid!
In my opinion and observation people go for SUVs mainly for the ease of sliding in and out of the higher seats without having to lower yourself, and for putting a child in and out of a child seat at chest height rather than having to lower a child away from you at waist height or lower with a roof in the way. Personally, I hope to continue driving cars not SUVs and stay motivated to keeo in shape and work on my core and limb strength and I hope to continue that attitude as I get older! Health permitting of course.
Calling bullshit on the economy figures! I've got an F30 335d X-drive. It is impressive! But kick it around and the mpg drops below 30 pretty quickly! Cruise at 65 and it will average 55+mpg.... but you don't buy a 3 ltr twin turbo diesel to cruise at 65mph! The point with these cars is that you have cheap everyday driving, with legendary fast car slaying ability when needed! Downside is they sound shit compared with a B58 340i
The M340d has the B57 engine and is mild-hybrid. It is more efficient than the N57 engine in the F30 335d. It is actually a big difference. Energy class D instead of G. Sound of the 340i gets anoying over time, it is not that musicalistic.
The BMW 320D Touring is all the car you could ever need. I'll tell you why: + It's quick! Quick enough to enjoy the German autobahn + No X-Drive, electronics keep you safe anyway and this makes the car lighter, more responsive, smaller turning circle. + 4 cylinder also makes the car lighter and more responsive on smaller roads. + less expensive. Yes I agree that the M340D is faster on the German autobahn and it'll accelerate faster. But that's more performance than you'll need and for most people it'll not be as good as the 320D for their type of usage.
I am German. I currently own a 120d xDrive and can't wait to get my new M340d xDrive Touring in Novembre :) The 20d is good, but above 150km/h there isn't much that fascinates you. Love the punch of the 3 litre inline six engine and there is no real comparism between an rough 4 cylindre engine and a georgeous inline 6 cylindre of BMW. Absolutely NO comparism! ;) The 20d engine is nevertheless quite solid. It never gave up up and I never had any problems with it in 65000 kilometres....
With mild hybrid 330d x drive putting out over 280bhp I think that appeals more to me. However I think you have to go for the m sport plus pack or trim version to get the sports diff and adaptive suspension - have you tried the 330d x drive without those items for comparison to this 340d? Oddly for the non 'm performance models' the lower 'sports' spec appeals even more to me than the 'm sport' trim and has some different colours available, however the bigger deals on the m sport mean they end up costing the same. Means the sport and SE specs are quite unusual to see in the UK and my nearby dealers never have one in to look at
Great points. You’re right that the 330d is probably 90% of the car for a lot less money, sadly haven’t driven one yet. I wish we had the freedom of the German Configurators, where every engine model pretty much has base spec then you add your spec choice on top. So you could have the 340d engine with SE spec.
I had a 2017 435d coupe and I loved it in any ways but I needed a 4 door last year 👶🥰.. so I bought 2022 340d I love this one very much to be honest... but I feel the brake is little bit weaker compare to 435d!!! 🤷♂️(but still great) I searched online to find some tests or even brake performance numbers.. if anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful 🙏 both car fitted M performance brakes also

If you don’t do more than 10k miles/yr I’d say go for the 340i. The engine sounds better, is faster and when cruising barely any different to the d in economy. If you do big miles the 8-10mpg difference will be noticed, but not if you don’t. Thanks for watching! 😁👍
There are now six members of my family we had to go with the 69 reg 7 seater X5 diesel unfortunately..we do love it tough so not the end of the world Had to trade my 2018 m5 in as well☺️
I don't own or have ever owned an SUV. However most people who own them like the higher driving position. Also most drivers don't care about performance and handling. They tend to have other real world priorities when choosing a car.
The problem is, the higher driving position is only needed because there are so many SUVs on the roads now! If there were no SUVs nobody would even consider it. And the safety aspect is great for when you’re in the SUV, not so much when you’re in the Corsa that the 2.5-tonne car hits.

I did think at that point I wish I had an SUV. For people with mobility problems they’re easier. Probably easier for people with small children getting car seats in and the children into them. I bought the M340i rather than d as I'm not brave enough to buy a diesel with such uncertain legislation seemingly against diesel, and I prefer to buy cars (nearly new) without finance. Sorely tempted though, as I loved the torque of my old 535d, but petrol just seemed the safer option, though if I had bought the d, it would have been on finance to guard against bad legislation.
I got one two weeks ago and like you not a big fan of black wheels and had planned to change them but they are nice in the flesh so I have never loved a car so much as you say it has everything I previously had a 330d remapped so thought I knew what to expect this is so much more no doubt the cops will switch to this now good video
Nice! Great review and really well presented. Couple of questions if I may: Have you driven a 335d touring? Is this not pretty much the same concept? Also, I know folks buy SUV in the fashionable sense for sure.... but isn't there a crash safety thing also....aren't SUV's better for passenger safety? I always assumed that's why people bought them?
Thanks Pezz!! I used to own a 335d Touring actually, very much the same thing! SUVs aren’t actually any safer than a similar sized estate, plus a lot worse for anything else they hit!
I have a 335d Touring that I bought new 5 years or so ago. Now has 80k on it and it's as good as the day I drove it away from the show room. Effortless performance in every gear and economical. It and the new M340d are brilliant cars. I tried an M440i and it's great but not as effortless and drinks petrol in comparison. Obviously the Touring has the space and is a bit of a "sleeper" which surprises the life out of "Corsa Boy" 😂😂. So I'm struggling to justify changing it! I guess the Alpina B3 Touring is the ultimate, but much more expensive to buy. It has the same 700Nm of torque but 462 bhp. Great vid on TH-cam where Mr Alpina presentscand drives one. Looks awesome in Alpina green. But value for money and thrills per £ has to be the M340d.
I'm sure I asked/messaged the site once and asked if you could let me change the model or spec of the car and was advised no? They said you could add extras/options only?

@@ieditedmyname289 when you go in for your scheduled service and the bill is never less than £2000..........gearbox, satnav, xDrive, take your pick. BMW dealers screw you and the independents can’t get parts until it is 5/6 years old. This has nothing to do with good maintenance, they are engineered to break as soon as they are out of warranty / 60k plus miles.
If you google you’ll see it’s not. They’ve been running over 20 years. They have lawyers and auditors that oversee the competitions. Lots of information about them online.

For vertically challenged people yes, sadly with my 189cm I feel very claustrophobic in 3 series so need to go 5series to feel relatively at home.
I agree, fast economical, with a big boot. If you wait 3 years you could probably pick this up for 25k

It is now 3 years later. The M340d holds it's value. 45k GBP at the moment (BMW Premium Selection, 70k km, pre-LCI)

ive had my 335d for 6 years and its hasnt missed a heartbeat, not a single issue in over 150,000 miles
