I discovered this era of Tyner, Fortune and Mouzon when I DJ'd at my college radio station (KSMC). I had always been a jazz fan, but this music from McCoy Tyner showed me that jazz towered above the best progressive rock artists of the 1960s and 70s and the distance was not even close.
RIP, McCoy. You were the perfect balance to fusion, and pretty much the end of my listening to rock. Intense, and yet, acoustic. Demanding. You gave your drummers such a work out. I always liked that.
Man, love those Psychedelic colors, lighting, clothes and of course the great music. Alphose Mouzon's groove/swing driving this joint to the next level, bass player Calvin Hill great too and Sonny and McCoy soaring over it all.
Santamaria... Alphonso is a real drum's killer, he can easily overdo, his energy is not normal. What a great musician he is, hey !!! well, the whole quartet is "outstanding", bravoooooooaaaaah !!! 1971 ??? goddamn, that's real avant-guard, hey ! lovely, this is orgasmic music, all god's music.
This is some of the most artistic music i have ever heard, Alphonse Mouson's Drumming is second too none, combined with Tyner this band is on the level of Weather Report and Brand X and Mahavishnu.. Four Exceptional musicians..!
dolphytone I was blessed to see the great Sonny Fortune for the 2nd time- last month at the 34th annual jazz festival in Savannah, Ga. He remains a live inspiration & serious listeners of the music know indeed who he is.
Don't know Sonny and Calvin, but I'm now a fan. McCoy is a monster as always, one of the greats, and Mouzon shows off his space alien DNA, drumming like a MoFo.
Thanks a million alphonse. You played your butt off on this video and still do. Spoke to you quite a bit at the 2015 NAMM Show Canopus artist dinner in Anaheim.

MOUZON at 1:06 misses his cymbal. when I saw him in early 72 he must have dropped a stick every few minutes, but it didnt affect the flow whatsoever. Some of the greatest drumming I ever heard.
Amazing that there was a time when this calibre of music was actually shown on television. Nothing like this is ever aired today.
Fully agree….thankful for these old videos

RIP Alphonse Mouzon. A total master. This music is visionary and timeless. Tyner is a genius.
True words-Classical musician really
R.I.P. McCoy Tyner - you are one of a kind. Ever since I started listening to Coltrane, it was your playing that captivated me the most.
👏🏾👏🏾
Mr. Carter, I get a kick out of seeing your comments on dozens of videos throughout the years. Blessings and thank you sir.
These were the hungry years of McCoy. His music was forging ahead with passion and innovation.
They don't make 'em like this anymore. Man Oh Man!!!!
So bloody modern, extraordinay music performed by exraordinary musicians. It leaves me astonished that in 1971 the public is still all black !
Quelle époque bénie ou,comme l’a été souligné dans un commentaire,on passait cette musique à la 📺 !!!
Quelle énergie ils dégagent !!
Alphonse tearing it up on some WMP Rogers drums! Rest in peace my friend.
This is the group that led to my immersion in "jazz music" back in 1971. Beautiful, soulful, deep & fiery.MCCoy, Sonny, Alphonse & Calvin Hill.
Amazing! Aww man. I think of all of Tyner's performances we never got to hear.

McCoy was into his whole tone scales and progressions back then.
Oh man, to find the McCoy Tyner quartet from 1971, wow! Many thanks!
brother McCoy giving up the peace and joy !!!
Sonny Fortune is from Philly and played with Miles Davis. Calvin Hill played later with Max Roach when Billy Harper was in the band.
