Charlie didn’t pull away because he knew how much Patrick was hurting, he knew that Patrick knew that Charlie wasn’t gay, but he also knew that Patrick needed that kiss because he was in pain.

I think the reason why is because they kiss multiple times in the books, some like this scene, but others because charlie doesn’t really care and they’re partying and just having fun, and charlie also says that as a kid he would kiss another boy in his neighborhood from time to time so it doesnt really bother him. I was saddened by this scene in the book. Charlie essentially let's his friend kiss him here AND on multiple other occasions just because he's sad. He refuses to set any boundaries. It's so tragic. And everyone is talking about how great Charlie is for doing it. NO! He's not a good person for doing this. He's a weak person for not setting boundaries for Patrick and telling him to move on from his boyfriend. I would never just let my friends do something uncomfortable to me. I value myself a little more than that.

Just like the character, I was sexually abused as a child by someone who was older than me and he would always make it seem like an innocent game that we'd do and so I would just do what he'd tell me or do what he wants, thinking it's alright and it became a struggle for me to set boundaries because I would think it's not a big deal.
