"Sherlock Holmes Chapter One presents an interesting set of mysteries to solve, but its open-world setting doesn't really elevate its familiar investigation gameplay to a substantial enough degree, and its combat sections are uniformly dull and repetitive. There are certainly bursts of satisfaction to be earned when you get on a roll with an inquiry, but too often the vague case criteria can cause your sleuthing to stall and force you to fall back on guesswork, while the annoyingly unhelpful advice from Jon only makes these moments feel all the more frustrating. Sherlock Holmes Chapter One is a decent detective game set in an open-world that's a bit too elementary."

Why no mention of the fact that players who want to do only the detective stuff in the game have the option to turn off combat in the game's options?
They probabyl didn't notice. IGN hasn't been doing decent journalism in ages.
IGN has probably the best journalism in the past year or so. They have new talents on and they are doing better than many contemporaries like GameSpot.

Can't help thinking that all the money spent on that massive, beautiful but completely pointless open world could've been far better spent on just making Crimes & Punishments again but longer

gotta say there's a lot more easter eggs than i'd have expected, "jon has wares if you have coin" in the dress shop between knights rd and trinity way, pranking her is also fun. In fact without the convos with jon, this would have got a 4
My biggest problem occurred on the second case
You don't clearly get who the murderer was, and it's up to you who goes to jail
The older games were like that though
This review isn't far from truth, but seems like you guys have analyzed everything in the game except the case solving and narrative, that, well, are the main part of the experience. A 7 is a much more true vote

They explain it through out A mother's love, which is the main questline for the game. It makes a lot of sense when you learn his story

Look, this is a budget game. The game and the season pass is the same as a regular game. If you enjoyed Crimes & Punishments and Devil’s Daughter, then you’ll like this.
Authors of this and the latest TV series don't understand that AC Doyle's canon is NOT all Holmes all the time. Majority of time the books and stories do not feature him at all. The real heroes of the original works are the grotesque stories.
Which Holmes books do not feature Holmes “at all”?
@@LiamPorterFilms badly phrased, I'm not a native speaker. Biggest parts of many if not most of the stories are the setups and backstories, not actually spent with Holmes. In contrast, modern Holmes adaptations feature Holmes all the time. It's all Holmes, all the time.
Like Sherlock, I'd also ask "Are you talking?" if the lip-syncing was that bad.
LA Noire was ages ago and even other old games like Fallout 4 have better lip sync. This is a huge no no for games in 2020s.
Difference is, this is made by a small studio and not backed by a AAA budget.

Did you play the previous one? That thing was barely playable. The sinking city. at least combat seems a bit better than that. By the way my ps5 is overheating while playing this. Wtf

Honestly you start not to notice it.
What you do notice is that the sound in general isn't great, like people's voices sound like they are being spoken into a mic in your ear as opposed to coming from where their characters are in the cutscenes

And what was the game based on then, if the key element of the game according to your logic should be secondary like in Arkham games? This is a detective game, not an action game.
It's ironic that games about Sherlok Holmes treat the player like a child and never like a true detective. Return to the Obra Dinn is one of the very few games, that allow for complete player freedom.
...and is pretty damn inscrutable for many players for that very reason. It's an interesting conundrum: let players roleplay as a detective with superpowered mind, even when the player is anything but.
No this game does not treat you like a child, especially if you up the detective difficulty in settings.

Absolute garbage. They take a masterpiece detective game that takes place in the mid 18th century and turn it into a 1930's mafia style / just cause shooter? what the hell were they thinking? This game deserves to get review bombed.
