if anyone was wondering about the thickness of the extra folded device, assuming a base thickness of 0.2 mm, after 5 folds it would reach 6.2 mm thickness, less than an iphone x!

    • @JontyLevine
      @JontyLevine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

That almost makes it sound like it might be relatively easy to do. But then you realise that if it’s going to have any strength at all in its unfolded state, most of that 0.2mm would have to be a strong outer shell to prevent it from snapping or deforming, which would have the additional constraint of being transparent, and not being damaged by excessive folding.
But it also can’t be so strong as to pierce the user’s skin, especially around the edges, otherwise it might literally become a piece of cutting edge technology. It may be done someday, but certainly not in our lifetimes.

@@JontyLevine That's a bit grin prognosis. It's certainly not in the immediate horizon, but technology is advancing fast. Do you think people in the sixties believed we'd walking with hyper-powerful computers in our pockets nowadays? I think technology like this could become feasible in something like fourty to fifty years, well within our lifetimes.

    • @JontyLevine

@@Dragonfree97 It would still need to be able to detect radio waves, filter out the zeroes and ones from the noise, uncompress the video signal and send it to every pixel in the screen, not to mention filtering out the signals in all its touch sensors (because these too contain noise), encoding them into radio waves and sending them back to the server. If your smart device is smart enough to do all that by itself, then it may as well have its own operating system and memory. So we don’t need to worry about slimming down the actual 'computer' part of a computer, because… it’s actually not the biggest and bulkiest part of a computer, or at least not anymore. That of course would be the battery, most of which is used to power the screen, and is not likely to get smaller any time soon.

@@JontyLevine well , the key detail here is that the computer doesn't necessarly have to be all in one piece :
Telecommunication allows us to access cloud servers and then the same servers can do the calculation needed , the computer handled would be just a screen essentially , so that would be just specialization and essentially would allow these computer to have access and do much more calculation than modern desktop pc without overheating nearly as much , another tecnology that could allow them to work would be :
1)more energy efficient screens , maybe that don't generate glare and therefore can be a lot more dimmer ,
      2)solid state battery/SMES/graphene capacitors
3)wireless charging becoming so prolific that you can have one in your pocket and charge it from a bigger battery on yourself , or when in the house you just use much more powerful wireless chargers ...
In short , i think it's a fairly neat and elegant design that works for a soft sci-fi more focused on the slice of life / character ( kinda like "her" )
      4) maybe very small solar panels on it
And it's also halfway plausible ...

I have something like this in my own sci-fi world, which I call a Typer. Its basically a thin, relatively long metal rod which you usually tuck into your sleeve. You can pull out a flexible, transparent screen from this rod which extends to about 1.5 meters long, which can stiffen so it can be supported by its own weight. You can fold this rod to make something similar to a laptop, but you can also break off a piece of any size and make something similar in size to a smartphone instead, which you can reattach without any issue. The rod also functions as a projector and can attach itself to most surfaces.
People often have attachments like physical keyboards, because they still prefer that style of typing.

Totally within the foreseeable future. We can get OLED and LCDs onto a foldable surface.
Problem is that most materials, even those easy to fold, end up creasing, and very quickly their integrity at regular folding points begins to weaken. So we can totally make this today out of a OLED placed onto a large paper-like surface. But it would be very expensive, and have to be replaced rather quickly, before which a noticeable line would form on the display.

Maybe we don't need adevice that's never worn down by folding: what about a base that's foldable, not by it's material properties, but because of structure and smart engineering, imagine it made out of thosands of little tri-dimentional triangularhinges, imagine 3D-printed cloth, the OLED's arranged in the middle, in a way that's made so that none ever get crushed or interfeere with the base's foldability, and an outer, protective, very cheap, probably bio-degradable, or reusable, ironable, or somehow eco-friendly sheet that's the one to recieve the damage from the folding, It's repairing could be as easy as dismounting it from the device and ironing it with a piece of velum paper.

Thinking of a traditional mexican toy called "carterita magica" I thought you could have it be configured to many different types of folding, maybe folding it by 70 degrees every third of it's lenght could have you use it as a triple screen, and making a smart fold by the spot that'd be used as the base could have it not only as a base, but also as a keyboard, or a port. I imagine every one of these devices could have it's port, a small square which's thickness is minor to that of the fully folded device with the most common kinds of ports in it (about 2 or 3), so you could plug it onto an electrical source, or onto an accesory: a small mouse that countains a folded keyboard inside (you may be able to use both accesories wirelessly, or retrieve a cable from the inside of these and plug them into your device that way). Maybe if you're super extra or have a lot of people you can connect them together to make a huge screen.
Now that I think of it: the true device could be just the rigid "port", then the screen part could be easily replaced, clamping the port to the new screen, that's where stuff like the camera or the microphone and speaker could be.
The port doesn't even have to be that thick, this is sci-fi, it could simply be as thick as a strip of bubblegum, and be as resistant as a black box.
Extra notes: Wireless headphones could have the advantage of strapping around your ears, with this liberty the earnobs could be flexible, so you could choose if to have them in your ears of just outside, full headphones could just be pinned to your hair, and if you're bald... I don't know, anti-slip straps?, suction cups?

I don't know if it this can help develop more the idea for your future computers but from what i remeber paper can only be folded a certain amount of times(about 7) before requiring huge amount of energy to do it. Also in our world paper is cut using the golden ratio so maybe even in your futuristic world the various devices that you can make out of one piece of "screen" follow always a certain ratio and proportions.

I don't see a world where we can fit the computer into that flat of a volume, but I definitely think it's more possible to have the paper screen be more of a projection of the computer rather than the computer itself, and perhaps the processors are in the person's pocket or if it's connected to the cloud or something.

How about this, that machine you described but this way: it is the size of a cell phone (or a bit smaller) and it can fold out progressively to about the size of a laptop. You can write on it/interact with it etc, but the real power comes from a holographic interface. The machine can project its visuals and UI into space and you can interact with it in midair. It can stay cell phone size and you can project a big screen from it, or use it like a laptop. Or you can unfold it to the larger size and do the same thing. A special function can be an arm attachment, gauntlet-like, so that you can use the computer from controls (including holographic projections) from that gauntlet, so you wouldn't have to carry about the actual computer, if you didn't want to. That's my dream.

Could you buy models with different specs? Would that effect the thickness of the device at all or the way it folds? How would people deal with trying to change from a big screen to a phone if they get a call or have to go somewhere quickly. Is there a quick fold option or some other way to compact it with out have to go through the steps to fold it all the way? I have my own solution to these problems that I have come up with I’m my own version of this tech but if you ever make a sequel or another video on this I would love to see what you come up with!

yeah we actually aren't far away from something like this on at least a smaller scale. I don't think we'll have phones that can unfold into the size of a TV anytime soon, but I think we could easily have phones that unfold into laptops within the next few years. Sure there's stuff like the Galaxy Fold but that just unfolds once into a weird square thing that still isn't even as big as most tablets. But there are some prototype Tri-Fold designs I've had my eyes on for a bit now that I really like.
With a Tri-Fold design, you could take a 6x3 inch phone and unfold it into a 6x9 inch tablet, which is actually almost as big as like an ipad for example, while still keeping the folded up form small enough to fit in your pocket easy. Combine that with a case/cover that has one of those built in keyboards and now you have a laptop as well. Or hell if you wanna keep everything all in one, fold up one segment that becomes a 6x3 inch keyboard while the rest is propped up with a kickstand or something to make a 6x6 inch screen.
And honestly, those are the only real modes I'd want from a device like this. I don't really need to be able to pick up and carry my TV around, and there will always be a use for Desktop computers of course. But if I could have a phone, tablet, and laptop all in one device I would be golden lol.
