hey guys, first of all thank you for watching this video. something that I want EVERYONE to take away from this is that this isn’t about just ”loving yourself”, that’s a very easy thing to say when you aren’t in the other person’s shoes. We don’t know what people go through daily and or hear daily to see themselves as less than. Instead of ONLY pointing the finger at the person, let’s continue to challenge our traditional media, our entertainment industry, the people on social media who perpetuate negative images of being dark. Let’s challenge people who continuously use their platforms to degrade being dark while uplifting those that are light/mixed. A lot of people TRULY are in this fight alone, and don’t have people in their corner telling them they are beautiful which is why they subject themselves to this. Everyone needs a bit of positive reinforcement at times. Even me! Obviously there are people out there who truly just hate themselves and there are different unique cases, but I just thought I would reiterate this.

I'm Asian, and i'm light skinned. Some of my classmates in school always asks me "Ugh, i want to be light skinned like you, how do you stay pale/light , and don't tan?" and i always reply with "just don't go out enough, so that's why i don't tan." And after watching this now i regret saying that instead of encouraging them to embrace their skin cause they still look beautiful no matter what skin color they have. Definitely not gonna repeat that again.

I'm light skinned too but I experience the exact opposite thing with my friends at school - "Why are you so light?Your skin looks like snow lol". I don't really mind it but it's funny to think about how different cultures are. I come from a sunny European country so I guess it's normal to be a little more on the tanned side. But if you look a bit too tanned for the standard they poke fun at you, thankfully not constantly, but you're probably going to hear people make comments about your skin.

i'm a light asian too and ngl, i always wanted to be darker
mostly because sometimes i feel like asian isn't cute (it honestly is, but i just put myself down for things i shouldn't)
i live with my "dad" who's black...not really my dad but he and my mom were together when i was born
my mom is asian and mostly isn't able to care for me and my 2 other brothers she actually had with my dad
maybe i want to be darker so people don't call me white or ask if i'm adopted 😞

Sapphire Mae I agree with what @momo bb did said. Embrace your skin and your story. You don’t gotta explain anything to anyone as long as you know who you are. And acknowledging colorism shouldn’t make anyone want to be “dark skin”, I know that’s not what you’re doing, but you can embrace your light complexion and still uplift those with a darker complexion, ain’t nothing wrong with that. Be you and be happy with you. Embracing yourself and your story is hard but it’s a journey worth starting.

As a south asian woman, skin bleaching has been pushed on my since I was a kid. All the way when I was NINE, and I didn’t understand what colourism was, my mom would make me use Fair and Lovely (prominent skin bleaching product for south asians). She always discouraged me from playing outside in the sub. And my dad said things like “yellow and white clothes don’t look good on darker skin like yours”. I had to get educated to understand just how brainwashed our colonizers made us, by making us hate the colour of our own skin.

Same. I genuinely felt like my skin was "ugly" because it was darker than your typical white girl. I also used Fair and Lovely when I was a kid. I feel better about my skin now that I understand colonizers tried to suppress our gorgeous skin to make themselves seem superior. I'm not going to let that happen again.

I’m south asian, and the desire for lighter skin is such a big thing in our culture, and it’s so frustrating to see. People always see lighter skin as “beautiful” but then see darker skin as unnattractive, and it pisses me off so much. Even my own family does this, they always comment that I’ve gotten darker when I spend time outside and say that they wish my skin was as light as it was when I was younger... Never stop talking about this Jackie, this is such an important issue

I think one of the reason why asian prefer lighter skin is because getting darker, most of the time means you get additional wrinkles or freckles on your skin since not all asians are born with natural deep skin tone. But anyway that’s another type of evidence that culture needs to be changed and each and every one of us should embrace ourselves for who we are.
As a fellow asian I grew up being told light skin is beautiful most of the time by the media. I also was obsessed with having my light skin as long as possible, but I now much want to have dark skin after I got interested in american tv program and music industry that are driven by black people. I think people like me need to wake up and love the way we are born..

I've seen documentaries how bleaching skin is pushed in a lot of Asian countries. I'm super white, can't tan, and a lot of white people try to darken their skin. I've been called ugly for being so white. It's ironic. The beauty industry profits off of insecurities and putting people down.

Bruh. This video is so powerful. I was JUST talking about how a Nigerian company took my photos to advertise skin bleaching. And as a person that is so vocal about dark skin in international beauty (I use a lot of Asian products in particular so I hear a lot from those with darker skin in Asia) I was so offended. It was so weird and funny in a sad way. Also, I always thought that bleaching your skin makes you look like sausage casing. Not a look. Love your skin regardless.
    Edit: the top is fire!

    • @Annika9517
      @Annika9517 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@misstricksandtipps yeah fake tan is safer than bleaching. But really people don't use fake tan. They burn their skin. Which will bring them skin cancer in the long term. (When I go swimming I see so many people now that the sun is out, so unhealthy. tanned yes, but only by burning their skin to a crisp every single year the last 50 years.) Litterally more than half of the sun cream products at the drug store are tanning or bronzing. People who should stay out of the midday sun are using SPF4 bronzing cream and burn in the sun all day, then use bronzing after Sun, then buy shower gel that claims to not wash the tan away. In the time in which i decided which SPF 50+ to buy i saw 3 people buy "bronzing" shower gel and low SPF tanning sun cream.
It's the same sick mentality. I am really light skinned and have freckles. I litterally don't tan, only burn. And people tell me to go out in the sun to get a little tanned cause they think it's more beautiful.
(Thankfully the times of when freckles were mandated to be bleached away by people are over)
And I myself used skin lightening products before. It's ridiculous. When I studied abroad in Thailand it was litterally impossible to avoid, esp. Because i can't read Thai. It's in nearly every sun cream. In face cream in Soap. And so many Thai friends on facebook promoting these products.
It's sad honestly. No one is made happy with what they have.
The exactly same companies that want to sell me Tanning products in Europe, sell whitening products in Asia (and probably in other parts of the world too). And that is what is wrong with the world. Everyone is made to feel somehow inadequate by others and by companies that want to sell a solution to a problem that only exists in our heads.

This isn't just a problem with black women. It's an epidemic in several Asian countries too. I'm from India and I tan very easily. Everytime I meet my relatives they make sure to comment how much darker I look and why don't I do something about it. Thanks to Allah SWT though I'm much more comfortable with my skin than I used to be and I don't let their comments get to me. Casual body shaming and colour shaming is sadly very common in India.

I genuinely hate that women of color get put down and left out in the beauty community bc you're all so beautiful and your skin is beautiful. It's not something I always think about because I've always seen myself represented and can always find makeup in my color, so thank you Jackie for drawing attention to some things I don't know I would be aware of. All women, despite the color of their skin, are beautiful. and that's the facts.

When I worked at Sephora, there would be so many white women that came up to me saying my skin color was gorgeous and that they wished they had darker skin like me, that’s why they tanned. I would tell them “what if I told you your skin tone is more beautiful than mine, that’s why I want to bleach my skin.” They would get real quiet... I say this to say that we really shouldn’t let these “false beauty standards” dictate our perceptions. Jackie,
I came from one of those homes where hearing "You are beautiful, " was rare and didn't mean much. Where television shows and commercials showed me or influenced me what beauty was...I use to HATE my skin color and my natural hair. I would always ask why me God, why me....
When I met my partner, he introduced me to what it meant to be Black. We would watch documentaries and he really opened my eyes.
I was 22 years old...so prior to that I hated what GOD gave me. I always felt guys would and DID overlook me because I am dark skinned and I didnt have the "exotic" looks.
Blac Chyna endorsing bleaching and K. Michelle and others using whitening DISGUSTS me!
I constantly tell my children how beautiful their skin is and how lucky they are to have melanin.
In my son's school kids will try to insult him and put him down because of his dark beautiful skin. I tell him the joke is on them GOD blessed you with beautiful dark skin. You have people who ran and burn their skin just to try and achieve your beauty, so dont ever be ashamed of your beautiful dark skin.

Honestly, black girls have tought me to love my dark skin. I live in the Netherlands (white country), my ancestors came from India (what makes me Asian). My mom is extremely light skinned so everybody always tells me how beautiful my mom is, but they never say anything about me lol. I rarely see darker skinned Asian women, even here in Holland all the Asian girls they show on tv and in music videos are light skinned, and they definitely don’t uplift darker skinned girls like me (not a lot at least). So I’m so grateful that I get to see all these black women who keep uplifting each other and other darker skinned females. I know I’m not black and I don’t want to disrespect anyone, but I feel more ‘at home’ when I look at black women like Jackie or when I see Instagram accounts with black women, cause they’re more relatable to me. ❤️ So thank you so much Jackie!

Growing up as an Indian born in America, i had so many aunties and uncles talk about how light skin was more beautiful than dark skin. I even had an older lady tell me that the reason why the baby she was holding didn't want to come to me was because I was too dark and the baby was only used to seeing light skinned people! Because of this and many other occurrences in my childhood and young womanhood, i grew up thinking i was ugly because i was dark. I would avoid the sun like the plague for fear of getting darker. No one is born racist, but it is a culture that can be taught on very young minds. It's only a matter of time and with better people that ideology would be un-learned.

I SEE A LOT OF COMMENTS SIMPLIFYING THIS AS A “BEAUTY STANDARD” or equally harmful as a lighter skinned person being asked to tan ...It’s not equal , darker skinned people being told to be lighter is a direct result of Colonialism by Europeans. The creation of race was always meant to benefit those considered white . Not only does race effects economics but also every other part of human society including what is deemed beauty AKA your social currency.
Lighter skinned individuals feeling pushed to tan is not ok but it doesn’t effect their life the same way say a Black Latino , Black African or African American, or dark and black Asians.

This! I know it might seem like the same struggle but it’s really not. Being tan for white ppl just became a trend in the 70s and primarily just in America. But being darker skinned has been associated with being poor, dirty, ugly, and worthless for ages, worldwide. It’s deeply ingrained into our society that “white is right” and the closer you are the better. Just learn, like and share the message.

Yep. My fiance is from India where being fair is desirable. His extended family loves me BECAUSE I'm pale. His mother in law didn't want her son (fiance's dad) to marry my fiance's mom because she was too dark. That's the basis of whether you're good for men. I'm seen as a trophy because I'm light and that's fucked

when I was 15 I was considering skin bleaching because I grew up not liking my skin color. The Mexican culture really praises light skin girls- you see it all over TV shows, novelas, and even Miss Universe contestants. My nickname in my home is Canelita (Cinnamon) my mom and sister are really light skin compared to me. I am 21 and I am barely learning to love my brown skin. I still don't see brown skinned Mexican-American gals on TH-cam nor Instagram- Jenny 69 or Daisy Marquez are Hispanic but light skinned. That's why I follow black girls- y'all really taught me to love my skin I know it sounds weird but there's barely any brown skinned Influencers. I love how you're different! teaching young girls to love there skin is so IMPORTANT. I love this video! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

The struggle is real. My grandmother treated the dark skinned grandchildren differently than the light ones. I now have grandchildren of my own and encourage, nurture and love them the same. They are all mine and what skin color they have doesn't factor into it. That mess stopped with my kids. Btw, I have one light child and one super dark one. You better believe he knows his dark chocolate goodness is bomb and she knows her God given beauty doesn't come from the color of her skin. Being a dark chocolate woman is a blessing. All the haters are missing out. Bless their hearts.

    • @glenncoco8840
      @glenncoco8840 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I absolutely agree. I have a wheatish complexion and my cousin sister has a very fair complexion. We all live in a joint family and as a child I always noticed that my grandmother always favoured and praised my cousin telling her she looked like Katrina Kaif and she criticized me everyday, telling me I looked darker after coming back from school and that I should use home remedies to get fairer. She praised her in front of everyone else and never mentioned about me. It would hurt me a lot but I would never complain because I've always loved her no matter what. Now my grandmother is 89 years old. She stays in bed all the time owing to her weakness and every time I visit home I take care of her and my cousin stays at home all the time and still doesn't bother to even look at her. A person's complexion can never determine the person's character. I think karma is paying my grandmother back now.

CreativeMsKitty I totally agree with you, but be careful not to make your lighter skin child pay for the darker skin child. Example: I noticed you said he knows his dark chocolate goodness is bomb. But that her beauty doesn’t come from her skin. Why can’t both their skin be the bomb no matter how dark or light. Be careful not to make the same mistake your grandma made but only reversed.

C J I think she meant her beauty doesn’t (only) come from her skin, pertaining to the belief that if you’re fair skinned, then you’re automatically beautiful being perpetuated.

Sometime my bf and I talk about issues in society that have to do with women and he tells me that there are some things that he could never think of before talking with me or hearing my side of the story simply because he is not a woman and it's hard for him to see the world through the eyes of one.
I'm not a person of colour and I am watching your channel because you are fun and reliable but you have opened my eyes regarding issues which concern people of colour because no matter how hard I try I will never experience the world as one.
Just like in the discussions with my bf.
So you haven't just helped people of colour, you play an important role in helping society as a whole learn, understand and identify with you and people of colour on a personal level that was not possible before. Not that you need to hear this from me but you are doing great work that I too try to do myself (I work in the humanities sector). You should be proud regardless of who you've helped because you are are transparent and brave and you say things that you could get a hateful response. This inspires strength, integrity and honour that are not easily found today because you possess and project them. xx

I'm white and I love watching your videos and educating myself on stuff I don't usually think about. I've always been very opened about anything so I pretty much respect all cultures, religions and mentalities in general but this is also something that often leads to neglectance. It's great to have someone like you to point out minor and major differences in society that open people's eyes because as you've said many times before, you don't know it until you've gone through it... Respect!

I’m lighter then my little sister. And I saw growing up the way people would talk about her. Like, they would say to me shit like, “Oh, that color looks lovely on you but maybe you should get something else for your sister. It makes her look darker.” She is 10 years younger then me. She internalized that shit. Other POC made her feel like shit because she is darker then average Indian while I was lighter. It was devastating to her growing up. I have called out more then one Auntie who is saying this shit to her. She is my world. I don’t want your fake ass compliments if it comes at the expense of a darker skinned girl. Keep that racist/colorist shit to yourself.

I am latina and i am not dark skinned but i can relate to feeling unhappy with my skin color. As a 7-8 year old girl i was the darkest in my little group of friends (all light skinned kids) and I clearly remember one of my friends mom mentioned how white and beautiful her daughters legs and knees were and how “dark” mine were. I went home and cried all night. Next day in the shower I took one of those really harsh aluminum scrubs for pots/pans and scrubbed my knees until they bled.. my mom found me in the bathroom and I explained to her why i felt so ugly. Needless to say my mom handled that lady but I’ll never forget how horrible I felt because I was tan and my friends were white. I was seen as ugly and dirty. Thank god i grew up and realized how Ridiculous that is.

When I was a young girl, my grandma used to tell me and my twin sister we were ugly because we were dark like our dad and we need to stay out of the sun and beach our skin like Michael Jackson. We had cousins that were very light skinned, and they were always praised and were gifted the nicest and most abundant gifts. As a teen, I felt ugly, hated myself, even tried using several shades lighter foundation because of my grandma’s disgust with our skin tone . Now, as an adult, I feel very blessed to be a semi- dark skinned Latina! I know I will NEVER EVER know the struggles of darker skinned people, but I do know what it feels like to be mistreated by someone because of the color of the skin. Thank you Jackie for being a proud and confident melanin woman. Our youth needs more people like you! God Bless you! 🙏🏼✌🏽💛
