Here's a general rule of thumb I live by. If the company and my team are good, provide positive reinforcement, and being at work genuinely feels like I'm working among my friends and family (no, I don't mean the whole BS "we're like a family company" companies. I mean the ones where I feel that way. I hate the ones that tell you to feel like that. It's so manipulative), then yeah, I'll throw in some extra hours to earn more cash because I enjoy it. On the other hand, if the company is mismanaged, the atmosphere is toxic or borderline toxic, and it feels like I'm constantly working with adversaries looking to stab me in the back and they're constantly tracking every minute of my day, then the answer to working overtime is a resounding no. I don't care if it's time and a half, double time, or even triple time. If I hate being there except for making a paycheck, I simply won't do it TLDR: I rarely work overtime and I'm shameless about it
Nobody works overtime because they want to improve their mental health or productivity. It's mostly to catch up against poor management/organization for projects and earning more money in the short term. The real question is whether or not the earned money is worth it in terms of tax statements at the end of the year. And if the money is worth the extra work. Is it enough money?
