Just built a Fargo with an Alfine 8, belt drive, and drop bar setup. So far it works great! I tried a flat bar, but the reach was so short that it hurt my back.
At first i thought it was a new bike , i diddent know you could swap out a chain drive system for a belt drive system. Good one , i seem to go through chains quite regularly as we have sand on our cycle paths . Thanks for the info . Looking foward to hearing to 1000km review. Matt
Thru-axle Rohloff available (with 'special' adapter) per www.rohloff.de/en/products/speedhub/speedhub-variations. If one can be had for a good price as QR, I say go for it but a new purchase (at least for me) will be 148 boost with disc brake machining. Love the purple - mine is tiger beetle green/blue and I like it too.
"Bike porn" - even the music at the beginning would fit 😅 GREAT GOODS! I would also add a SON hub dynamo, Edelux 2 front lamp and SON Rear Light to the set. The fenders wouldn't hurt either;) Greetings from Poland!
Awesome bike, esp. with the Rohloff and Gates carbon belt drive. I waited too long to buy a Fargo on Craigslist. Woman rode it only a few times for training and then a race. $700 for a like-new Fargo, probably the same year as yours because it was the same color, was a steal. Still kicking myself for losing that one. Again, awesome bike. 👍
I just bought a 2013 salsa Fargo 2, love it.... but trying to get it as comfortable as possible... selle anatomica seat helps a lot. I’m looking at getting some handlebars that will allow me to sit up in a comfortable position and ride for long rides... but love aero bars as they make a huge difference when to be to aerodynamic
Hey Brad where did you purchase those accessories sitting on your handle bar where the bell sits on & above that level also. what do you call those accessory bits? thanks Kent
Hey! This is awesome! I'm trying to build my own Rohloff IGH combo but I'll be running a 45.5 belt line. I noticed you've got a 46t(?) chainring on this and was wondering if you think you could fit a 39, or maybe even a 42 on the front with non boost spacing? Was wondering if you knew or could possibly space it out before I buy the parts and try to space it out in person?
You need the Gebla Rohbox gets rid of the twist shift. And the Gates iPhone app to get the belt tension correct. In practice they will run slacker than Gates recommend.
@@BradBeaird Hi Brad, yes, I switched my bike from the rotary Rohloff control which I thought was really awkward to the Gebla box. Cinq do one too. I can send you pictures, and I know all about fitting it. It's done maybe 3000 miles now and the whole setup has been completely reliable. I built the bike for long distance touring - on the road - not on trails. But I also use it every day here in Bristol, England. it's possible here of course to put the bike on the train for longer distance trips - because there are trains and travel everywhere without using a motor vehicle. I'm not sure though how to attach pictures - I rarely use TH-cam
I've got a Fargo with gates drive and Rohloff. Only just got it set up. Have you played with the belt tension at all Brad? I've read you can reduce the drag from the belt if you drop the tension, but I'm reluctant to try it in case I mess it up.
I would love to do a similar rohloff + gates conversion on my 2019 Fargo. What direct mount to 104 bcd spider are you running on your truvativ cranks? Thanks!
Brad Beaird thank you but I found your video on Moloko and I think that one will work better for what I need , by the way I just picked up a 2020 Fx3 disc that I’m building up to do multiple MS rides so you’re videos have been very helpful !!! Thank you.
This bike would have been better with an eccentric bottom bracket rather than the horizontal (sliding) bottom bracket to handle chain/belt tension. On this bike, if you remove the rear wheel to fix a puncture, you will need to re-tension the belt drive correctly when you replace the wheel. With an EBB this would not be a concern.
Yeah I think it’s a bit overstated perhaps, but you kind of get a “feel” for it I think. There are a few people running them pretty loose (which isn’t recommended) to help with reducing resistance a bit (cyclingabout guy) but I don’t think I would try that just yet haha.
I believe there is an App from Gates that allows the user to hold the phone near the belt and you strum your belt like a guitar string. The App listens to the vibration and reveals proper tension. No first hand experience here .
How's the shifting working 4 years later on the Rohloff?
Still using it?
Was manually pausing pedaling enough to keep wear off the Rohloff?

I have a Thorn Raven Tour with a Rohloff Hub 13 Years riding and still going strong ;) the Gates drive wow
Rohloff seems to really be dependable.
That is one sweet touring bike.
It sure is!
Hi, very nice setup! May I ask you which spindle and spider you get on your RaceFace crankset to match the Rohloff Beltline ?

As time goes on we will do some reviews on how it’s working.

I wonder how well that cane creek thudbuster works.
Interesting and useful info 👍👍👍 great set up I’d never though of a how the belt goes on . 🤔 food for thought I’d love to run a similar set up
Glad it was helpful!

What length belt did you go for for the 20t and 46t combo? Assuming you have a medium?
It is a medium frame and the Gates Belt part # is 11M-115T-12 CTS in Black :)

I've got a Selle Anatomica on my ECR now and so far I like it fairly well.
any long term feedback on this bike? I’m looking to possibly get a Fargo/Rohloff for a commuter/bikepacker.
Long term feedback is it has been great. No real issues, just one oil change on the Rohloff. Otherwise, has been a really nice and reliable setup.
I’m working in Liberty MO today from out of town and I recognized the snow 👍🏻
Yeah man, I’m ready to see it gone!

That's a handlebar extension purchased on amazon. Here's a link: amzn.to/2zTDi8u with a bell and a cell phone holder like this: amzn.to/2VVUPFC

Where is the frame split to fit the belt.?
at the alternator drop out where Salsa has the frame split on the Fargo
How much $$$$ was the total set-up again? Any other colors besides the hideous purple?
How you get belt through frame?
Fargo has a frame split at the alternator drop out
Great setup!
I just purchased 2020 Salsa Fargo
Apex 1 and will be ordering Rohloff/Gates components myself. What year Fargo is yours?
It's a 2018 Fargo in purple :)

Gebla Rohbox looks interesting. Are you or anyone you know using it currently?

Belt tension was setup by the LBS and hasn’t really been changed. I would be like you and afraid I would mess it up.
How many teeth are on the chain ring, or belt ring, at the front?
It’s a CDx-exp 46 sprocket with a 20 tooth rear sprocket
Hows it all running 8months on?? About to pull the pin on the same setup! Thanks for the video!
Running great. Loves it!

Velo Orange Crazy Bars
What size sprockets are you running on the wheel and the crank?

Which crankset (brand size etc) and which belt/ratio did you use!? Is that cdx:exp?

@@sebxsebt Just the stock cranks that came with the bike.

Sorry if you have covered this before but what brand and model handle bars are on that bike they look amazing!!!!

True. But really the tensioning is pretty easy.

yup was hardcore on getting a cutthroat until I discovered the fargo!
Love the porn music at the start lol! It sums it up for me.
Oh yeah. Bike porn, lolol
The Fargo is so practical but she’s certainly not a looker.
