"Don't tell him Pike", and "Four Candles" - two seemingly innocuous phrases that signify so much to so many people. They encapsulate a very special era in the hearts of many Brits!
My Dad actually met Philip Madoc and said he was so approachable and laughed everything off and was so charming. He even laughed about this scene and said "I've been all over the world, in theatres, productions and broadway musicals. And what am I remembered for "Don't tell him, Pike!" He loved every minute of it.
Have just heard the sad news of the death of Ian Lavender - a long and varied career followed the "Iconic" Dad's Army but surely "Don't Tell Him, Pike" will be laughed at in a hundred years time. Condolences to Ian's family, friends and the countless millions who still watch TODAY, one of the greatest written & cast comedy's EVER.....RIP Ian
RIP Ian, the last of Dad's Army gone. Fond memories of this clip and we all used to repeat our favourite lines from Dad's Army the next day in the school playground.
This clip of a truly classic scene from Dad’s Army shows exactly why decades after it was made, Dad’s Army still ranks at or near the top of British comedy and why it is still being shown on tv today. Sadly, all the main cast members except for Ian Lavender, who played Private Pike, have now passed on but their characters still live on and will always live on in the 80 episodes that were made and they will always have a place in the hearts of the British people and be remembered very fondly and with great affection indeed. Dad’s Army, along with Fawlty Towers and Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister, still remains for me as one of the 3 best comedy programmes ever made and will always stay for me in the highest possible rank of comedy programmes.
still only bettered by only fools and horses after all these years, i did like allo allo as well though which has just come up in the recommended videos to the side of this comment and reminded me
Ian lavender aka private pike passes today, so now all of the stars of dads army have passed RIP to them all May we never forget the laughs they gave us all
We will never see the likes of these actors again. Modern comedy and I use the word comedy loosly will not be thought of this fondly in 50 years time. Dads Army comedy gold!
Absolutely one of the best original English comedies. Amazing comedic performances all round...timing... and Lowes reaction right at the end... brilliant and timeless
Fun fact Pike was trying to hold in a laugh. Also I love this quote too "Uncle Arthur? If you don't let me on the bunk I'll tell Mum." "Stupid drummer boy."
My favourite programme celebrates its 50th birthday. God bless all the elements that made this programme so successful. RIP to Jimmy Perry and David Croft and all the legendary cast members who made this major success possible. May Frank Williams, Ian Lavender and Harold Snoad live very long lives.
Absolutely brilliant episode & this clip was the best, but I also loved the bit where Manwaring offered to buy them fish & chips. The German Captain then insisted he didn’t want cod, but plaice & that his chips be golden brown & crisp, not nasty soggy chips. The whole hilarious farce of the enemy behaving like a hotel guest was comedy gold.😀
This never gets old with me, Philip Madoc was Hilarious as the U Boat Kapitan along with Ian lavander as Don't tell him Pike, Arthur lowe was Legendary in this Hilarious scene 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Deeply sad news to hear the passing of The last surviving member of warmingon on sea home guard Ian Lavender young pike has passed away on the 5/3/2024 I can just imagine as he gets to the pearly gates and ST Peter asks him his name Captain mainwarning will shout out DON’T TELL HIM PIKE.
“Led by a lunatic who looks like Charlie Chaplin” That is so true. Chaplin had the same moustache as Hitler. Pity that so many fictional characters these days are loosing their toothbrush moustaches, e.g. Dennis The Menace’s Dad. After all, Chaplin had one and he was not evil at all. So did Oliver Hardy. Oliver Hardy was funny.

Great to hear a fellow youth is a fan of the old comedies, I'm 21 now and hardly anyone in my age group is aware of these classic British comedies. One time when I was at College one of my teachers made a Monty Python reference in his lesson and I started laughing when he did (and my teacher started laughing too) and everybody else in class was dead silent (I later joked with my Mum that it looked like it was a private joke between my teacher and I since none of my classmates got the reference).
Dad's Army was a classic, brilliantly written and brilliantly acted, it's so sad that they are no longer with us Rest In Peace , thank you for all the laughs
If you look closely at Philip Madoc when he's saying "Your name will also go on the list..." you can see that he's trying really hard NOT to burst out laughing! Same goes for Ian Lavender after it cuts back to him following the "Don't tell him Pike!" line - it actually looks like Ian is biting the inside of his mouth to stop himself corpsing.
I can see the German captain smiling as he spoke after Pike finished his silly song. Even the German captain thought the song was funny. I'm 20 years old and I just started watching 'Dad's Army', it's so good!
What can you say that has not already been said. Possibly the greatest and most beloved show ever screened by the BBC. No modern comedy can touch it 😅😅❤️
That was very entertaining. I watched that 1973 episode, on Saturday 11th January 2020, at 7:30pm (GMT) on BBC2, on the television. I remember as a family watching "Dad's Army" a long time ago. That joke cracks me up!

Seconded possibly the greatest Ensemble Cast in any British Comedy Show..

Sad news.
Perfect, it’s simply perfect 👌 My Grandfather watched Dad’s Army, as did my Dad and myself and I’m sure my kids will soon be watching it 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
RIP Ian, he was a legend, now the magnificent seven are reunited. With likes of Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier( Uncle Arthur). You stupid boy.
Possibly one of the best lines in British comedy history....... Rest in peace 🕊️ Ian Lavender.
Just heard the sad news of the passing Ian Lavender (Private Pike) Friday February 2nd 2024
