    You should read more about HMB (Host Memory Buffer). When attaching an SS 980 directly to the mainboard, the speed will reach the specifications. In the case of attaching it via Thunderbolt, the HMB cache will not work and the speed will not reach the specifications.

    Great stuff, i was looking at buying the 980 as the specs were good enough and a saving in money is always welcome, but the980 pro seems to spank the test so I will have to pony up the extra money.

    I have ordered the Acacias Thunderbolt Enclosure, But I still haven't decided the ssd. For Basis tasks and little bit of 4k footage editing and some Adobe apps for Mac, Which SSD do you prefer. I am planning to use this as my boot drive. Lovely Video!

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the editing, either of these two would be fine in my opinion. The SSD 980 Pro is undoubtedly the one to go for if...
      1. Your laptop supports Thunderbolt or USB4.0
      2. You shift very large files around (e.g. 4K ProRes or RAW video)
      You mention that you're going to use this as a boot drive? Is it wise to use an external drive as a boot drive? Is it even possible?

    I really hate how these drives can be completely different yet keep the same model. It would be like a video card being twice as fast with the same model number just stick some letters behind it. I bought the 980 18 months ago, saw the 990 pro came out was said wow twice as fast! Then I said oh... 980 pro is actually 7k MB/s as well... and its 80 dollars cheaper for the same capacity.

    980 pro is the way to go theyre well worth the money I have like 6 2tb now ive used them since they came out. i plot chia with a couple of them too and people always say how chia plotting will kill regular nvme ssds but I have plotted enough to fill the 30 18tb hard drives i have and plotting all those the 980 pro that did almost all the plotting still has 41% life left. Also with testing if you use crystal disk mark and choose the performance profile you'll get a more accurate view of the max speed of these through TB4. I have TB4 and that same enclosure and I know that the 980 pro can read and write a lot faster than that on that setup but you have to test with a program that lets you choose max performance test because it will vary a lot with other tests you have no idea how many threads or what size que that test program was testing at. Using 16 threads the 980 pro in that enclosure will run at just about full speed as if it were connected to a pcie 4x4 slot which is triple the speed yours was running at.

    Can you use two in raid for faster speeds by the way, would like to see that test.

    • @spacecadet2172
      @spacecadet2172 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since the bottleneck is essentially the TB bus, RAID would not really help, unless you had an expensive computer with two separate thunderbolt controller chips and made sure to plug them in on different busses. It also could speed up some operations like small random writes. But in terms of breaking the barrier of around 2.8GBps, not really.

    • @penskib1975
      @penskib1975 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spacecadet2172 that's what i mean two separate external thunderbolt enclosures on two thunderbolt cables. My accasis enclosure gets 3000 gbs read. So pleased with it.
      I suppose any more than that will expose other bottlenecks.

    • @spacecadet2172
      @spacecadet2172 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@penskib1975 it’s not about two cables. It all depends on the computer and how many thunderbolt controller chips and busses it has. The old Intel MacBook pros with 4 thunderbolt ports had 2 separate thunderbolt controllers, and if you plugged the drives into opposite sides of computer, you could get independent 40gbps thunderbolt busses. But computers with such a configuration are quite rare
