When I was a little boy, my Dad used to take his beagles to the local radio station's woods to run rabbits and I would find discarded 45s in the brush from time to time. This was one of them!
Wow the only version of this I have ever heard in the past was by Johnny Cash himself in a n album called Ballads of the True west, which seems to be fairly little known but is in my opinion one of his best
Wonder when this was recorded? It mentions Hinckley's assassination attempt on Reagan. I was thinking Johnny Cash had done this song on his TV show which I thought was in the 70's.
MERLE KILGORE: Well me and my brother walking by the station When we heard a shot ring out I asked a crying lady what's all the commotion She said Mister Garfield shot down Lord Lord She said Mister Garfield shot down HANK JR: Well the soldiers carried him to a big house Where he was tended by his doctors and his wife MERLE KILGORE: He said Lucretia honey now if I don't make it You can't pull a single harness all your life that's what he said You can't pull a single harness all your life ALL: Mister Garfield's been shot down shot down shot down Mister Garfield's been shot down low Mister Garfield's been shot down shot down shot down Mister Garfield's been shot down low MERLE KILGORE: Next morning me and brother went back up to the house We seen the flag a-flyin at half mast We asked a soldier boy is it true is he gone He said yes the President has passed Lord Lord Yes Mister Garfield has passed I said who is to blame What is the assassin's name That put Mister Garfield in the ground He said his name was Charlie Giteau HANK JR: I said Charlie Giteau done shot a good man down Lord Lord Charlie Giteau's done shot a good man down ALL: Mister Garfield's been shot down shot down shot down Mister Garfield's been shot down low Mister Garfield's been shot down shot down shot down Mister Garfield's been shot down low JOHNNY CASH: Now we want you to understand the moral of this song And what we've been talking about HANK JR: They killed the Kennedys Doctor King shot Reagan and the Pope And they all oughta be death row bound lord lord MERLE KILGORE: But they're still breathing air and walking ground ALL: Ought to be lined up and shot down shot down shot down Lined and up and shot down real low Ought to be lined up and shot down shot down shot down The same way they shot down other folks
Truer words never spoken as the ones at the end of this classic song.
Saw Hank Jr. in concert in the early 80's and Merle Kilgore opened for him (I had no idea who he was) He did this song and it was amazing.

Damn good song
My great grandfather was named Mr garfield
A non-LP single that charted at #54 on the Country Singles Chart in 1982.
Mr Garfield has been shot down LOL.
JK, great song though.
Wonder when this was recorded? It mentions Hinckley's assassination attempt on Reagan. I was thinking Johnny Cash had done this song on his TV show which I thought was in the 70's.
This particular recording dates back to 1982. The verse which Johnny Cash sang was added.
I think Johnny wrote it and recorded it on his Ballads of the True West double LP from the 60s.
@@chrisdecubellis3674 .....
Johnny Cash did not write
"Mister Garfield".
It was credited to
Ramblin' Jack Elliott.
This version was recorded and
released in 1981 and it peaked
in 1982 ..... Johnny Cash first
released it in 1965.
Does anyone know who's playing guitar in this recording?
MERLE KILGORE:
Well me and my brother walking by the station
When we heard a shot ring out
I asked a crying lady what's all the commotion
She said Mister Garfield shot down Lord Lord
She said Mister Garfield shot down
HANK JR:
Well the soldiers carried him to a big house
Where he was tended by his doctors and his wife
MERLE KILGORE:
He said Lucretia honey now if I don't make it
You can't pull a single harness all your life that's what he said
You can't pull a single harness all your life
ALL:
Mister Garfield's been shot down shot down shot down
Mister Garfield's been shot down low
Mister Garfield's been shot down shot down shot down
Mister Garfield's been shot down low
MERLE KILGORE:
Next morning me and brother went back up to the house
We seen the flag a-flyin at half mast
We asked a soldier boy is it true is he gone
He said yes the President has passed Lord Lord
Yes Mister Garfield has passed
I said who is to blame
What is the assassin's name
That put Mister Garfield in the ground
He said his name was Charlie Giteau
HANK JR:
I said Charlie Giteau done shot a good man down Lord Lord
Charlie Giteau's done shot a good man down
ALL:
Mister Garfield's been shot down shot down shot down
Mister Garfield's been shot down low
Mister Garfield's been shot down shot down shot down
Mister Garfield's been shot down low
JOHNNY CASH:
Now we want you to understand the moral of this song
And what we've been talking about
HANK JR:
They killed the Kennedys Doctor King shot Reagan and the Pope
And they all oughta be death row bound lord lord
MERLE KILGORE:
But they're still breathing air and walking ground
ALL:
Ought to be lined up and shot down shot down shot down
Lined and up and shot down real low
Ought to be lined up and shot down shot down shot down
The same way they shot down other folks
Sounds like the Polka version compared to the original Cash song.
This version by Merle Kilgore
with Hank, Jr. and Johnny Cash
is the better version.
