For me, Sex Pollen is just Bang or Die. My preferences are kinda particular though:
- The pollen should only amplify one or both parties' feelings, and after they fuck they should have angsty moments where each is not sure whether the other party fully consented to it, liked it, liked *them*, and both are afraid to communicate as to not damage their platonic relationship. Then, they would talk to some educated friends/mentors/aliens/whomever the fuck who inform them that the pollen wouldn't work if there's no feelings present. Then they'd have an epiphany or some shit and come back into each other's arms and fuck some more.
- Bang or Die should happen if the characters are supposed to obey some weird rules of an ancient kingdom or planet (klance fics come to mind), and/or if there is already a lot of tension between the characters, either romantically or as enemies, no in-between. Their romantic, pure feelings for each other (kinda unrealistic bc if you're not ace then you'd probably want to fuck your object of affection from the get-go but let a bitch dream lmao) would give way to intense sexual attraction that makes the Bang or Die thing turn into a good time. Then, there would be the awkward aftermath like the one I like for Sex Pollen.
- I also like for the characters to be enemies bc I truly believe that there's a thin line between love and hate. Like how despite not really liking each other as people, Harry and Draco are quite literally obsessed with each other and probably don't know that they're lusting after one another, with Harry complimenting Draco's looks multiple times and Draco driving his father mad with his Harry-related rants. When put in a Bang or Die situation, the characters' view of each other change as they fuck, and their hate for each other easily turns into curiosity and some other kinds of repressed emotions. There would probably a lot of snarky banter during the act and they would also fight for dominance (bc that's what enemies do regardless of circumstances), which makes everything even juicier.
- They're gonna have to learn how to interact with one another in a new way after this even if they decide to form a truce or continue to fight, and that will probably lead to some soul-searching and some shit about "wow wouldn't it be nice if i run my hand through their stupid hair hold on what the fuck". They're gonna try to hide the experience and their new form of ~tension~ from other characters, or they're gonna go through a shit ton of teasing from the characters which put them in more embarrassing and relationship-defining situations.

@@withcindy i just wanted to point out that there isn't always a more 'masculine' individual within same-gender relationships. this applies to both m/m and f/f relationships. assigning straight relationship expectations to same-gender relationships (ie that relationships must consist of feminine and masculine 'counterparts') can lead to harmful assumptions!

I kinda like it when the miscommunication comes out of the character’s insecurities. Like if someone is already established to be incredibly bad at accepting people care about him, then if the author wants to write him as completely oblivious to another person’s romantic advances on him because of this insecurity, then that is usually pretty good (however painful) to read. So basically keep things in character and not just “for the plot”

I will never forget the time on my 13th birthday my mother went to a bookstore that sold manga. She wasn't very familiar with it and went there looking for the legend of Zelda manga I always wanted but couldn't find it anywhere. She saw one book I dont remember the name of with 2 girls on the front cover. There was only 2 books (I think) so she got both (It looked like an obvious lesbian romance). Well I don't touch the book up until my teacher at the time started becoming more strict and instead of having free time after work, you had to read. So the first time I read this book was at school and what do you know, its hentai.
Wow. That is 1 legendary story. I used to read books during free time after school work was finished in class too, but my teachers would sometimes do a “stop&frisk” on what books we were reading. So I never could get away with anything smutty or violent.
My mom once gave me a small book she got from a magazine while my guy friend was over. I just opened a random page and started reading out loud right in front of my friend. Low and behold I read into a sex scene. It was an western genre erotic novel. 😂 Safe to say my mom didn’t give me another one of those women’s magazine books. 🥴
Let me tell the first I touched a physical yaoi manga. It was in the public library, they had a shelf for mangas and the bl section had like 30 something books that were yaoi. And I remember picking it up, let me tell you the time, it was 2014. I was in middle school and I took the book and started reading there on the hallway where people where walking past me, they’d stop and give me weRid looks. And I had to walk to the library bathroom to read the book. Omg the worst part is when I was checking out the manga, the front desk office women gave me a weRid look, never have I wanted to hide in a cave. Since than I’ve not gone to that section of the library, and I only read yaoi mangas online. Sigh

Hot take: The romance movies are introducing characters to you while using the clichés, which can get in the way of getting invested in them. Whereas with fanfiction you're already invested in the characters (and most likely the pairing) so you can fully enjoy the clichés and how they work with the characters.
Watch some kdramas, they're exactly like fanfictions sometimes and I love them lol

I know this comment is made a year ago, but definitely depends on the person. Younger people tend to see it more of "status" thing. I tend to like the dynamics between people and would still like the pairing if they were both girls or man/women (I am generally a bit hard pressed if they suddenly take a gay ship and make it straight though, depends on the execution). I'd say I hope the younger ones realize their mistakes one day and can just separate fiction from reality.
When I was young I did exclusively read gay fiction (a factor which was influenced due to finding sex between straight couples gross due to SA) but I did understood at the time that fictional characters shipping is different from actual life. I don't see harm in reading only gay pairings, but when you make it a personality thing or inconvenience real people it becomes a issue.

In general, I like enemies to lovers not because there’s hostility in the beginning but because the transition usually hinges on character growth - they learn either that they’ve judged someone too quickly, or that the reasons for which they instinctively judged/have been taught to judge someone are invalid (e.g. Matthias from Six of Crows)

@@strawberrynikolas As a lesbian, I tend to go for gay or lesbian romances because I find them more relatable and more interesting because you can have the added element of questioning your sexuality or worrying about homophobia, and because the romance is less likely to be just assumed(like how "boy meets girl" is shorthand for a romantic relationship) so the author has to actually write it well.
Confession: I'm asexual AND aromantic but I love reading relationship fics, especially ones employing the tropes: slow burn, false dating, mutual pining, and then they were roommates, and friends to lovers. I just skip over the smutty stuff and move on to where they wake up early to make each other tea because I want a friendship that's as intense as a relationship sans the kissy stuff thank you very much. Plus, the joy emanating from the characters is palpable and it's much harder to find purely friendship fics.

Not to be confused with pet play in BDSM which is another thing entirely (I think? I could be wrong, def they could overlap. Petplay often includes ears and tails+ but it's more a mental regression so I'm not sure it applies?) And yes, cartoon creations as you describe are also attributed to the furry but what I saw of a documentary once described it as in full-on animal body and head costuming. Typically the animal costume is cutesy and more like a cartoon, but I assume not always.

At its base being a furry is weather you love animals and weather consider yourself one or not. Theres plenty of people who draw anthropomorphic characters (a stereotypical furry attribute) yet dont consider themselves furries and vice vera. All in all its just a community of animal lovers who show their appreciation in a different way. ^-^

I have to admit that I have a guilty pleasure with AOB. I don't know how it works for english fanfics, but honestly, most of the spanish ones are like ✨ a r t ✨. so well written. I really appreciate the way the authors make them, you can see all the effort they put onto creating the worlds (not every aob ff is the same. like, there are some rules, but the writers manage to be original).

I really love Enemies to Lovers but when I say "enemies" I mean more bickering than hostility. I love it when characters initially clash over ideological differences but eventually change their world views as they get to know each other and fall in love.
