  • Take an island adventure and dive into some MALASADAS from Pokemon Sun and Moon! Feed this to anyone and their affection for you will quadruple... guaranteed ;)
    ---------------
    INGREDIENTS:
    Tools & Ingredients
    1 pack of active dry yeast
    1 teaspoon of white sugar
    ¼ cup of warm water
    6 eggs
    6 cups of all purpose flour
    1/2 cup of white sugar
    ¼ cup of melted butter
    1 cup of evaporated milk
    1 cup of water
    1 teaspoon of salt
    2 liters of vegetable oil
    2 cups of sugar
    ½ cup of powdered sugar
    3 cups of heavy whipping cream
    Step 1
    Dissolve the pack of yeast in the ¼ cup of warm water.
    Step 2
    Beat the eggs until the are thick and fluffy.
    Step 3
    Add the yeast, ½ cup of sugar, melted butter, milk, salt and the cup of water to the eggs and combine. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet mixing it well until a dough forms.
    Step 4
    Knead the dough on a floured surface. Place in an oiled bowl and cover to let rise until doubled in size.
    Step 5
    Punch out the air and knead the dough lightly. Roll out the dough til it's about a half inch thick and using a circular cookie cutter, cut circle shapes. Set these aside and covered and let them grow for another 30 minutes.
    Step 6
    Fry each piece of dough in cooking oil heated to 375 degree F. If the malasadas are flipping too much, use a wider utensil like a wooden spoon to hold it down on one side until browned, then cook it on the other.
    Step 7
    To make a super simple cream filling, we're going to be combining vanilla pudding and flavoring. Separate 3 cups of vanilla pudding into two containers. In the first part add ½ cup of strawberry jam or jelly and mix. In the second one add 1/2 teaspoon allspice, 1/2 teaspoon cardamom, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves and 1 teaspoon ground ginger, mix all together. For the sour malasada, combine lemon zest with lemon pudding.
    Step 8
    Add each of those pudding mixtures to a separate piping bag.
    Step 9
    Make a hole in the side of the doughnuts, and pipe each mixture into separate doughnuts until filled. Dip these in a bowl of powdered sugar to coat one side.

    I tried making this with my mom. She doesn't eat unhealthy stuff, but she made it this one time. We bought ready-made dough, and didn't mix any pudding, but we got vanilla, and lemon. Overall, it was a pretty good recipe, but the dough didn't fully cook so we microwaved, and they were a bit big to eat, but they tasted great! My mom thinks you guys are awesome. I subbed

    ^_^ Don't forget! These 'malasadas' are from the world of Pokemon! We here at Feast of Fiction are trying to recreate the look and style that the video game's version have- these are filled with cool flavorings to reflect the powerups they give your Pokemon. These treats came to Hawaii from Portugese laborers from the Madeira and Azores islands- the shops that have popped up in Hawaii are simply continuing this tasty island tradition, mahalo!
    The beauty of food is that every culture does it differently- and we're recreating the versions made in a fictional videogame. We'd love to know how you remember malasadas, and how your culture/upbringing celebrates the food!

    I kinda wish you guys mentioned something about malasadas in Hawaii, since that's what the ones in the game are based on (although i liked how you mentioned their Portuguese origins). Also, I feel like maybe you could've thrown in how the standard malasada doesn't have a filling. Idk I like malasadas and the beginning was a teeny tiny bit cringe-y for me, having grown up in Hawaii. I would have appreciated another sentence or two explaining malasadas esp since it's something that exists in real life. That said, this looks like a super awesome recipe and I love the filling ideas. Totally gonna try em out haha :D

    • @daeseongkim93
      @daeseongkim93 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      haha I feel ya', living in Hawaii but they make a video about an Alolan malasada without talking about Hawaii. They just jump right in and only mention the Portuguese origins. Portuguese Malasada is so different from a Hawaiian Malasada like Leonard's. Cringey at its finest.

    >EASIER RECIPE<
    -Get some biscuit dough.
    -Make them sphere/oval shapes
    -Get some jam/jelly/flavored marmalade. This is your filling. (yes if you want you can mix them. I did chocolate pudding, orange marmalade, and grape jelly.)
    -Cook it the same way they did in the video.
    -Add powder sugar.
    -Clean out the middle but be careful because the hole is the same one you put the filling into and can make it spill out if too big.
    -Put the filling you want in a cake icing thingy and squeeze it through the hole you made.
    -Put more powder sugar.
    dONE.

    Portuguese malasadas are like flatter puffies with no filling(which are super delicious), but I'll have to give this version a try, too! Lemon filled malasadas sound sooooo good!

    • @JakobKaine_BrickJAK
      @JakobKaine_BrickJAK 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think they were going for something that represents the different flavored "malasadas" in the game. Sometimes it really is a compromise on what can be done in short videos. I want to try these as well after Lent is over. The spice filled version sounds the best. :-)

    • @LittleAmyHe
      @LittleAmyHe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Karalyn Vargas That's because these aren't Portuguese malasadas. Malasadas became popular in Hawai'i when Portuguese plantation workers brought their recipes over with them, but then overtime it evolved into a rounder puffier thing. :) So, it's usually referred to as the Hawaiian malasada outside of Hawai'i.
      Traditionally in Hawai'i it's actually covered in sugar, not powdered sugar, and with no fillings.

    • @myownbravado
      @myownbravado 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, that's awesome! I figured there had to have been some sort of Hawaiian variant since that's where the game very clearly was designed after, but I've never seen one before! They look really good though, do you know if they taste like Portuguese malasadas or are they more like traditional American donuts?

    • @LittleAmyHe
      @LittleAmyHe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Karalyn Vargas Omg they definitely don't taste like a traditional American donut (ugh I hate them so much, aside from Krispy Kreme) XD
      It's super light and fluffy in the center. It's almost squishy and kind of stretchy when you pull it apart? The outside is crisp, but very thin. In reality, it's basically a ball with the entire thing fried, no ring in the center. I would imagine it tastes very similar to Portuguese malasadas, but the textures are probably a little different. I've unfortunately never had a Portuguese version.

    • @myownbravado
      @myownbravado 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That definitely sounds like a Portuguese malasada! The only difference is that, since it's flat, it has more crispiness and less fluff. I also hate donuts, so I'm super excited that they didn't stray too far from the original goodness!

    Not a very good recipe because I tried making these, but failed twice:
    1) Followed the recipe, including the heavy whipping cream (not mentioned of when to add in the steps) into the dough, but was too wet and ended up with a batter-like consistency.
    2) Followed the recipe without the heavy whipping cream, which was still too wet so I add 3 (+ ~1 for kneading) more cups of flour, and ended up with a super sticky dough that cracked when frying and was uncooked on the inside when fried to about the same color as in the video even as donut holes.
    What am I doing wrong? Could you give a more elaborate tutorial that shows every addition of ingredient in every step please? Thanks!

      Wow this pair in the video are idiots!! I just wasted so much ingredients and time trying to make these with the school age kids in child care and what a FAIL!!! U don’t explain when the extra 2 cups sugar is suppose to go in, how much yeast is in a “pack” and when to add the cream!!!!! The dough did NOT rise when added to a bowl of oil i have no idea what the heck you guys are even talking about!!!! So now I am left with these weird blogs of dough that look like raw pancakes!! Can’t even imagine what’s gunna happen when I try to fry them.... COMPLETE FAIL!!!!! Don’t do this recipe it sucks so bad!!!!!!

      @@Blunttingzz Did you try letting the dough sit there for about an hour or two? I had the exact same problem, whenever you start adding flour, after adding all the flour it needs (I forgot how much flour) let the dough sit there for about and hour or two, and then it should turn out great, but dont take my word for it, look up how to make maladada's and find someone else who can do it

    • @philipmendoza7668

      The heavy whipping cream is actually for the "vanilla pudding" that you will use as filling. That definitely was an oversight on their part. Regarding the watery mixture, from what I know that may had been due to improper mixing. The dry ingredients should be added gradually while the batter/mixture was being continuously mixed. This allows the dough to form.

    • @philipmendoza7668
      @philipmendoza7668 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Blunttingzz those 2 extra cups and heavy whipping cream are actually for the vanilla pudding mentioned in the recipe. An oversight from them as they might have assumed people know how to make simple vanilla pudding.
