  • Checking fro mating success in my nucleus colonies and as I was checking on a hive 3 swarm cells hatched, 2 queens fought for a brief moment, and 2 queens caged! I caught this colony right as it would have been swarming. I guess that's a way of swarm prevention hahahah jk...excited for whats to come and thank YOU so much for being here :)

    What an amazing sight to see the new queen emerge. You are doing a great job with your colonies and I find it very refreshing to see someone not afraid to share her learning experiences as they happen. When you approach beekeeping that way, you never miss an opportunity to learn something new. I'm inspired by your enthusiasm.

    If you have a piping queen you probably still have a cell in that hive, and need to go back through them and make sure as that could be another replacement queen for another hive. Queens usually don't pipe if there isn't another queen cell or another queen in the hive. Keep it up, you're expanding faster than me and I'm about to do the same this next year. Keep it up!

    • @beefitbeekeeping
      @beefitbeekeeping  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ahhhh that is good to know! The other cell that was in that first colony with a pipping queen I moved into another queenless colony. The 2nd piping Queen was the one I had taken out of that colony that had multiple cells and moved to a different one. Good to know that’s why they do it thank you ☺️

    Those might not be swarm cells. They could be emergency cells. It’s easier for them to draw queen cells on the bottom or edges of the comb. That nuc didn’t look that crowded it just needed another box. Very nice video

    that was not robbing at the end. usually in the afternoon, newer bees that have never been outside the hive will orient in front of the hive. It lasts about 15 minutes or so. It's usually a few hundred. If they were robbing there would be lots of aggression and you would see bees darting in and out of the entrance super fast. The other possibility is if that hive had a virgin queen and she mated that day, when she mates, hundreds of field bees will escort her back to the hive. Her scent attracts bees out in the wild.

    If you want to breed for mite immunity I suggest you contact and co-ordinate with Randy Oliver. He's been breeding to get bees immune to varroa mites and managed to reach almost 50% immunity after a few years, If you could get some of those queens and branch off to create more genetic lines with those traits it could be a huge boon.
    It's a massive undertaking, but I truly hope you manage to pull it off :)

I wintered 25 hives last winter first time ever in the spring had one viable hive. They didn’t look right in fall. No idea what got them dusted myself off got some mated queens and will be wintering 18 plus hives. Had a fun summer making new colony’s slow at times. You know who knows the most about bees the bees. If I see them flying upside down backwards won’t say why they doing that don’t care they know what their doing. If all mine die this winter I won’t even think what went wrong or why. So that is why they do it. I thought so but wasn’t 100% sure

      @@beefitbeekeeping Never heard piping before, I do have hearing issues with high pitches, do didn't think I would ever hear it, but I heard it on the video, so that was cool.

    what type of gloves did you start using?

      They are regular black nitrile gloves. I get the kind that have a spider on the box at Walmart bc they are a little thicker. I’ve had tons of bees on them and they never sting the gloves for some reason

      For sure! ☺️ these are just plain black nitrile gloves! I get the kind that are little thicker than the normal blue kind. The brand I get is whichever one has a spider on the box. They sell them in boxes of 100 so really good value ☺️
