Over here in NZ, it's a certain Government that strips assets & sells the Railways( in it's past life) . Love the video. Great sound on the EElectric locos. I've had to subscribe :-)
The railways in Tasmania never made "grand profits" so could never understand why Pacific National took it on? Such beautiful countryside, a wonder someone hasn't started a tourist steam train trip Hobart-Launceston-Hobart, would be a winner, even using diesel hauled heritage cars. Interesting to see some loco's driven from left, others from right side of cab and "Driver Only" too. Thanks Ted, a unique railway compared to the mainland. 😉
Good historical recording well done. Okay I can clear some discussion with fact. The Federal Government took over a backward run down railway in mid 1970's. Short 80 lb rail fish plated. Vacuum brake and screw couping. Motive power, rail, steel sleepers, wagons auto coupes, air brake, brought over from South Australia. Much used on the old 3foot 6inch Ghan. Flash but welding and Thermite introduced. Every damage rail end cut off to remove damage. Australian Nation took on the woodchip market. Spent money. As the market closed say Herrick, then Derby, Tonganah they lifted the track for reused. Some bought by Roger Smith for his business in the New Abt. Log haulage could be a problem , the loader at the mill would lift the wagon off the bogie trunion and sit it back down. Not knowing this, the train would derail later ling the track. Genesee and Wyoming took over and traded as Frieght Australia and Freight Victoria. Too much rail infrastructure to maintain. Toll rail offshoot Pacicfic National either knew the system was run down but they also had taken over Victorian rail system. They were payed out by the Vic State Government after the Vline passenger Kerang level crossing accident. A company may buy rail for share or corporate banking reasons . Big infrastructure on its books . Anyway steam train tourist trains between Hobart and Launceston no way. Tasmania road traveller tourist market limits their time before getting back to meet the ship or return the hire vehicle. Also State Government bails out the West Coast Wilderness Railway $4 million per year and they prefere some slight income and any rail tourist competition is not welcome. Also look at what is offer overseas. No 1950 stale carriages. Complete rebuild of locomotives and convert to auto couplings and air brake to make compatible with Tasrail. Coal is low grade high ash non user friendly compared with NSW Gunadah steaming coal. Volunteer preservation rail oerations in Tasmania are not successful . There is a solution that will work to have steam on one 6km section of line but it would require an intelligent cooperative and research.
No it would not be a winner. Tourist exploring Tasmania have a set agenda, budget and the clock is always ticking to get back to Devoport to board the ship or return the hire car or camper before flying home. There is far less time flexibility. What you need is a cafe bistro station a Lebrina running steam every 50 minutes into a unique camp and picnic recreation hub in Denison Gorge were you capture the passing road tourist fortwo hours, or attact the holiday makers Bridport to a unique Tasmanian experience having a 6km railway in the middle of the North East Rail trail. Cafes, restaurants, bars, bistros make money and they would subsidise the train operation .
I would love to have seen a modern diesel passenger service from the tourist ships in Hobart, up the Derwent Valley to National Park (and the water falls)? A "day trip return"... It may not have been the "White Pass and Yukon" but I feel that it could have had a chance? Why does everyone think "Steam train"? Maybe the Suburban rail corridor with modern equipment could still help Hobart's traffic back ups?
Funny how a Tasmanian business work's well then a mob from across Bass Strait comes in then all hell let's loose. I would not them arrange a chook raffle.
THE Federal Government Australian National Railways (Commonwealth Railways) took over from Tasmania in 1976. They transformed the primitive State owned railway. Loss making more of service they wanted out in early 2000's. Also Labor Paul Keating had the Competition Commision wanted privatization. U.S railroad company Genesee Wyoming bought it under the name Freight Australia then sold to Toll rail division Pacific National. Asset??? acquisition can look good on the corporate books for the share market with no intention to keep. Notice how Toll have new ship operating to the northern ports and Hobart closed with a distribution hub Brighton? Deals and wheels my friend deals and wheels.
Fabulous filming, absorbing action, excellent editing, superb scenery. Double rainbow over the lift bridge at 13:50 ! That's the Bridgewater Bridge? Out of service for rail since 2014? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridgewater_Bridge_(Tasmania) Rail services ceased using the bridge when the South Line was cut back to terminate at the Brighton Transport Hub in June 2014.
Cheers Zane. Yes, its a real tragedy that the new Bridgewater bridge has no allowance for rail. There are whole suburbs rapidly developing on the northern side, along with a population virtual explosion happening in the New Norfolk area. Its mind blowingly obvious that some form of passenger rail transport will be the sensible option within 20 years or so. But most people dont seem to be able to see into the furture.
Absolutely fantastic video. Great landscape shots, lots of technical content and great music. Well done sir!!

@@rsinclair6560 Thanks for that, very interesting and some politics involved, Tassie seems to be the forgotten rail system in Australia.
@@rsinclair6560should make it all a rail trail eh Cecil!
