    I liked your layback approach. That’s the way to do it. Also nice boat. Thanks great video. 🇨🇦👍

    I loved seeing your trip. This route is a favourite of my family's. We often stretch things out by staying two nights on Welcome. Thanks for posting your film.

      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I can see Welcome would be a great family lake. Lots of beach sites. I stayed on Harry for 2 nights hoping to do some fishing but the weather didn't cooperate. It ended up being the only rainy day though which was great. It's a beautiful area for sure. One of my favourites in the park.

    This is probably the 4th time I'm watching this video and every time it feels like watching it for the first time. Love your videos... Keep them comming. More of the whiskey and cigar scenes... Cheers!

      +Okan Dorsal Thanks very much for the comment! We're heading out for 8 days this Saturday assuming the ice is out so videos to follow. And for sure, there will be cigars and whiskey!

    Great trip! I just got back today from Rock ,2 nights Clydesgale and then 2 Pen and went in to vist the waterfall at the first portage, amazing falls and agree they would be even better in the spring.

      Definitely a very nice part of the park. I especially liked the forest around Lake Louisa.

    Great account of your solo, Larry. I just returned from 9 days solo in the BWCA. You had better weather than I. Five days of rain out of nine days. However, we cherish the good days and endure the rainy & windy days. All in all a great trip. Thanks as always for your vids.

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, some trips you get more good than bad but as long as you get some good and are prepared for the bad it's better than working! A trip to Quetico is definitely on my bucket list. And maybe I'd dip down into BWCA while I was there. I hear it's beautiful! Happy travels.

    Hey Larry, great video! Have enjoyed your previous installments and was glad to see you've posted another. Beautiful part of the Park...thanks for sharing it. As always, your subtle but clear sense of humour shines through. And that's a very nice canoe you've got there. Perhaps at 60 lbs a little heavy for a solo mission, but super nice.

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Andy. It was great to get back out there and I'm already anxious to go on the next trip! Yes, 60 is a bit heavy, but it's a trade off as it's such a nice canoe to paddle solo.

    Thanks for sharing, Larry. Looks like a fabulous trip. You have some great gear and a beautiful canoe. How did you like the hammock? I'll be trying out my new blackbird xlc next week in the park. Trust Steve is well.

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Harley. The hammock is great but it is quite a bit cooler than sleeping in a tent. When the overnight temp dipped to 4 I was in long johns and put in a down sweater and hat. I was fine when u went to bed but woke up chilly around 3 am. I get a great sleep in the hammock and it's far easier to get in and out if than a tent. To me that's the biggest benefit.

    Hey Larry! Great video, I have been watching you for quite a few years now! You inspired me to start portaging through Algonquin in 2015 and now I've done 6 trips in the park! Any chance you could let me know the route you took in this trip?

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Victor Koos hey Victor - glad to hear you’ve gotten out so many times! For this trip I went in at Rock Lake, down to Penn, up the Galipo River to Welcome Lake, through Harry and Rence and into Louisa. From there back out to Rock. It’s a great route - one of my favourites in the park.

  • @BivouacBradley
    @BivouacBradley 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome trip, thanks for sharing. I've done the same route except backwards, and I'm pretty sure I stayed on that same site on Louisa except there was none of that fancy woodwork. Did it still have the bench that someone burned a big bowl shaped hole into? Glad to see someone improved the place a little.

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it did have the bowl. Must have been the same site. The new benches looked pretty recent. There was lots of sawdust on the trail to the thunder box where the tree that was cut up was down. Great route.

  • @Tnapvrvideo
    @Tnapvrvideo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wonderful share! Always enjoy your trip videos. It would be most helpful if you included your trip itinerary (body of water to body of water) in the heading area. These look like fabulous trips to replicate - especially following in the wake of someone with your experience. Safe travels!

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. That's a good idea! On this route, I accessed via Rock Lake, went down to Pen Lake, over to Welcome Lake, in through Harry and Renee lakes and then made my way up to Louisa and back to Rock. It is one of the nicest routes I've been on in the park, but there is quite a bit of portaging. None of it is too difficult, but some of the portages are long if you are double carrying as I was.You could easily do this route in 3 days as many do, but I like to take my time.

    Hey Larry another great video as always. What kind of shorts are you wearing on that first night?

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rusty. They're the same pants I wear for the whole trip, just with the legs zipped off. They're Fjallraven Keb Gaiter trousers. Very durable and they dry quickly.

  • @jdw1038
    @jdw1038 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. Thanks. I stayed on that site on Louisa in May 2012. No "chair" then.
    Great gear. Is that a cuben fibre fly for your hammock? If so, how would you rate its durability?

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jeff. It is cuben fibre and strength is amazing. It's hard to say about durability as I've only had it for 2 years but in that time I've had no problems. I think it will be good though. It doesn't stretch like silnylon which is nice for keeping it taught. Amazingly light though. A little pricy too.

    enjoy all your videos Larry! Great trip selection, bringing me back to many routes that I have completed in Algonquin. Any suggestions/recommendations based on your Louisa loop? Planning on doing this route in a months time and would appreciate any tips you have, in particular did you enjoy the direction your route took?
    Looking forward to your 2016 installation of trips. Thx

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ian Rutherford thanks very much. I loved this route. Lake Louisa is a gem with many great campsites. There are quite a few longer portages on the trip but they are pretty well travelled and the not too hilly. The Louisa to Rock in particular while 3k long is pretty flat. I'm not sure it matters which way you travel the route. I wanted to spend my last night on the more quiet Louisa vs say Rock or Penn which are much busier. In peak fall this would be a stunning trip as there is lots of deciduous bush.

    • @ianrutherford4344
      @ianrutherford4344 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Larry Hyatt thanks for the insight! Certainly agree with more peace, particularly to finish off a trip. Im thinking I will try and capture my adventure, as I never considered this prior to seeing your (and others) videos, although I am sure it will take me a few times to get used to this. Any big trips for your this summer?

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ian Rutherford my brother and are planning a trip the first week of May weather permitting down the Nipissing river from the Tim Lake access and then back up the Tim river for a 7 day loop. The top part of the Nip can be clogged with alder so we may be in for an adventure. Once we're through that though I think it will be great. Now if we could just get rid of this snow!

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most was shot with a Sony a6000. I also brought a DSLR on this trip (5D) but used it mainly for stills. On the subsequent trip (and on most trips) I bring the Sony. It's a great little camera.

    • @GBE
      @GBE 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea it seems pretty effective eh. Did you just begin the solo adventures? I don;t know if I could get through the mental part of it. Any suggestions lol.
      I'll be doing a mass TH-cam meet up in Algonquin May 2-4. Stay tuned.

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GreenBlueEarth.ca I think I've done about 10 solos including one winter one. I'd suggest starting by going for one night not far from an access point in a fairly well travelled area both for safety and mentally you don't feel as "alone". The thing I find that is the biggest challenge is that you have no one to share the chores with so its very important to keep things as simple as possible. I think everyone feels more on edge the first few times but the more you do it the less you feel this way. Now I love solo and I'm looking to plan a long trip - maybe 2 weeks - at some point. The last thing is safety. I don't really worry about bears and stuff but I do worry about hurting myself so I think an emergency communication device is important. Good luck!

    • @GBE
      @GBE 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Larry Hyett Love it man! Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. The mental "talking to myself" would be the biggest challenge hahahha.
      Cheers and keep filming. It's great!

    Great video! Doing this route in May, except reverse of what you did. Hows that 3km portage?

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s the better way to do it actually as you’ll do more downhill than up. The 3 km portage is fairly easy as it’s well used and reasonably flat. Enjoy your trip!

      I think so, easily if you're doing single carries.

  • @TheWoodedBeardsman

    Thanks for sharing! Any idea what all the extra noise was from - was it camera noise? What sort of camera are you using?

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The Wooded Beardsman Thanks for watching! I'm using a Sony a6000 and I took the camera strap off but left on the little metal triangle things and I think that that's what was making the noise. I also bring a DSLR but I find I don't use it as often as it's just easier to use the smaller Sony. Next time I will bring one or the other - most likely the Sony.

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Larry Hyett
      Yeah, that sounds about right! I was hoping (for you) that it wasn't something internal about the camera. The camera takes nice some really nice video, great images. Thanks!

  • @TheFleetcaptain210
    @TheFleetcaptain210 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video. I started camping this year after many years away from it and forgot how hard it is to get up off the ground - older guy here. So I bought a hammock after the first trip in May and never looked back. It is very comfortable and so much easier to swing my legs out of the hammock and start the day in a sitting position.
    BTW - did you stow your food barrel in the large canoe pack while travelling?
    Look forward to your next video.

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly why I like the hammock so much too. Especially for those middle of the night trips. Crawling out of the tent was such a pain (literally). Yes, I did store the barrel in the bottom of the pack. It fits sideways perfectly.

  • @AdamCraigOutdoors

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching Adam. The hammock is a Warbonnet Blackbird, the top quilt is a Hammock Gear Burrow and the under quilt is a Jacks R Better Greylock 3. The Greylock is a partial under quilt which has taken a bit of fiddling for me to get right but I think I have it figured out now. All great stuff.
