Read an article, about John Paul Jones talked about some of the songs the wrote were so complicated as far as drums are doing one time signature and guitar/bass and another time signature. Example is the song Four Sticks, Bonzo really didn't read music he FELT the beat, John Paul Jones was musically trained from a child, his parents were professional musicians. Say what you want, because EVERY member of this band made it work, no Led Zep without any of them, but JPJ was most musically talented member of this band. His bass and Bonzos drums made up one hell of a rhythm section ✌️

If you look up Led Zeppelin and look for all the instruments they used in the lifetime of the band you will be Blown away! Can you imagine, growing up at time when all of these rocks bands first started out!?? Let me tell you it was amazing! Record stores were the thing, record players was a must! Not all of my albums made through the years. I do have some. Mostly we stayed glued to our radios to hear the newest songs and bands! The Rock Revolution was amazing to live through! And yes I Am still at sixty years old a Led head!! ❤

Every time Robert Plant whips out the harp, I'm 'YES!' It's easy to forget how many times he employs that instrument. It's a great foil to Jimmy's insane guitar leads.
He`s such a good an innovative player . I always wished he incorporated it in more songs. I saw Sugar Blue in the early 80`s and he ain`t got nothing on Plants playing.....but he too is incredible .

This song was on their Presence album. Presence was underrated IMO. The whole album is strong but there are two absolute bangers, Achilles Last Stand and this song. Nobody's Fault But Mine is a cover of an old traditional gospel song. Zeppelin was really good at these covers In My Time of Dying and When the Levee Breaks are two other well known examples. I was fortunate enough to see them in 1977 in Pontiac, Michigan, a road trip from Toronto. Fantastic show, this Presence album had just been released.

One of the reasons Presence is underrated may be down to the track sequence. If Nobody's Fault had begun side 1 instead with side 2 ending on a bang with Achilles, it might've flowed better making it even more impactful...maybe.

I played in a band that covered that part as part of a Zep instrumental medley! I play bass and me and the drummer we in synch. So fun.

It is definitely a harmonica. I think they either used some kind of overdrive on it, or pushed the level into the red, and maybe some kind of phase. They always had the best harmonica sound.
Robert is badass on that harmonica and I love that he carried it over into his solo career when he does Zeppelin songs, stays true to the ones that had harmonica in it.

Robert Plant was in a pretty bad car accident prior to recording this album. He actually recorded his vocals sitting in a wheelchair. Amazing and highly underrated album. It has my all time favorite song called Achilles Last Stand. I HIGHLY recommend it.

This is definitely one of the heaviest songs ever recorded. Absolutely thunderous drums and bass, and the vocals, harmonica and guitar are sick. Zeppelin at their very best.
Zep was built as a Blues-Rock band, that was their whole thing.
Yeah, pretty much everything they did is based on 12 Bar Blues chord progressions.
Robert Plant plays his vocal cords like a new amazing instrument, one of the greatest, if not greatest singing voices ever. Some of the songs his amazing voice gives me goosebumps, every single time I hear it. All 4 are GOATS, at their crafts, & together they are GODS.
Jimmy Page once said that when you listen to Led Zeppelin you hear all instruments and vocals on the same volume levels (paraphrase). You can hear everything clearly, no volume reduction heard in the background.
This was inspired by American Blues singer Blind Willie Johnson, who played in the 1920s. In searching for a deeper meaning to the song, fans came up with a few ideas. Some thought it was about Jimmy Page's blossoming heroin addiction. Others thought it was comparable to Robert Johnson's "Hellhound On My Trail," in that it was Plant lamenting Zeppelin's supposed deal with the devil. A third theory is that Plant was apologizing for the song "In My Time Of Dying," which after his car crash he said he would never sing again.

Did Led Zeppelin do a great job? Absolutely but it's not their song, they took it from someone else, in this case another great Black bluesman who died penniless.

You haven't truly heard this song until you hear L.A. Forum 6/21/77. That whole show is Zeppelin firing on all cylinders.

The first known recorded version was performed by Blind Willie Johnson. It has been covered and interpreted numerous times, perhaps most famously in this version by Led Zeppelin.

Just so you know, The Mothership was a compilation of various songs from their albums throughout the years...put together (and remastered, I believe) by Jimmy Page well after the breakup of the band.
This particular song is originally from their album "Presence"....first track on the second side. Perhaps their most underrated album!
As far as I know, Robert Plant isn't using any effects with his harmonica....maybe a little reverb....however, you can bend the tones etc by using your lips differently and partially sliding the harmonics a little.......as well as opening and closing the way your hands cup the instrument.
It's from the album "Presence" originally. There's a lot you can do to manipulate the sounds of instruments, and some great analog effects were available at the time of this recording. Wah wah pedal is basically a frequency filter operated by your foot. The simple signal chain is, instrument into effects pedal, then effects pedal to the amplifier.
Asia hit on it: there isn't a bad Zeppelin song. They're all good in their own way.

I was just saying the same thing a while back. They really don’t miss throughout their entire catalog. I really can’t say that of any other band, ever being able to maintain that kind of consistency other than Steely Dan.
Hot Dog seems a fun lighthearted tribute, so I don’t think the intent misses the mark though it may not meet everyone’s awfully high expectations. But hey, even in conceding freakin’ Hot Dog.. that’s only ONE song, which really boils down to one hell of a career spanning batting average.

The guitar and piano on that song is great. Yes the weakest song on their weakest album. But it has as much musical value as other good rock bands greatest songs.
Dude the drums and Bonzo are what make Led Zeppelin. You can say that for 95% of their songs. Great reaction 👍.

One of my favorites of all time. Puts all of the bullshyte in the true and proper perspective.
People are really missing out if they don’t search out the originators of all the great blues artists that inspired all the bands of the 60’s-70’s rock era.
It is an absolutely essential and richly rewarding heritage to explore.
I’m trying to find as much of it on vinyl as I can budget each month.
And I think I grew up with this music and people are just now listened to it. Amazing.😂❤

Being a Led Zeppelin fan from before I was officially a teenager, this is 1 of my favorites. The version Page & Plant did on No Quarter in the 90's is so incredibly awesome. It's toned down but incredibly amazing.
Quick story; I bought the Presence CD right when it came out and took it over to a friend's house who had the most high-end stereo system I've ever seen…massive speakers and all the associated gear. We put it on and during Nobody's Fault But Mine we had it cranked when suddenly during Jimmy's solo one of the speakers cut out. We shut everything off to check it out, and the fuse in the back of the speaker had blown. And not just the fuse's little metal filament was broken, but the glass case that the filament was in had shattered. Such is the power of Led Zeppelin.

This song is an adaptation of the blues song by blind Willie Johnson's "nobody's full but mine" which is a blues song about somebody dealing with a drug addiction and if you listen to the lyrics it'll all make sense.
This is the BLUES. Jimmy Page, who started Led Zeppelin, said he didn't really think of his band as a conventional rock band. His music was more based on the BLUES of players like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, John T. Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, and others of this style. During those silent breaks the musicians internalize the beat silently to know when to come back in. Musicians do this effortlessly. The music is so entrenched inside us we feel the beat inside whether it's being played out loud or not.

"Monkey on my back" is a slang way of saying an heroine addiction. Jimmie Paige was an heroine addict. "Nobody's fault but mine." Gives insight to the song.
The rhythmic changes and chunks of dead air are part of the elements that makes it more than just a rock ‘n roll song. Compare this to almost any of the Stones rock songs and you’ll immediately hear the difference. And yes, I agree with BJ. The harmonica is the blues element that adds so much to this piece.
What do expect from one of greatest Rock n' Roll Band in Music History!!!! No one does it like Led Zeppelin!!!! and BJ was right!!! A little Blues added to the song with the harmonica and Robert's sanging like he's been singing with James Brown who he was heavily influenced by.....makes another Masterpiece of a song!!!

John Bonham was the king of the backbeat… He was also able to come in 1/2 beat early and 1/2 beat late….Also if you notice in the background when he's pounding away he bleeds into the vocals and into the guitar seamlessly playing note for note behind them and you can barely tell he's there. Also Asia there are two things that are always in Led Zeppelin….The blues and sex.

This is one of my favorite Zeppelin tracks. It is a partial cover. The original was written by Blind Willie Johnson in 1927 then Page/Plant tweaked it. I just adore the song.
He nailed it, definitely has blues inspiration in the song. And that WAS a harmonica in the song.

I have loved Zeppelin since I was a teen, but no one seems to be giving credit where credit is due. This is one of my favorites by them but it was originally a Blind Willie Johnson song. That sound you hear that you said sounded different and could not explain was the soul of Blind Willie. Like most English rock bands (Zeppelin, Stones, Cream, etc) of the 60's 70's the their first intro into music was blues and soul. So many bands, along with their original music, remade old blues music. I would love to hear a reaction to the original vs the remake.
Its amazing how this comes off of the Presence album and that album is still so underrated. And it's only one of the all time masterpieces contained there.

Once in awhile you get a "lead drummer". Bonham was one of them. Keith Moon as well.
I bought “Mothership” the day it released! It’s more than a Greatest Hits. It combines, brilliantly, greatest hits and hidden tracks. For us that own all Zeppelin albums, Mothership gives us all the greatness in a 2 CD set.

They were into using flangers and phasers for sound effects, but that was definitely a great harmonica piece by Plant.

Led Zeplin introduced me to blues music which is by far my favorite genre, and I grew up with rock and heavy metal in the '60's and 70's.
Blues Harp, that harmonica. There's a button on it, allows notes to be bent into sharp or flat.
It's amazing how through the older quality of that audio it still grooves like crazy. And great point by Asia about how it not metronomed back then and the breaks are out of time which creates great tension.
Didn’t you know that base of good groove is in melody and composition? In the second line in drums even if it is first on eye. Not in “quality” of todays sound generator worthy physics laboratory science.
None of this is accidental. Like many of their songs, it crosses genres very well.
Led Zeppelin was ahead of their time......and remember "rabbit foot" had only one bass drum 🥁.

They made my youth a greater place to be. It's sad how our children don't know how to play an instrument much less know what they are and the sounds they make. Bring music back to school and other arts. We all can use music at any time. It's hard to imagine only knowing today's so called music. They've got some stuff in that catalog that will blow your mind. They reunited in '07 for a show at the O2 Arena. That live version of Kashmir is incredible. PS I'm in Massachusetts, every year there's a rib cook-off here in the ribs are incredible but I feel like it's missing something cuz it's not in Texas. I need to go to a Texas rib cook-off and I would like you to be my chaperones. Look, I played sports all my life so pretty much everything hurts, but I wouldn't change that. Some of the best things in my life were during competition.
These guys bang me but as far as I know the damage isn't permanent except for my hearing from turning it up so loud because it's so f^(king good!
