I believe the tree you were looking at with similar bark to ash was an elm, which in my experience can produce MANY more morels than ash. Basically ash, tulip poplar, and elm all have similar bark and are all great trees for morels.

Plus I really think a cure for this virus exists in the different amazing mushrooms that grow across our amazingly awesome country. Paul stamets is working hard to find a natural immunity along with our amazing drug companies who still exist in the u.s.a. I'm proud of our country and you guys keep up gods work. God bless

In a world of pandemic, and children being hopelessly addicted to the digital world.. same with a lot of parents.. This is a beautiful video.. and I hope this experience with your children keeps them connected to the earth in some shape or form.. and I hope they continue this small tradition onto their children.. If we continue to disconnect with nature and everything the world gives us, we will all perish.. Morels should be starting to pop up by end of next week here in Iowa.. Good luck hunting!

First time viewer. Nice family time in the woods, beautiful. You are so fortunate, congratulations. You may not be aware, though, that an 8 week old puppy shouldn't be out like that, yet. They still need to be kept warm an off of the bare ground for the most part, not to mention he's in a sort of shock from being uprooted from his litter. Thanks for the adventure, take care.

Long time ago I lived in Indiana and found them everywhere, no specific tree, water, hilltop. bottom flat land, holler, etc. Found 1 in Jackson Co GA right next to a concrete manhole on a well beaten trail. They are where they are!

Zach, excellent video and pumped for morel season. We have had some luck while out turkey hunting in Dawson forest in the past few days as well with morels and oysters. Addressing your question about ash tree id versus sweetgum . . . The bark of ash trees is much more spongy/corky when you press into it with your thumb as compared to the sweetgum. Also, one of the trees you thought might have been an ash in this video is a hickory. Hickory has the diamond pattern and compound leaves similar to the ash, but again does not have as corky of bark. Hope this helps!

I have found them on railroad tracks in the old black cinders next to poplar trees here in Indiana they seem to like poplar trees and grapevines I've heard people say look around pines but never had much luck with that they seem to be like ginseng wet ground hills and little creeks running through woods with alot of cover but they are unpredictable

in Ohio, we can tell an Ash tree from sweetgum by if the tree has little holes everywhere, like someone shot it with a BB gun a few hinfred times....its not a foolproof way but most our Ash trees have been hit with the beetle borer bug and they drill little holes everywhere.....I go out about every day soon as the season starts, any week now, and I rarely find an ash tree that is not been hit by the beetle...some more than others, but I can recall on 1 hand in the last 5-7 years finding what I knew was an ash tree that was not hit by the beetle.

Really good finds, and really good haul! I love that you're teaching the kids the correct way (Cut, don't pluck) I hope you have some good recipes ready! I like to stuff them ;)

Cutting and plucking are equally fine. Neither damages the mycelium.

Should I wait and see if the smaller ones get any bigger before I pick them or is that more than likely as big as they’re gonna get

Hey bud. With this crazy chilled, rainy spring and a 5 day average of 57 degree soil temp here in N GA, do you think there's a possibility of an extended season? Does that ever happen or have you seen it before?

I found one black morel in my back yard under a walnut, and another tree
Do you think I should cut it or let it do its natural cycle so I get more next year??

    • @Claire-yv7lu
      @Claire-yv7lu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Cut it and enjoy it lol. As long as you cut it at the stem rather than tearing it out of the ground you're all good

Why do you cut the stems? Have always pinched them off here. Just curious if there is a reason.

Don't forget to knock the spores off before you cut them. Good to see you out and about.

I'm new to mushroom hunting. My husband and son have always went hunting.. I went 2 times so far. It's alot of fun. I like to make it a game. Who ever finds the most and we make bets. Lol. Anywho. I lost both times I went.. 😬 I have been trying to research and learn as much as I can. But learning the difference in trees .. hard for me.. tlalot of them look the same, probably because they are the same. 🤣

There are a few but personally, I wouldn't waste the money. It's really hard to go wrong with morels, chanterelles and chicken of the woods. If you decide to branch further out from those, it may be worth looking into.

There are False Morels, though if you look them up they are very different from true Morels. Other than that, you can’t go wrong with morels, very easy to identify.

Them at 20:38 look like honey mushrooms. Not eatable at least I’m not eating em. Cool seeing how them tree roots run. Natural bridge. Man dude that airplane would have made cool garage art.

Privet & Ash come from the same Olive Genus family.
If you would like, I can teach you long-distance how to protect a maturing ash tree for less than $20 a year until killer emerald ash borer event is inevitably over and fatal danger passes in another 10 years.
I could even donate and ship some of the stuff I use to inoculate trees as an arborist here in Chicago.
But you need to apply it in April or by middle of May the latest in order to protect a tree from this year's EAB attack.
Sounds like you're forest does not have many ash trees left. And EAB populations build up much quicker than they do in urban areas, completely killing off every wild woodland ash tree in a biblical in-scope four years.
