I have owned many shar-pei over the years. I have had many other breeds as well. I see alot of information saying this breed is not for 1st time owners. I strongly disagree. They basically potty train themselves and do not have separation anxiety 😳 I still currently have a Shar-pei! 30+ years of the breed and NEVER a problem with housebreaking. I did loose one to shar-pei fever😢
I’ve had over 40 of them I love them I had a two year old champion Shar-Pei that I paid $3000 for I was walking my Shar-Pei when he was about three years old 2 1/2 three a pitbull attacked me within 30 seconds to Pitbulls dead
I agree, the only part that would make them not a great 1st time dog would be because of their standoffishness towards strangers and other dogs. Otherwise they're great dogs😄
I've had a Black Lab, Husky/Malamute cross, a Shar Pei, two long haired Chihuahuas, and a Pitbull (blue nose gorgeous dog). I found that Labs, Pitbulls and Shar Pei share a common trait; headstrong but very loyal. Sure Husky's and Malamutes are head strong and a cross between them is very headstrong. Shar Pei and Pitbulls are also highly intelligent, of course so are husky and Malamutes, but Shar Pei and Pitbulls like to show off how smart they are. My Shar Pei was a family dog, my Pitbull was mine when I moved out. She and I bonded, but she and the older Shar Pei, well they were inseperable. Wherever one went the other was to follow. Meanwhile the long haired Chihuahua was content to sit on her but, until the two started playing a little too rough for her liking. The Shar pei would argue with the Chihuahua, whereas my Pitbull would cower and then try to make it up to the little dog by bribing her with toys and treats. It didn't help that my Pitbull was seven months old when she met the other dogs and the Shar Pei was going on 8 years old. I agree that Shar Pei and even Pitbulls can be great first time dogs, but like most dogs bred originally for guard duty and fighting, they do require lots of training and attention. Shar Pei will practically potty train themselves, but so will Pitbulls. Pitbulls and Shar Pei tend to be very playful and energetic while being exceptionally loyal. Both are certainly headstrong. Our Shar Pei was attacked by an Airedale. When got back from the vet only to have the Shar Pei jump out of the car and then climb the Airedale's pen (A seven foot fence) to seek his vengeance. He only backed off when my dad and I got into the pen to get him. Though he did have the Airedale pinned and when we yelled at him and went to grab him he stared at us and pressed his paw and all of his weight into the Airedale's throat. Shar Pei are far from stupid. They will remember nearly everything. But they can be extremely friendly dogs as well and they will remember people they like years later.
My first ever dog is a shar-pei, turned 7 yrs old 2 days ago and I couldn’t be happier on how Chico taught me so much about dogs! I disagree that shar-pei are not for first time owners as in general who ever decides to take in an animal as their family they should be responsible and take the best care, there is no ‘easy’ dog, as long as you take care of them and love them no issues would occur. Chico, my shar-pei even trained my second pup when I adopted one mix husky couple of years ago. They are a blessing 🙏🏼
My sharpei Izzy said goodnight and I love you before bed. ☺ She was amazing and smart ...unfortunately she passed away from amyloidosis right before she turned 4. I will forever miss her! Very precious! I was a first time buyer dog....just give them all your love. Perfect companion. ❤ I was with her when she took her last breath.
Sorry for your loss 😔 my baby sharpei Happy passed a month ago until today I can’t know exactly why ? She was 2.5, after her lepto vaccine in 4 days she was gone. She stopped eating then started vomiting and and then I got back from work she was gone. She was very loving ❤️
I used to raise Shar Pei. This year I lost my last one. She was (I know it is very very ) unusual close to 20 years old. Her mother was a Shar Bull. They were a local breeders idea to cross a Shar Pei and English. It was a pretty mix and they were trying to get the best traits out of the two and eliminate some of the bad (like skin problems) The Shar Bulls were a great looking dog with very good temperament and protective skills. Like Shar Pei., extremely loyal. The one I lost was from a Shar Bull and my Dad's border Collie. It was all the dog's planning and not mine but the puppies were super cute and Meesha was a great dog and protector to my family and home for a long time. Miss her greatly.
I have a Shar Pei the best dog I’ve ever owned. She gets along with every dog she sees and person she sees. Absolutely a wonderful breed and the best companion.
Great info! All I can say it that I had a Shar Pei mix, and she was a very intelligent, well behaved dog. I almost never had her on a leash, she would stop and wait at every corner and she even understood that you cross only when it's a green light. I'm so impressed with their intelligence, that considering getting ONLY a Shar Pei.
1st time I get a shar-pei female part of our family...( had other race of dog before)... Actually, it is the Best Dog I ever had! Perfect size for the city. Not too small, not to big... So perfect behavior: clean in house, does not brake any fourniture, clothes or shoes... No anxiety when I go out working, very attached to her family,..but not over protective...just good. ...soft heart, respectfull, but doesnot let herself get pet easily by strangers, loves soft toys, and does not bark too much...just advice ... Mine does not like so much water, or bath, But really....the Best Dog I ever had!

I had 2 Shar pei they were 2 of the best dogs we ever had. They were rescues. We go 2 the shelters 2 adopt are furkids . We are very open 2 any breed and middle age and seniors. Sadly the older dogs get passed over 2 often.
My sharpei coco passed away a few months ago. She had sharpei fever and suffered episodes since she was just a few months old,we finally lost her age 9. She was just the most amazing smartest dog ever. She was a big sweet Teddy with her family. Yes they are aloof but polite with strangers and can be extremely aggressive in protecting their family. But if trained right and socialised well this is not a problem. We never had a problem with coco. I will miss her always. The most amazing breed ever

Now I’m 35 and got one for my birthday this one is a complete diferenr dog all she wants to do is play and be around me super strong nothing beats a shar pei snuggles lol

Beware of salty food. Consider the weight of the animals. I mean the salt ration per day is much lower than humans. You could be giving it high blood pressure and potential for a stroke.
Best dogs in the World BUT- Shar Pei Fever will kill them quick. We got our Baloo for a hefty price from a reputable breeder. NO guarantees on Shar Pei Fever eradication. Our precious Baloo made it to 5 years old. He got Shar Pei Fever and was dead in 3 days. Very sad to say no more Shar-Pei for us, can't ask for another BIG broken heart.
Is there a sharpei owner here who is having any difficulties making the dog eat their kibble (we add very delicious topper but he does not really like to eat that much T.T)? What's your dog food?
We feed a raw diet and she loves it. She has quite a few allergies or intolerances right now that we are trying to sort out. I just recently heard that this breed does not do well with beef or chicken. As of yesterday we switched her to duck and will see if this helps.
I have my beautiful Baelee. We lost our Baby Bruce last year to Shar pei fever. Baelee personality is little different. She is bossy and when she gets mad she tear up my shoes. I love dogs however I really love this breed. They are so intelligent. I have decided to get her a baby brother. Looking for a silver. I can't wait to find him.

My only dog ever was my pure breed shar pei that passed away in Nov 2022, I had her for 13 years. Best dog ever, I will always miss her, and wish I could get another one. But I got lucky getting her they sre so expensive.

I am the owner of an aggressive male pup of about 12-14 weeks. Here is a world of difference between him and a regular dog. I've had a Shar-Pei before who was a female and was the kindest sweetest thing that every walked the earth. I had her until she died at 12. I thought this one would be like her. Not. When I first brought him home and he adjusted after a couple of weeks I noticed him sitting in the shadows sizing me up. When I would correct him for doing something bad. He would get even (after a couple of minutes.) The last time he lightly bit the back of my foot (the heel) So, I'm just busy training him, showing him lots of love (just in case he is feeling inscure) and showing no fear by refusing to back down or showing any weakness what so ever. I would say that the Shar-Pei is for an experienced dog person with an abundance of patience.
Males are WAAAAAAAAAAY different in every way. Girl dogs all the way smart more gentle everything bout them is better never had a good boy dog but now thats jus me

I buy a rotisserie chicken..half for me other have I pull chicken and mix with my 1 year Olds kibble....try lil chicken and broth mix in
