I just got the FLY WING Huey UH-1 and right out of the box I got a GPS Connection Exception error (constant blinking red light). Support told me I need to calibrate the compass which i did successfully many times. I ordered a new FlyWing H1 FC GPS Long Wire which should remedy the problem. Great eye opening video presented in a professional educational format. UPDATE: Replacement GPS module installed, recalibrated and flys like good in GPS. When switching from GPS mode to 3D, the Heli descends, so I have to push up on the collective past center, need to figure out how to tune that and I'll have a good heli.
Very informative and helpful in a no-nonsense style of instruction. I have an H1 on the way to install on a trex 470l. This answered many questions for me. Thanks!
Another Great video John! Thanks for sharing your passion and knowledge with us. Your videos are always Fantastic and everything is covered, no loose ends as you never leave us hanging. You always cover any questions we may have!
It mixes in some tail rotor pitch to counter main rotor torque the moment the collective is increased to help the tail gyro out so it doesn't have to play catch up as much when moderate to large collective torque spikes hit. It's generally called something like torque compensation, collective pre-compensation, or tail pitch pre-comp on most FBL systems. I've never seen it referenced as DMA, thus the confusion I had. DTA would make more sense (dynamic torque assist). In GPS mode it's not needed at all since the collective response is so slow and tame so there are no drastic main rotor torque spikes created. You only need collective/tail torque precomp when introducing sudden and large collective pitch changes. If you did dial it in or too much of it, you would likely notice the tail kick out slightly in the opposite direction of main rotor torque every time you gave sudden and high amplitude collective commands.
Thank you for the video. i am just way too busy to do this. i have a new KDS Innova 550 complete combo sitting at home but I can't find time to build and setup with H1.
Dear Sir I have set this heli up two different times. Myself once and a heli expert the second time and everything is perfect. Then when we get every thing up to speed and try to lift off the moment it gets light it barrels over to the left. I sure appreciate your help with my issue. Thanking you in advance
Hi John, thanks again. I was about to return this H1, I thought it's a crap! Lol. Now I'd setup everything as you did. Going for the test flight once rains stop. 😎
Thank you very much! I`ve had issues with my older Microbeast Plus after updating to the latest firmware which made the FBL system totally malfunction with the update. Looking for a replacement FBL, you help me make a decision on the H1 controller, this is the one to buy.
As I state in the video and again in the description, compatibility has *nothing* to do with radio brand or protocol, it has to do with the receiver pairing; specifically that the receiver has an S-BUS output port. That is how this system communicates with the the RX via S-BUS. Nothing is going to be "automatically" compatible out of the box, it all requires radio setup and programming. I suppose if you wanted to distill things down to the most basic/seamless integration with the least amount of TX programming, you would get a radio that has Futaba channel mapping order out of the box (AETR), be at least 9 channels, and get a 9 ch+ RX for it that has an S-BUS output.
Thanks to this tutorial i have setup my H1 on a Trex 500 how ever i can't get the invert switch to function i am using a Frsky X20S everything else works. Thanks for the video
Great video thanks from the uk. I think I’m just about to order one. I use microbeast which I can set up in 5 minutes without a pc but I want to learn inverted btw. Cheers
Sorry, but the H1 won't teach anyone how to fly inverted. It will only make your regular flying worse. Stick with the Beast (it flies much better than the H1 ever will), and learn your inverted orientations, first on the simulator and then apply those skills out at the field. I cover inverted progression skills (actually Bert does) on day 11 "How to Fly Helicopter Aerobatics in the flight school section of my website: www.rchelicopterfun.com/how-to-fly-3d-helicopter.html If you need electronic help aids, then get a FBL system that has inverted rescue auto-level such as the Ikon. The H1 won't work as a rescue system, it will likely crash.
what I would need is a function to set up a box on my flying field, where the heli can't leave the box. so the H1 would detect if the heli is about to leave the box and then take over control to stop it from leaving the box. especially of course when it is about to hit the ground. I know that the altimeter has some inaccuracies due to varying air pressure, but a tolerance of 3 meters or so would be enough for me. and then when the heli is saved, in the box at a safe height, you can take over control again. man that would be so handy.
Hi John love your videos and books i bought you have taught me so much. I fly outside of town no internet wi-fi how do you calibrate GPS compass with no internet fly wing has a video showing how to do it but they are obviously connected to internet on video. I have arthritis in my hands thats why i bought bell 206 scale with H1 GPS FLIGHT CONTROLLER do you think i would have to buy a hotspot and pay for data plan to calibrate Thanks Don j PS started flying 1992 no internet had mechanical gyros
@Don Johnson - You don't have to be connected to the internet when performing the calibration, only that you have the setup wizard loaded on your laptop.
Thank you John for the help and advice you’ve provided. Since I fly JR still I didn’t have SBUS or PPM available until I located. Spektrum AR7700 Rx which has PPM output. Today everything went fine with the setup UNTIL my buddy and I realized that when we applied elevator the collective calibration display responded. I’m not sure how to fix that until I can buy the same FrSky radio system you use in a few months. Any fixes you can recommend in the meantime or am I dead in the water until then? Thanks in advance!!
Good to know about the AR7700 as a working RX option. I'll add that important info in the description for other JR/Speky DSM users. As for the elevator/collective issue. Yes, that's exactly what one would expect since as I mentioned, the H1 uses Futaba channel mapping (AETR) not JR/Spektrum mapping (TAER). Should be able to sort it with some creative mix programming.
Thanks John, Very helpful video. I am trying the H1 in a trex 450l. I am to the point where I arm the heli, I get the blinking green light. When I throw motor switch nothing happens. I sure would appreciate any suggestions you might have. I know motor and ecs are good bypassing the H1 and just using tx and receiver. Thanks
hello and congratulations for your tutorial ... I wanted to know to install it on the trex 600 nitro, what problems can I find, in the installation, or is it like on an electric model? I don't understand where to connect the throttle servo to the H1..can you help me and give me advice on how and where to install it better? Thanks again
Doesn't work on nitro (at least I wouldn't trust it). 1. Only allows fixed throttle output so you can set carb position during priming starting, cold idle, fast idle etc. Also likely can't handle the high vibration environment of a nitro.
at 6:07, when you powered the radio controler you must have "plugged the battery to the system" as the H-1 with USB feed in only cannot send enough voltage to power the Receiver.
John, Thanks for the review and setup of the H1-GPS system. I'm a 75 year old kid and haven't flown my Trex 500 esp for several years due to arthritis issues. After your review I purchased a FW 450 v2 helicopter and I'm extremely pleased that I'm back enjoying my hobby. I would like to update my Trex 500 to the H1-GPS system. For mild flying what servos and esc would you recommend. I know the H1-GPS requires a higher voltage of 7.4 vdc. My current system is setup for 5vdc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Howdy Darrell, Glad to hear this technology has allowed you to get flying again. As I mentioned in the review video, that's the H1's single best attribute. As for your Trex 500ESP, I guess the first question is have you converted it to flybarless already? The H1 like every other FBL system only works with flybarless rotor heads. For powering the H1 and servo recommendations, there are an array of options at your disposal. You can keep the original ESC if you wanted and use an external BEC for example, or a dedicated RX battery. Servos same thing - several workable options to consider depending on what you are using right now along with what receiver you are running along with what radio system. Best to contact me through my website on my contact page ( www.rchelicopterfun.com/contact.html ) for more complex technical topics like this as I rarely see follow up questions in the comments section of TH-cam. But if your 500ESP is still fly-bared, then all that is moot unless you already have or plan to convert it to flybarless.
Great video John. I loved two of your books I bought...setup & tips for electric collective pitch rc helicopters and How to build training gear for RC helicopters. Between youtube, flight Sim S/W and your books I have taught myself to build and fly non 3D at an intermediate level. Now I just bought a used Trex 600E flybar chopper. Can I remove the existing gyro and install the H1 on the E600 without buying a flybarless head and run it with the existing flybar? I would only run the H1 in non 3D mode and use it basically as an emergency attitude recovery system while I gain experience on the E600. Eventually I would buy a flybarless head and dip my toe into 3D tricks using the H1 to bail me out of trouble. What do you think?
The H1 like almost all FBL units won't work with flybared heads; it must be used with flybarless. Also, the H1 is not a "bail out" or "rescue" unit. It won't work (at least well) in that capacity. If you want rescue, then get a proper FBL unit with that specific function such as an Ikon2, Bavarian Demon Axon, or Spirit.
Dear Mr.Salt. Thank you for very helpful videos on TH-cam!!! May I have a question, please? I´m struggling with one think. Usually I´m flying on left stick cyclic completely and on right stick gas with tail, as well. Normally it is mode3. But! On the H1 diagram (setup assistant) I have problem with correct stick moving (indication). With this mode3 are changed throttle with elevator - I mean when I move collective stick (pitch) the diagram indicate moving of elevator and reversed. Correctly goes it if I change the transmiter mode from 3 to 4. But in this point I have unfortunately pitch on the left stick. I have no idea, how to harmonize the correct moving between sticks and the diagram. I suppose when it is on diagram incorrectly, will the unit also in flight incorrectly work. Do You have any tip for me please? A big thank to you in advance, Vlastimil (please, sorry for my English)
Contact FlyWing tech support. I don't even know if you can change channel mapping within the H1 (I don't think you can). This to me would strictly be a computerized radio programming issue to remap the outputs for different stick modes.
I hope yoi are still monitoring this thread. Thank you for all the variable information that you have shared with us here. When you set your swash plate, do you do that at half throttle? Thank you.
Not sure what you mean by "set your swash plate". Set it to what? Your cyclic pitch range, collective pitch range or leveling it? If it's leveling you're referencing, as with all collective pitch helicopters and as shown in the video, it's leveled mechanically at mid point on the pitch curve. It has nothing to do with throttle output. With that said, the H1 setup wizard automatically sets the collective output to all swash servos at mid value (1500 micro seconds) so collective channel output value on the radio is not important at that step since the H1 overrides it. If your question was not related to leveling, please contact me on my website with technical questions like this since YT comment section is a poor medium for sorting technical issues and I rarely see second posted questions whereas I always see every email question and follow ups on my website: www.rchelicopterfun.com/
@John Salt thank you. You actually answered my question (your answer covered pretty much everything). I'm sorry I'm new at this, but your channel is very helpful to newbies. Thanks again.
John great video I have a problem with max an min pitch I can't get the numbers the same no matter what I do. Max pitch I get 12 NP but at Min only 8.5 what can I do to fix and what reason is it. And one servo I have to change to reverse that doesn't matter does it?
Hi John I like your video ...Don't know many times I watched it BUT I bought 2 H1 one for 470 and a 500X. Now I can't get them into the program which I think is due to orange 720 I have a DX9 radio and can't find any 9 ch Sbus made for spektrum any ideas of brand receivers I can use?
Hi John, Thank you for this video on the setup of the H1. I just purchased one to install on a flybarless TREX 500. Do you still use yours and do you know if their software has improved since this product first came out? Also you mentioned something about governor mode. I guess you can only use one gov mode headspeed ( I have a Castle Creations ESC)? The previous FBL unit was a Mikado Mini V-bar and I just wanted to try this out. Thank you, Michael
Hey John, I know you have quite a few Ebooks to help with Heli setup. I was wondering do you have one that included 45+90 (H4) swash setup. I'm in the process of setup up a helicopter with this kind of swash and I'm really struggling with the geometry at the moment.
Hey john...great video and informative....Just now thinking of buying two of these H1's. I want place H1 in a 500X Align and a XL power 550. Do I need to readjust my ESC for voltage output . The BEC output voltage should be to 7.2V. and other question is the Aircraft title should be normal airplane or helicopter. Not good with this technology stuff. Still learning? Thanx a lot
Thanks for the intensive review, in your earlier review of this item you said it could be implemented on a gas powered helicopter but I don't see how that is possible since there's no input for governor sensor for a stabilized throttle control , or do you think otherwise?
Many gas and nitro helis use stand alone governors to control the throttle servo (such as the Futaba GV-1 governor). All that is required is a fixed throttle PWM signal output which the H1 has. Also, you don't necessarily need a governor at all on nitro or gas. We flew them for years without such technology by using creative throttle servo to carburetor linkage arm geometry before computerized radios gave us the power of throttle curves which worked much better. Of course, the H1 gives no such ability with only two single fixed throttle output signals and would have serious limitations when used with IC. In the review, I was merely stating the H1 specs which indicate its compatibility with nitro. I would certainly not condone ever using the H1 with any fuel powered heli nor do I think it would work well for the reasons I just mentioned. Who knows if the H1 can even handle the high vibration environment of a nitro or gasser? That would be another big concern. Again, I was just stating the specs in the manual when I mentioned it worked with nitro. In theory it will, but in practice I would personally never install it on a large fuel powered machine. Moreover, it's bad enough that people with no collective pitch flying skills can take to the sky with this thing on an electric. The last thing our hobby needs is a bunch of fuel powered helicopters being flown by people who don't know what they are doing. Good bye hobby.
John buena explicación una pregunta hay un video del flywing H1 que la programación con futaba t10j la hacen en modo helicoptero. No entiendo puedes decirme si es normal o mejor en modo avión. Gracias
You'll be waiting a long time since the H1 doesn't support GPS route planning - thank goodness. May as well write the final epitaph to our hobby the day powerful and dangerous collective pitch RC helicopters are flying autonomous GPS routes with no pilot input. It's bad enough mindless drones are capable of that.
Does H1 have the option for setting the tail pitch at zero degree when throttle hold switch on the transmitter is activated for auto rotation or is it set in the transmitter? Thanks for the thorough instructional video.
Great video and super cool product. I have a NX8 and I know they have 10 mixing channels. Will the Fly Wing H1 work with it using an orange 9 channel receiver? I want to put it in my Align 470LM. Thanks for any advice/guidance you can give.
Hi there john, I am new to flying Helicopters, but have been heavily involved in racing RC off-road 8th scale since the early 90's. i have also built and flown FPV quadcopters. My question is about the voice speaking your radio switch positions. I use an Frsky 2019 X9d-SE running EdgeTX. My radio does speak some things, but yours appears to speak EVERYTHING. Is this just sound files put on the sdcard? If so, where do i get them? If not, how do I get the speaking set up? Thanks for this video. I had an old Trex450 on the shelf that I stuck an H1 into. It did NOT work with the original ESC, motor wouldn't arm, so I put an Emax 60amp running blheli into it and now it spins the motor normally. While I am going over the setup 1 more time, I came across your video. (They actually linked to it in the setup software, Click "Tutorial" on the sensor page) I also purchased your setup guide for newbs like me. Aside from this chopper, I purchased a new TB40 kit, rotorflightF7 controller, Frsky Neuron2 60amp ESC, and a set of KST servos. I want to fly the old chopper first, then build the new one. Simply so I have confidence in my ability to set the swashplate properly. Thank you for the tutorial and the eBook, QuadRacer31
I use the "Amber" voice pack on all my radios running Open/EdgeTX . I downloaded mine from OpenTX University's website. I'm sure there are also downloads in the Open & Edge TX forums and in GitHub and Amber is not the only voice pack out there as you likely know. Keeping in mind regardless of which voice pack you use, you have to program your radio to activate those different voice call outs and sound files if you want more than the few that are automatically enabled out of the box. If you're unsure how to program voice call-outs, I cover it in part 1 of the OpenTX for helicopters video: th-cam.com/video/XdFOndPG7xo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vM0ka943r2Pj-_D4 Video Chapter is titled "Programming Voice Call Outs" Thanks for the eBook patronage 👍
I enjoy it very much. The way to fly Spektrum protocol is with an External Multi-Protocol module. If you update to Edge TX OS in the Radio, and run the multi-protocol module with the latest firmware via serial interface with the radio, you can even access all the latest Spektrum telemetry RX's along with forward programming access on their SMART stuff. Lots of info on the Multi-Module website and their GitHub threads. www.multi-module.org/
You are very good, thankyou for your work. Could I just ask. On the spekrum sbus do you still need at least 9 channels. Even though you only use 1? Actual channel..Thankyou Fly wing H1 ..sbus receiver DSMX
"You only use 1?" Nope, the minimum number of channels to control *any* collective pitch RC helicopter is 6, regardless of stabilization type; be it mechanical (flybar) electronic (FBL) or skill-less GPS. www.rchelicopterfun.com/helicopter-radios.html As for the H1 system, as stated, it needs a minimum of 8 channels and 9 if you want full functionality.
Hi. I am using DX9 transmitter. Everything is setup properly except that I can't seem to activate my channels 8 and 9 for circle/figure eight and inverted flight. Will you be able to give me advice on these. Thank you.
Hello and thank you for useful video! I have calibrated the FC indoor and outdoor. It stopped blinking red in both cases. There is no warnings in desktop app. But when I try to arm it - it flashes yellow, even there are 16 sats and HDOP 0.78 (indoor and outdoor). No low voltage. What I should do to get blinking green instead yellow and what could cause this problem? Thank you!
@@Rchelicopterfun Already did it. They said to reset the FC via the configurator and to install new model and to make adjustments again. Will try it this way.
Hi now I can conect and config with mi laptop , but I think the tail gyro is wrong, because correct to wrong side... with my helicopter is on, and I can full control with my radio, when take the helicopter with my hands and turn tu righ, the tail nove to the right side, then I turn the heli to de left, the tail move to left. I think that is a problem... should correct to the opposite side so that it can counteract the turning force of the main rotor
Hey John... me again sorry to be a pest but what should the radio switches be set on before calibration of GPS and H1... And what does the girl in video mention set for (stars)
last one john and thx. have you chk the swash plate before flying if level up when you tilt forward or sideward by hand. its hard to tell on gps mode except 3d mode and tail response.
Hi John . Great instructional video . I fly a Roban 600 EC145 ( T-Rex 550x mechanics ) thanks to your tutorial it flown a dream first time no issues I just followed your instructions. Now I need a little advice for my new build A Roban 700 Apache. Almost there with it but. I’m using a castle edge 160 ESC ( no internal BEC ) and external BEC pro that has two input leads . I know these can and should go into the ESC port of the H1 using a Y splitter but my question is what about the ESC throttle wire , can I ( using another Y splitter ) in essence running parallel to the BEC . Also would I need to disconnect the red wire from the ESC . Hope you can help . Great stuff
Sorry no idea on BEC pro. I use stand alone RX batteries on all my large machines. As far as I know, ESC connectivity would be the same however since there is no BEC in the Castle HV ESCs so you don't have to remove the red wire from the throttle lead. Of course always confirm with Castle's wiring diagram or contact their tech support if you are unsure, in the off chance the 160 is different from the rest. I've only run the 120HV since these big Robans sip current and will rarely pull over 60 amps if you manage your cyclic and collective energy well.
Hi John Salt. The video is awesome, a step-by-step instructions. The best I've ever seen thus far. I just received my H1 unit. And I noticed mine is different from yours most of my writing is in Chinese. And my GPS cable is short, not long like yours. Where exactly can I get you're one from I would love to use that unit on my other helis with the long GPS cord..
I don't fly Spektrum anymore. Setup would be the same however. Set the channel outputs & directions to produce the required inputs in the setup wizard, teach the wizard the channel throws and centering points & store them, follow the setup steps in the wizard to the letter, double & triple check, go flying. 🙂
Love the videos and very informative, question I have for you is what RX are you using? I have a Archer R6 and trying to get it to work with this system and I'm using a Tandem X20S radio. If or what RX do you recommend for this setup on my Algin 450L? All help or info would be great.
Hi John. Was wondering if you have ever done a video tutorial on setting up Open TX with an Ikon flybarless controller. I have a RadioMaster TX16S and an Ikon Mini2 that I'm trying to set up on my Oxy2 Sport. Take Care
I cover the basics in my swash ebook, but even better is to follow the IKON FBL setup wizard to the letter. It takes you by the hand and walks you through the entire process from start to finish. In the past decade of of setting up FLB systems now, there is no substitute better than the setup wizards in my opinion. They make the process simple and fairly goof proof.
I have the FW450V2.5 and it flew very well with the stock transmitter and receiver. I have converted to run on my Open TX FRSKY x9D+ Taranis with a X8R receiver. I got it to fly in the GPS mode but it bobs forward and backwards pretty badly even in a hover. What adjustments do you suggest to get it to fly smoothly? Thanks - Vic
As I state, you need an S-Bus signal output from the RX. I don't know a thing about the R920X; if has an S-Bus output it will work, if it doesn't it won't.
No, I said no such thing. I said to CHECK the MANUAL to see what RX outputs will work with it. I know for 100% certainty it works with S-bus since that's how I have mine hooked up as per the manual. I have no idea if a Spektrum's satellite RX's PPM signal would be compatible or not. I would venture to say it isn't since DSM is not mentioned anywhere in the manual, but that is just an educated guess. Of course If you have a DSM2/X RX that has an S-bus output (I'm not a Spektrum user anymore, but I think some of their newer RX's have an S-bus output port & some aftermarket ones), then that would work. Best to contact Fly Wing with compatibility questions like this - I can only relay what is stated in the manual and what is working in my application... S-bus.
I cover it on my web site in detail on my "Are RC Helicopters Hard To Fly" page: www.rchelicopterfun.com/are-rc-helicopters-hard-to-fly.html Quick summation: Main reason is they are extremely dangerous for the exact reason you stated. It's one thing having an entitled droner flying a harmless quad copter without any skill or knowledge, it's a totally different story when that same type of person has a 5hp helicopter spinning a 1.5 meter diameter rotor disc. I've seen way more high energy crashes with these GPS systems on helicopters in the hand of morons than we ever saw before with normal mechanical and electronic flybar stabilization. It's why they are no longer allowed at our field.
@@Rchelicopterfun Totally agree, I usually take mine with me when I go flying my gliders, slope soaring mainly, it makes a nice change for half an hour while batteries are re charging, usually I am the only one around now with the size restrictions so don't get tempted to show off. cheers.
John I'm having trouble calibrating GPS and H1...how do you keep from getting tangled up with H1 cable cause offline doesn't work well for me. Thanks for listening
You mean the USB cable during compass calibration? If so, I never had any issue getting tangled up while calibrating the magnetic compasses; you just turn the the heli along each of the 3 axis the opposite way the same number of times on each axis so the cable never tangles.
Nope. I think it says somewhere in the manual or on Flywing's site the approximate distance from where you calibrate the magnetometers where you have to do it again (100 km seems to ring a bell) but don't quote me on that. I've never had to recalibrate at a different flying location, but all my flying spots are within 25 km of home.
Another thing is, how do you stop the wobbling problem in your Vieo LOCK MOM ? Which settings do you change? I have same problems with the back/Tail going up and down.
Like any cyclic wobble, it's tuning and experimentation. Play with the gain, the head speeds, and the head dampening. Even blade bolt torque can affect cyclic wobble. In short, all the usual stuff.
Hello Mr John Salt! congratulations for your work! -can you help me? I can't start the engine in GPS mode ... sticks from the throttle are calibrated to a minimum of 1000 ... I re-programmed the radio (taranis x9d-plus) and I don't know what else to do ... please can you give me some tips? thanks!
Very difficult, impossible actually, to diagnose H1 functionality issues remotely. Way too many variables to sort through. Only thing that jumps out at me is you mentioned throttle stick calibration. The H1 doesn't use a throttle stick output from the radio. Channel 7's output alone turns the throttle signal on or off. The single speed throttle output level is set with the throttle output setting in the H1 setup wizard. Both sticks also have to be held in the bottom right corners (as shown in the review video I did on this thing) before it will allow a throttle output - very much like a quad copter ESC arming procedure.
Hi John many thanks again for this great video. Just used it to set my Alzrc 505 with the H1. Everything seams OK, but not sure about the fail safe on channel 5. I have a Futaba 16sz, the instructions in the H1 manual have me confused. Any ideas. Also when entering the software and start with a new heli and work you way through until the end. You you enter the soft ware again you cannot go through these settings again you must start all over again. Many thanks John
If you have channel 5 output setup correctly, you will see the channel 5 indicator in the setup wizard moving accordingly. So as long as you are seeing the 3 different selections (3D, GPS, RTL) come up when you move your 3 position channel 5 toggle, you know you have your channel 5 setup correctly. Since I don't fly with Futaba, I however have no idea how you set your failsafe channel positions so it defaults to the RTL channel 5 output if RF signal is lost. That would be in your Futaba manual how to set fixed channel outputs when the RX goes into failsafe. Yep, as I said in both the review and this setup video, one of the biggest limitations with the setup wizard program is there is no way to save the parameters, so if you go back into setup new heli, it wipes everything clear and you have to start all over again.
Hi John, we many H1 flyers encountered many different issue. not sure you still have it with you. would be interested to see H1 interner and what type GPS module they using? Found it quite similar to M8N pro with 6pin, just not sure the pin layout is it the same.
@@Rchelicopterfun The main selling point that H1 attract us is the GPS positioning. It locked the heli made it so stable and easier in hovering and flying. 😅
I cover my basic openTX heli foundation setup in this one: th-cam.com/video/XdFOndPG7xo/w-d-xo.html It of course had to be modified slightly for the H1 due to the difference with pitch & throttle curves - ie. they are not used.
Hi John, Im a Spektrum user and really want to try one of these. Do you think a AR7700 would work? It has a PPM slot. I wont hold you to it just asking what you think.
John, great video...were you able to get rid of that tail bounce (from the review video) by reducing the gain on the parameters page? If so, what did you set it to?
Yes, I covered that at the end of the review video including what my final settings were. Those final gain settings I show at the end of that video are of course specific to this particular heli, the mass of the heli, the blade spinning mass, and the particular head speed I'm running. Lots of variables involved when tuning the gain values on any FBL system. As I said at the end of the review video, my final settings were a compromise. I can get it to fly well in 3D mode or GPS mode but not both. Without the ability separate the cyclic pitch & roll axis gain settings, or even better, separate them and allow access to the individual PID gains, I think the best we can hope for is a compromise seeing the setup wizard is also a compromise in the limited adjustability is allows. That or set it up for one or the other.
Hello John. I have the Flywing H1 for my T-Rex 470 LM I made all the settings on my helicopter and the radio control but when I want to take off the engine does not turn. My remote control is the Spektrum NX 10. There is certainly a button to assign to activate the motor but I don't know. Tutorials on TH-cam do not explain very well how to set up the H1 with Spektrum radio controls. I have spent many hours trying to get the engine to run without success. Do you have an idea? Since I fly with OpenTX and had this test/review unit configured to OpenTX, I really have no idea what's involved with Spektrum. Throttle run is mapped out on the H1 to Channel 7, so presuming you can assign a 1000us to 2000us switched output on your NX assigned to channel 7 and your RX plays well with the H1 in terms of channel mapping, I don't see why it's not working; but then again, I'm not Flywing tech support. Suggest contacting them.
Yes I have, very little differences. My two main issues still there: 1. No way to save your setups. 2. Haven't separated cyclic gain adjustment to pitch & roll axis.
Hallo John, can you tell me where you get the long cable for the GPS. I ordered 2 H1 both with only 10cm. Can you send me the link where to buy? Or can I take any unschield cable with 6 wire? Or cut it and make my own extension?
The one I got from Banggood in review is the exact same one I linked to in the description. It came with the longer cable out of the box as shown in the review; so if they are shorter now, I have no idea why or what options are available for extensions - contact FlyWing.
@@Rchelicopterfun Thank You John I must think now. I contact Fly Wing for that with at moment no answer. I will arrange a new German Manual for their models and I am waiting for the Scaler and FW450ii second version now. But nowhere to get that longer cable! Thats bad at all.
Thank you very much John for this excellent tutorial I have a couple of questions. In the initial configuration of the radio control, do you select heli or airplane? and if you select heli is h1? another question. Do you need a 9 channel receiver to program the invert? And the last, dual rates, throttle curve and pitch curve must not be configured on the radio control? Thank you for your help
after connecting orange R920X for connecting to spektrum. do i need to connect any other satellite reciver in SAT 1? coz in joystick stroke calibration is disabled and says RX NO SIGNAL.
Once again, and as I clearly state in the video & what is stated in the instructions - you DON'T USE PITCH or THROTTLE CURVES. You use a linear output for channel 3 to give a symmetrical +/- collective range (-12 to +12 in the case of this heli). Throttle output is dictated by what is set in the H1 Setup wizard.
Hi John, i have question, i get a slight toilet bowl effect when in gps mode about 1 foot diameter, what would cause this, it flys great in all flight modes
Hello John, can you also list the transmitters which will work directly with H1 without the need for extra receivers like AR7700 incase if we use spektrum. I dont mind buy a new transmitter..which one would u recommend for H1 directly plug and play?
Transmitter model, brand, or protocol plays little roll in compatibility. As I state in the video and what is in the H1 owner's manual, it's the RX (receiver) that communicates with the H1 that is important. That RX needs either an S-Bus or PPM output to communicate the signals to the H1. The H1 has no internal RX, so you must use an external RX with the H1 - no exceptions! I'm not a Spektrum user anymore so I have no idea of which Speky receivers have S-Bus or PPM output ports but I do know they exist. One example is given in the description but there may be more (both Spektrum & aftermarket DSM2/X receivers). As for the DX8, it will work fine with the H1 (with the correct RX), but you will be limited with 8 channels if you want the invert function since it operates on channel 9.
hi john, please let me know why the throttle stick movements are not recognized. the H1 is still blinking red. it should be solid to purple right? but its not. i am now using orange receiver as stated by some.

I want to say thank you for a very informative instruction. Your instruction made it so easy for me to set my flywing H1 for my Trex 500. 🙏
Glad it helped
Very informative and helpful in a no-nonsense style of instruction. I have an H1 on the way to install on a trex 470l. This answered many questions for me. Thanks!
Glad it helped
Another Great video John! Thanks for sharing your passion and knowledge with us. Your videos are always Fantastic and everything is covered, no loose ends as you never leave us hanging. You always cover any questions we may have!
My pleasure
showing the head leaving is also very helpful thanks!
Thanks John, this will be really useful when my H1 gets off the slow boat
Glad to help
Great video, many thanks. I have just received my H1.
Enjoy it
I just talk about rc stuff and my fam and girl think it’s for kids. They should watch this vid. 😎
DMA Collective is: Advance compensation of collective pitch to tail
Thanks so much.
@@Rchelicopterfun so, what does this mean? How will adjusting this from zero affect flight controls?
This would be good for someone that would like you said lost their ability to fly, Thanks for your video's.
Thanks for the complete details setup video.

Hi John, rather than trying to bind a Spectrum radio to the H1 what radio is automatically compatible to the H1?
I cover inverted progression skills (actually Bert does) on day 11 "How to Fly Helicopter Aerobatics in the flight school section of my website: www.rchelicopterfun.com/how-to-fly-3d-helicopter.html
If you need electronic help aids, then get a FBL system that has inverted rescue auto-level such as the Ikon. The H1 won't work as a rescue system, it will likely crash.
I have a question John when doing the tail did you end up reversing left tail stick tail or left tail right stick
Thnx, for the set-up video, John. 👍
You bet
I did all what you said but the helicopter doesn't want to take off anymore it's a 450 thank you for helping me
what I would need is a function to set up a box on my flying field, where the heli can't leave the box. so the H1 would detect if the heli is about to leave the box and then take over control to stop it from leaving the box. especially of course when it is about to hit the ground.
@@Rchelicopterfun copy thats a big 10-4 thanks john i really appreciate your help
Thank you John. If I find the solution for my problem I will let you know. We appreciate you!
@@raulmayoral6861 Hi: I have a JR radio and I have the same problem of mapping between Collective and Elevator. Did you solve it? Thanks
Thanks John,
Very helpful video. I am trying the H1 in a trex 450l. I am to the point where I arm the heli, I get the blinking green light. When I throw motor switch nothing happens. I sure would appreciate any suggestions you might have. I know motor and ecs are good bypassing the H1 and just using tx and receiver.
Thanks
I also have this problem! I can't solve it, could someone help? thanks!
good video! .. I have a t-rex 600e What helicopter I need to chose in the select helicopter config ?
great video, got me through the setup super quick, thank you.
Glad it helped
hello and congratulations for your tutorial ...
Nope, powered with USB only
John,
Thanks for the review and setup of the H1-GPS system.
Hi
Can you help
Have you the paramètres for Trex 600
The swash exp
And the swash gain
Thank you very much
Great video John.
@@Rchelicopterfun Hello, ok thanks. I will do it. Have a nice day.
Thanks again for a great video! Could you provide a little more detail about battery dimensions ? Thank you.

John great video I have a problem with max an min pitch I can't get the numbers the same no matter what I do. Max pitch I get 12 NP but at Min only 8.5 what can I do to fix and what reason is it. And one servo I have to change to reverse that doesn't matter does it?
Hi Bob, No idea without seeing it in person - too many variables. Most likely poor mechanical setup, but that is just a presumption.
Hello friend, can the Compass calibration be done indoors or do we have to go to the field to do it?
Hi John,
Thank you for this video on the setup of the H1. I just purchased one to install on a flybarless TREX 500.
Do you still use yours and do you know if their software has improved since this product first came out?
Also you mentioned something about governor mode. I guess you can only use one gov mode headspeed ( I have a Castle Creations ESC)? The previous FBL unit was a Mikado Mini V-bar and
I just wanted to try this out.
Thank you,
Michael
I didn't use much more than a month before putting a good quality standard FBL unit back on so I have no idea if they have changed the setup software?
Hey John, I know you have quite a few Ebooks to help with Heli setup. I was wondering do you have one that included 45+90 (H4) swash setup. I'm in the process of setup up a helicopter with this kind of swash and I'm really struggling with the geometry at the moment.
@ConnorCain25 - Sorry, I have no direct experience with 4 servo, H4 swashplates.
Gracias
waiting for a route programming video
thanks
You'll be waiting a long time since the H1 doesn't support GPS route planning - thank goodness. May as well write the final epitaph to our hobby the day powerful and dangerous collective pitch RC helicopters are flying autonomous GPS routes with no pilot input. It's bad enough mindless drones are capable of that.
Nice for sharing men. Thank you
Does H1 have the option for setting the tail pitch at zero degree when throttle hold switch on the transmitter is activated for auto rotation or is it set in the transmitter? Thanks for the thorough instructional video.
Heading lock - not required - done automatically.

Hi there john,
I am new to flying Helicopters, but have been heavily involved in racing RC off-road 8th scale since the early 90's. i have also built and flown FPV quadcopters.
Thank you for the tutorial and the eBook,
QuadRacer31
I use the "Amber" voice pack on all my radios running Open/EdgeTX . I downloaded mine from OpenTX University's website. I'm sure there are also downloads in the Open & Edge TX forums and in GitHub and Amber is not the only voice pack out there as you likely know.
Keeping in mind regardless of which voice pack you use, you have to program your radio to activate those different voice call outs and sound files if you want more than the few that are automatically enabled out of the box.
If you're unsure how to program voice call-outs, I cover it in part 1 of the OpenTX for helicopters video: th-cam.com/video/XdFOndPG7xo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vM0ka943r2Pj-_D4
Video Chapter is titled "Programming Voice Call Outs"

Hi John.
How do you like that transmitter and can I use spektrum dsmx receivers with it?
Thank you 😊
I enjoy it very much.
On the spekrum sbus
do you still need
at least 9 channels.

Actual channel..Thankyou
Fly wing H1 ..sbus receiver DSMX
"You only use 1?" Nope, the minimum number of channels to control *any* collective pitch RC helicopter is 6, regardless of stabilization type; be it mechanical (flybar) electronic (FBL) or skill-less GPS. www.rchelicopterfun.com/helicopter-radios.html
As for the H1 system, as stated, it needs a minimum of 8 channels and 9 if you want full functionality.
@@Rchelicopterfun Thankyou John. Your videos are brilliant so easy to follow.

Thank you John . Very helpful. Top man
can you show how to setup frsky radio to helicopters, nothing on fros on X10s

Hi John Salt. The video is awesome, a step-by-step instructions. The best I've ever seen thus far. I just received my H1 unit. And I noticed mine is different from yours most of my writing is in Chinese. And my GPS cable is short, not long like yours. Where exactly can I get you're one from I would love to use that unit on my other helis with the long GPS cord..
I have a link to the exact unit I got in the description.
Another great video John..Thank you. Is it possible for you to make a video on setting the H1 up using Spektrum?

I list the basic items to check for cyclic pitch oscilation in the description.
Nice tutorial video. I can I use my jr 11X radio on flywing h1? And orange r920x receiver.
As I state, you need an S-Bus signal output from the RX. I don't know a thing about the R920X; if has an S-Bus output it will work, if it doesn't it won't.
i got a new x10s horus, could you show how to setup frsky radio and what type of rx you like for helicopter.....thank
so you say (that you know) that I could also connect spektrum (dsm / dsmx protocol). Thanks again
S-bus.
will you be reviewing the new H1 unit with the smaller GPS unit.
cheers.
Nope, hate these things and we no longer allow them at our field.
@@Rchelicopterfun any real reason, or just that they make new fliers think they can fly a helicopter.
I cover it on my web site in detail on my "Are RC Helicopters Hard To Fly" page:
www.rchelicopterfun.com/are-rc-helicopters-hard-to-fly.html
Quick summation: Main reason is they are extremely dangerous for the exact reason you stated.
@@Rchelicopterfun Totally agree, I usually take mine with me when I go flying my gliders, slope soaring mainly, it makes a nice change for half an hour while batteries are re charging, usually I am the only one around now with the size restrictions so don't get tempted to show off. cheers.
I need help ... my H1 With GPS I can no t connect to the computer and recover at the same time..
Which Frsky receiver do you use with the H1 module ? How do you connect them togenther? Thank you
In the description - S-BUS connection.
thanks for the great tutorial!!
Glad you found it useful 🙂
John I'm having trouble calibrating GPS and H1...how do you keep from getting tangled up with H1 cable cause offline doesn't work well for me. Thanks for listening
You mean the USB cable during compass calibration? If so, I never had any issue getting tangled up while calibrating the magnetic compasses; you just turn the the heli along each of the 3 axis the opposite way the same number of times on each axis so the cable never tangles.
Hi John great video do you have to calibrate the helicopter with a computer at every location you go to thanks
@@Rchelicopterfun thanks for the info John really appreciated

Interested in buying a new 800 size helicopter and new controller. Would you be interested in doing a complete setup to bring it to a RTF ?
Another thing is, how do you stop the wobbling problem in your Vieo LOCK MOM ? Which settings do you change? I have same problems with the back/Tail going up and down.
Like any cyclic wobble, it's tuning and experimentation. Play with the gain, the head speeds, and the head dampening. Even blade bolt torque can affect cyclic wobble. In short, all the usual stuff.
Puedes compartir fotos de las conexiones… no consigo que mi h1 funcione aún … el receptor no recibe energía y por ende no hay control de radio
Can u set it up where there is no 3d mode? Going in a scale helicopter
Thanks again for all of your help. John
Hi John, we many H1 flyers encountered many different issue. not sure you still have it with you. would be interested to see H1 interner and what type GPS module they using? Found it quite similar to M8N pro with 6pin, just not sure the pin layout is it the same.
@Alex Bong RC Fun Land - Best way I know to avoid H1 issues is to get rid of it and put in a proper FBL system 😄
@@Rchelicopterfun The main selling point that H1 attract us is the GPS positioning. It locked the heli made it so stable and easier in hovering and flying. 😅
Where's the fun in that 😄
@@Rchelicopterfun still fun, just less stress on crash it…hahaha
Hi John, do you have any idea how I have the H1 connect to the JETI REX 10EX ? I try to use the H1 on my Goblin 500
No idea; I'm not FlyWing tech support, suggest contacting them.
Hi do you have video how did you setup your radio transmitter for this one
I cover my basic openTX heli foundation setup in this one:
th-cam.com/video/XdFOndPG7xo/w-d-xo.html
It of course had to be modified slightly for the H1 due to the difference with pitch & throttle curves - ie. they are not used.
Do you pick airplane or helicopter model on your radio to set up h1 gyro, because i saw another video he choose airplane to set a heli
Hi John, Im a Spektrum user and really want to try one of these. Do you think a AR7700 would work? It has a PPM slot. I wont hold you to it just asking what you think.
I honesty don't know. On paper it should, but in reality??? Personally I look for an aftermarket DSMX receiver with an S-Bus output.
Franck from France
Since I fly with OpenTX and had this test/review unit configured to OpenTX, I really have no idea what's involved with Spektrum. Throttle run is mapped out on the H1 to Channel 7, so presuming you can assign a 1000us to 2000us switched output on your NX assigned to channel 7 and your RX plays well with the H1 in terms of channel mapping, I don't see why it's not working; but then again, I'm not Flywing tech support. Suggest contacting them.
@@Rchelicopterfun I must to turn left stick and right stick down right to make led flashing. It works now!
I see they have updated the program firmware on the H1 since you made the video. I was wondering if it was any better, if you had checked it out John
Yes I have, very little differences. My two main issues still there: 1. No way to save your setups. 2. Haven't separated cyclic gain adjustment to pitch & roll axis.
@@Rchelicopterfun it's still of little use then, still a robot in the sky, thank you for the reply John
Every single question you asked here is answered in the video and in the manual.
after connecting everything to the h1 heli all servo's they make a very strange sound and i can't control them. what could it be caused by?
Would it work with a futaba 7 channel radio, just wouldn't have inverted flight or ?? Thanks
8ch minimum.
after connecting orange R920X for connecting to spektrum. do i need to connect any other satellite reciver in SAT 1? coz in joystick stroke calibration is disabled and says RX NO SIGNAL.
how to configure the radio? I put it in H1 and the tHR curve and the PIT curve as it puts it. Thank you
Once again, and as I clearly state in the video & what is stated in the instructions - you DON'T USE PITCH or THROTTLE CURVES.
Likely magnetic compass calibration, but I'm not a GPS flight controller expert.
How did you manage to do a soft start? Can one program the ESC via the H1?
ESC start characteristic are through ESC programming alone. Nothing to do with the H1 flight controller.
Well done mate
You don't need to mix here throttl-pitch?
mixing will make the device FlyWing H1?
thanks for the video. great !! I have an 8 channel radio. which function will i not be able to use with only 8 channels? thank you
