You know one thing I've barely seen anyone discuss? If Ashad's a clone in this story, it means the Master cloned his human body, converted it into a Cyberman, then took the time to corrode and wreck the Cyber suit so it would look exactly like the original Ashad.
Yeah, I was wondering about that...Let alone WHY Ashad would work with the Master anyway (although mind control works there, I guess). At this point, I just handwave this away, like when Jason regenerated into his body...complete with hockey mask, ripped clothes and machete! Where'd all that come from?? Oh, who cares, it's Iconic!
If the doctor's daughter can come out fully clothed then anything is possible.

The Master does enjoy his ridiculously over-elaborate plans. His whole plan to become PM is ridiculously complicated when you think about it, when he could have just invaded with his army of billions of flying cyborg globes. And if he wanted to be PM he could have just won a leadership contest.
Rasputin being a time lord honestly makes too much sense within historical context with all the assassination attempts.
I found myself wondering when the MasterDoctor was getting in Yaz's face like that whether "I am The Doctor now" was supposed to be telling her something deeper. He certainly looks her up and down before recoiling. In the context of wanting to ruin The Doctor's legacy, it makes sense to take with him the companion who loved Thirteen.
I think it made sense for Yaz to leave because the story showed very well how much she had almost outgrown the Doctor. She was smart enough to recognise a new version of the Doctor won’t mean the same to her but will mean as much to someone else.

But the Doctor wasn't necessarily distinguishing between the different kind of scenarios that could lead to a Dalek turning against its own kind. And there was also Dalek Caan who decided to screw over the Daleks and Davros after seeing all of time and stuff .

@@defrostedrobot77 I think there is a distinction as the Doctor is right, a Dalek defecting on its own without any intervention is unprecedented. Whereas previous examples there was always some kind of intervention!
I thought that as well but both the traitor Dalek and Rusty both have serious damage to their casings
Gotta say, I did love her final line, I thought it really did fit well with what little of her character we did come to know (Wait, did the Doctor actually say that her HEART, singular, was full of love?? Hmm...)

I did really like Dan's departure from the episode, but I do think it's funny that the near death experience is what causes him to change perspective despite having a groundhog day Dalek story only 2 stories ago.
Edit: I think it was a massive missed opportunity to not have Dan leave with Diane, as they could have easily implied that Dan began living with Diane so the whole house gag can stay in the episode without being out of touch.
Tbf he was awere it was a time loop so he was pretty confident
Feel like there's one easy fix to two issues you had with this episode.
The Doctor says that there's one chance at bringing her back, but it's risky - so have Yaz be heavily injured whilst bringing The Doctor back, that way The Doctor can start to see where Dan was coming from at the beginning of the episode and tell Yaz she refuses to gamble Yaz's life any more because she loves her too dearly, they go on their ice cream date and Yaz is dropped off at Companions Anonymous.
One small rewrite that both gives The Doctor a reason to leave Yaz behind, whilst also paying off the danger of de-generating The Doctor.
Chibs missed a trick with the Master's Siberian hide-out. After all, he reminds us that he'd "ingested the Cyberium", and I guess the plural of Cyberium would be... Cyberia.

I really like how they actually integrated the Timeless Child arc without actually using much dialogue for it. The AI hologram automatically accepted the Fugitive Doctor as another form of the Doctor, and acted accordingly. The Fugitive Doctor, and all other pre-Hartnell forms, are part of her now, and she can't stay around to find out the whole story, which is a very nice mirror to her actual upcoming regeneration and her final lines. Regeneration stories are hard in that people don't want their favourite Doctor to leave, and will hold it against the new Doctor. Having the Doctor actually mirror that struggle creates a sense of empathy from the writers that previous regen stories didn't really have, IMO.
Overall, I don't really care if this episode can be picked apart 1000 times, because it was honest about it. I've never watched a Doctor Who episode so clearly full of love and respect for its characters, history, cast, and crew.
I don't think it ever did something for the sake of it. He brought back Ashad only for him to be a generic Cyber-Leader, but his new death at the hands of Tegan was extremely fitting. Frankenstein's Monster being struck down by the very lightning he's using to forge his own monster.
i like how you start the yaz section saying "this was her best outing as a companion" and then as you talk you come to the conclusion she still didn't do much of anything at all
Yaz just needed one or two more lines. I think it's heavily implied she loved Thirteen specifically the way Rose loved Ten (romantically) and knew the personality and body of Thirteen was going away. Yaz had also met the former companions which gave her a broader perspective on being a Companion. Just a couple more lines for her in the script could have clarified this. I do think Mandip's performance was great though.
Rose stuck around through 9-10, up until universes literally sperated them. Yaz just peacing out felt unbelievable to me, if it was that she's so well adjusted that she chose to leave the tardis on her own terms because she felt the next doctor wouldn't be HER doctor, they should have showed that.
I was really hoping that we would get a Proper Body Swap Between the thirteenth doctor and the master were Jodie Whittaker would be acting like the Master.
The only reason I was thinking that they weren't doing that was because it might confuse and scare younger kids watching.
yes YESSSS.
A "body swap" storyline where the Master transfers his mind into her body and the actress now has to play the Master pretending to be the Doctor. Even though that's been done a million times, that still would've been a cool thing to see: the Master trying to convince Yaz it's still the Doctor, and Yaz getting more and more suspicious.
And maybe the Doctor is now in the Master's body and has to play the Master CORRECTLY or the Cybermen and Daleks will know and kill her immediately. So she has to find ways to look evil without actually letting the Master's army hurt anyone.
and I'm 100% stealing this from an episode of Buffy:
The Master, since he's got to keep pretending to be good as the Doctor, starts getting this crisis of conscience that ends with him reacting without thinking and saving someone's life. And when the Doctor finally comes to switch them back, he freaks out because being evil was easy before, but now that he knows what it means to be good, how can he enjoy evil again? And if he can't enjoy it anymore, then he wants to stay in her body and keep being good.
so then they have to deal with that somehow.
And on the flip side, the Doctor is faced with more and more difficult situations trying not to be evil without getting herself killed. Until it reaches a point where she has to let someone die, because if she saves them, the Daleks will know who she is and kill her and the other person anyway, and then she won't be able to save everyone else. And this begins to destroy her value of morality because she sees it as a selfish and calculating decision, so how could she ever call herself a hero again?
We could even see some of the "Destroyer of Worlds" Doctor coming through as she falls farther into the role of the Master.
Without a doubt, this was both Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall’s episode. I’m so pleased they both got to go out on such a fantastic episode.
Her call for "more time" just felt like a call back to David Tennant's departure, but I genuinely hadn't thought about the meta aspect Mr. T points out here, which makes it land a lot better for me!
I feel like Tegan was way too upset about not seeing the Doctor for someone who left after having had enough of her travels with the Doctor.

Next to her being held captive, it is genuinely shocking the number of times Thirteen has been choked. I can recall four off the top of my head.
The most glaring plothole is why the doctor allowed herself to be captured by the Daleks when she could have simply allowed them to shoot her and destroyed them with the regeneration energy and escaped. The doctor being effectively immortal makes the threat of death zero. I was hoping some of the problems of the timeless child would be addressed but as the video notes that was entirely skipped over. The use of the hologram to include various Doctors was a great idea. It was an interesting choice to honor the original series after making much of it incoherent.

32:07 I think this actually makes sense, it's just one of the many things where the reasoning could be a bit more apparent than pure subtext. Yaz has realised that companions end up being left behind at some point, so when the Doctor says she wants to be alone to regenerate, Yaz realises that this *could* be it and she might never see the Doctor again. I take the "one last trip" line to be referring to one last trip with 13 specifically.
It's a bit like the scene in NoTD with 11 and River where they don't properly say goodbye, but also know they probably won't see each other again. And of course, we have no idea what future series will do, so it may be that RTD brings her back to meet 14/15.
tl;dr: I think Yaz leaving is more open-ended than people are taking it to be
Something I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone talking about is the whole 'regenerating into the master thing'? It really confused me because that's not what regeneration is??? If it had been some kind of body swap machine I'd have totally gone along with it, but regeneration is just getting a new body, so even if the doctor regenerated into a body that looked like the master's body, it would still be the doctor and the doctor's personality inside, right? So why did Rasputin master collapse, and how come the doctor now looking like the master suddenly had his personality too and the knowledge about what the next steps in his plan would be???? Anyway, all that said, this was a really fun episode if you don't think too much about the plot specifics
I had those very questions and confusion. Ended up turning my brain off and just trying to enjoy the end of the era. It works much better when you don't think too much lol.
I think that the forced regeneration system has two cabins because of this point, the first for the timelord who will be regenerated and the second probably to make sure that the next incarnation can be chosen by puting the spirit of another timelord inside the head of the first
This was probably a way to put control over dangerous timelord by sending them into the body of a dying one

And the whole "now i can destroy your legacy..."?? HOW? No one ever recognizes the new Doctor. Anyone who sees him will see... the Master... cosplaying as the Doctor.
If it's that simple, he could've just gone around claiming to be the Doctor and destroying civilizations then. Or just outright killed the Doctor (double tap while regenerating does the trick) and just taken her clothes!
What exactly did the whole "forced regeneration" accomplish that just KILLING HER wouldn't've?!?!?

It's been two weeks since this story broadcast and I still can't express enough gratitude for how much it comforted me through a rough week at the time.
It's not true that the Jo Martin doctor has a walk-on part with no purpose. It is because of her that the Cybermen are destroyed, allowing Yaz to get to the doctor. That would not have been possible for Yaz otherwise.
It's not her. It's a hologram. She's not there at all. The hologram could've probably picked any random person. Did the Cybermen even really care who they were shooting at right then?

I’m going to miss Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor. I’ve really enjoyed the style and “atmosphere” of this era, but the writing definitely wasn’t always the best.
But this is a great finale to an era and one of the best regeneration stories in New Who. I personally prefer Time Of The Doctor but that’s all down to Matt Smith’s incredible final scene mainly.
The Power of The Doctor was everything that The Day of The Doctor should have been, imo. It brought back the Classic Doctors for more significant roles, and celebrated what made Doctor Who great as a whole (unlike Day which only seemed to focus on elements from the post-2005 era onwards). However, on the more negative side, it didn't feel like an ending to an era. The episode was more like an anniversary celebration with a regeneration tacked on at the end of it. After all the previous New Who Doctors bringing about their deaths by making big sacrifices, it feels wrong that 13's death happens due to her getting hit by a laser beam she could have easily dodged. While I liked the final regeneration scene, I left The Power of The Doctor feeling somewhat unfulfilled. The Chibnall era ended on a somewhat anti-climactic note, and I do wish that we'd gotten at least 2 more seasons with 13 just to flesh out her character a bit more. Besides that, I did enjoy the episode in some places

Really wanted to see the Cybermen and Daleks start fighting in this story. Blows my mind we have only ever seen it once in who. Would also be funny as the Daleks said the Cybermen are better at dying where now they literally are cause they can endlessly die and come back. Would have been cool to potentially see the Cybermen massacre the Daleks alittle bit

Fun fact the guard on the train played by Joe Sims makes it around 30 actors that were in Broadchurch that have appeared in Dr Who/Torchwood
Vinder just happened to be there. Graham just happened to be there. The Rasputin master was just sleeping in the pod while doctor master was docing around. I think there was a checklist of things from previous successful episodes to tick off:
- master cloning himself, check
- daleks and cybermen on set together, check
- cybermen storming unit, check
- traitor dalek, check
- doc trapped by an unlikely alliance of enemies, check
- previous companions team up, fly the tardis and save the day, check
Stick it all in a blender and this is the result.

I wonder if this episode is crammed with original series 13 ideas that had to be abandoned because of covid. They don't all sit together particularly well, but could be great if given an episode to themselves.

I fail to understand why you think that Tegan has no right to have achieved all those things in her past 40 years, by saying it has no context. It shows us that she has achieved much, including a son, which may have been inspired by her travels with the Doctor. We know a little of Ace's life from her intro to one of the Season Collection box sets.
I don't think they meant she had no right to having done those things, just that they kind of come out of nowhere. I'm a NewWhoer and have negative context on the early companions, but i'm guessing if at least some of the things she'd mentioned also been references to things from her time on Who (e. g. if she had told her Doctor that she always wanted to travel, and now she's saying all the places she's travelled, a la old-Clara), then it would've felt more relevant to the viewer.
Why assume that RTD won't tidy up Chinball's "fugative" mess?
Jo Martin, will be back. John Simm and David Tennant, both came back for separate Moffat stories, even though they were RTD era characters

I think the reason why Yaz decided to leave is that she knew the doctor's was going to regerenate but she can't aceept it being the doctor, to her, 13 is the doctor and no one else in her eyes. 13 is her doctor and too see someone else saying "I'm the doctor" she doesn't know how to cope with that.
I'm glad someone else found the Dalek and Cybermen look of "Wtf?" as funny as I did. I've seen a lot of criticism that it's out of character or cringey, but honestly, OOC or not, it was hilarious.
What gave me s smile is the tune that the Master plays on the 2nd Doctor's recorder, as it is the same tune Patrick Troughton played in the Web of Fear.

The funny thing is that if Chibnall's time had been more like this special, fun and celebrating the show, then perhaps more people would appreciate Chibnall. But because he spent more time on lore and less on story and character, I can see people glossing over the run.
Now my head cannon is all the big finish companion chronicles are just these meetings and them talking to each other lol stupid I know but it's just for me lol
Friendly reminder that half of the universe is STILL destroyed after Flux and it's unlikely that's ever going to be picked up on again now.
Actually, the universe was fixed in the final episode of Flux series: Swarm and Azure planned to rewind time and destroy it again and again, but they didn't know about the Doctor duplicates. So, as time is rewound to before the Flux destruction, the Doctor duplicate removed the Flux (meaning none of the damage ever touched the universe - except for Earth, Sontarans, Daleks and Karvanista species, because they were in the epicenter of the final wave).
Now I'm gen curious on how you feel about Davis calling back to and cementing the destruction caused by the Flux in the recent specials!
To me this regeneration story is a good story, Just not quite as fantastic as The Parting of the Ways.

Great episode /special. I basically agree with nearly everything you said. My only real downside was yaz felt let down. It didn't feel like she was set up for what's coming next very well but it's a small gripe as I think yaz is great.
I have enjoyed chibs run overall and this was a lovely end piece . I'm dubious of tenant being back but I'm hopeful it will be good.

A few notes:
I've seen people mention Rusty in regards to the Dalek defecting and I've seen accusations that "Chibnall didn't watch the Capaldi era" have reered their ugly head again but I do think there is a difference, with Rusty there was intervention however with this Dalek there was none, it came to this realisation and defected on it's own which IS unprecedented!
And Yaz, I can definitely see why people think her exit is a bit forced considering how loyal she is but I think the episode does make this a point - Yaz could stay through regeneration but both her and the Doctor know that she wouldn't be able to handle it because she's been with this Doctor for so long. The Doctor will go on to regenerate and still be the Doctor and Yaz knows that but they wouldn't be HER Doctor and Yaz got a taste of this with the Master earlier on in the episode and she flat out told him "you're not MY Doctor" so to save both of them the pain the Doctor decided it would be best for them to part. Which is why they decided not to say goodbye. Because of this after a rewatch it does work for me and I won't lie, I did cry... Mandip's emotional performance when she is in tears and the Doctor going "It's alright, Yaz" broke me, incredible final performances from both Mandip and Jodie and I adore Yaz's final line on the show "Of course she's okay. She's the Doctor" that just sums it all up brilliantly, that's... the Power of the Doctor!
For me it was amazing finale. So good, giving Jodie's doctor great closure. I loved it!

I know it's almost certainly untrue of him, but I keep getting distracted by these little hints... as though Chibnall hasn't ever watched the Moffat era, or Capaldi's era in particular.

Fun fact, This is NOT Kates first time on-board the TARDIS, our first seeing her on board yes, but, hotels did the Doctor get her and Claire back home at the end of the Vanquishers... a Chis Chibnall story too
I think it was emphatized because it's the first time the doctor let her in by choice and not because she need to bring her back. The doctor choose to make her a teue companion at this point and not a passenger who needs help

I'm really looking forward to watching this review. Always loved them since I started watching about 10 years ago, think this episode was definitely one of the stronger ones this series
To be honest I really liked the CyberMasters and I hope they return again in the future for a 3rd time but sadly I doubt it. I also didn't even notice that the Power of the Doctor only had 2 CyberMasters with the Time Lord headdress (The Leader with the Gold and Subordinate with the Black and the others with normal side handles).
"fun and funny" to be honest I watched the power of the doctor and it was drivel. The worst part being how regeneration was treated so cheaply, as a consequence the entire story had no stakes for the doctor.

@@tTaseric That regeneration has no consequence and is an inconvenient plot device rather then how it was treated pre-chibnall. Time lords regenerate when they die but they still experience the pain of dying and the person they are does die.

With the actors having to regotiate new deals for the special since it was not in the original plans I am sure some actors were not in it as much as they could be. John Bishop was actually going on tour so it makes sense he had a limited part to play.
I'm so glad that Jodie got such a great episode to go out on. I've liked the era myself but I knew going in that this would have to be one of her best to solidify Thirteen's run. It's a bit like Androzani in a way where an imperfect era gets a REALLY strong end (not as good as Androzani, just a similar sensation). Easily the best regeneration episode since Parting of the Ways.
I feel like this episode should be titled "legacy of the doctor"

Great Review! I actually love this story and I think this is a great sendoff to Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor and Now with David Tennant back I want to see where they are going with this.
Two problems with the Master's "Plan": Is this actually the Doctor's mind "regenerated" into his, complete with memories? Or did he just transfer his mind into her body? If he can foresee everything withthe Cyberium, why does Yaz consistently surprise him? Also: This is a LOT of effort into doing something that he could simply do by capturing the Doctor, dressing up in his Doc Cosplay and doing evil in his own TARDIS (which we see here can be made to look like a police box)...*what's the real difference?* Hell, he doesn't even NEED to put the Doctor out of action, the universe of time and space is so big, he could do evil in her name for centuries before she realized what was going on!
He did say this is the day you die to the doctor and that he wanted to wipe her from existence.

Also yaz being shown there’s life after the doctor from a support group about the doctor where people talk about the doctor isn’t the best look. Maybe if it was less like a support group, or they talked about other things. But it looks like there’s very little life after the doctor
I think it's more about the adventures they still go on, just without the doctor. Their lives were still changed by the doctor and that will always be a part of their lives, but they didn't stop doing anything jsut because they left, they still try to make a difference in the world

To me, there are no negatives about this special. It was perfect and very emotional. When #13 regen'd, I couldn't believe she was gone. I'll miss her for sure, but I'm glad to see David's #10 back with the prospect of Ncuti taking over in 2024

wounderful review mate think about it this way now all 3 of the new doctor who showrunners will have had the opportunity to write/pen specials that celabrate the shows history and the message weather its the frinds we make becuse of the show or that we learn never to be cruel or cowardly becuse of the doctor or what ever RTD wants to do in the 60th anniversary i just think its fair they all got to show love to a show that means a lot to all of them weather you like them or not

It's a good regeneration story. Really good. I could follow it fairly well. Great visuals. Love all the messages from the companions. A very under rated period of doctor who. A great send off for jodie.
Rewatching this episode it feels like it was written by AI or something. The way characters and plot threads come and go away with no permanence and it follows kind of a strange fever dream logic.

I think the returns of Tennant will emphatize the idea of moving on
Right after the regeneration he seems to knows it's not normal for him to be here and, in my opinion, the 60th anniversary will just explain why and let this doctor, who was not ready to regenerate at his end, accept it and move on, probably with a callback to 10th ending line like "Now I'm ready to go"
