I was one of the first passengers on this back in 81. Took it from 32nd st Naval Station to downtown area all the time. Enjoyed every trip. Brings back memories from my Navy years.
This is great to see. I started as a student and a worker at UCSD in 1985 and I just retired from staff in 2020, so I've seen a bit of the history and geography of this line. The university wanted nothing to do with this line in the 80s and 90s, but administrations come and go and the current one has made the extension a vital part of their planning. I saw most of the construction near UCSD, and it was quite an enterprise, but this is just part of a larger project. Two automobile bridges over I-5 were also constructed, along with a bike/pedestrian path directly from campus to the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station. I enjoyed strolling that path on the way to the Coaster after work -- all downhill! I think another quality feature of this line can be seen in your presentation. That is, from Old Town north, the line is fully grade separated! Thank you for sharing this, Mike!
Awesome! Thanks for this tour. I lived in San Diego County years ago when this line was still in the planning stages. I look forward to visiting again sometime and riding this expanded route.
Amazing video Mike! I truly love this USCD extension line. I’ve visited this USCD line in person at the USCD college campus and it is amazing. Thanks for making this video possible!
The Trolley has incredible potential. It rivaled the Portland MAX in 2019 total and per mile ridership. It recovered faster than any other US/Canadian LRT, even before the youth pass, even before the Mid Coast opening. The Trolley also has two $4B under construction TODs (Riverwalk and SDSU Mission Valley) on the Green Line alone, and that's before counting anything in Downtown. What the Trolley needs most is double if not triple existing frequencies.
They are officially trying to run 7.5 min frequencies on this exact line (like the border section) during rush hour in 2025, so progress is happening....slowly
Yes the video that I wanted the most Something interesting about it at the final stop at UTC they have a little more track to maybe store two sets speaking of it do you have videos of the order 2000 because since they were getting retired and doing similar to the U2 video.
They’re just calling the routes in colours not the trains with it. Like Green Line and Orange Line are in red too or in advertisement wraps, there’s no red line. There’s the silver line but those are a bunch of different historical streetcar trains and the proposed Purple line is probably a subway, still no red
Bummed to find this line still doesn't get 'close' to the beach... It looks like it's a 1.5 mile walk though to Black's Beach... Who do we got to petition for a Mission Beach Line?
They've floated the idea of a line to Mission Beach for years, but nothing has ever come of it. Same with the airport. Sounds like the next project might be a secondary line from Mission Valley to the border along the I-805 corridor.
The problem with the Trolley is that it really only works for students, tourists and those who live/work downtown. I live less than a mile from a station in east county. It is a 20-30 minute drive to get to Kearny Mesa during rush hour, or it is 90 minutes by trolley and busses. I'm just not going to spend three hours a day commuting.
2019 total and per mile Trolley ridership rivaled that of the Portland MAX, and it's recovered from COVID stronger than any other US/Canadian LRT system except for maybe Seattle. The Trolley does need far better frequencies, and a Purple Line to Kearny Mesa could be a great project. But even before the Mid Coast, it was rivaling the Portland MAX, which is surprising.
@@alexhaowenwong6122 There was a 39.7 million trips on the Trolley in Fiscal Year 2014. Despite considerable expansion, ridership was down to 29.7 million in 2022.
Interurban lines were being abandoned in the 1950s and 1960s. Now history is repeating itself by bringing back electric rail transportation. The freeways out in California have run out of capacity and can't handle much more motor vehicle traffic.
Any links from credible sources to back your claims?? And last time I criminals drive too, in fact I'm sure there are more crimes committed by criminals who drive than a criminal who rides the trolley.
@@Bellman84 can you post the link?? And aside from your regular homeless people that you'd see regardless of the trolley extension, what other "crime" has came or increased in the USD area??

Thanks, Scott. Hard to believe that the trolley system has been running in San Diego for so long now.

An interesting light rail system, similar to our trams. An excellent video. Thank you for showing me. I wish you a nice weekend.
Quite a fitting time to upload this as this month marks 1st anniversary of this extention opened. Great Video! 👍
Indeed! Thanks for watching!
Another great video. Thanks for sharing.
Very interresting Mike, i like to see and to learn about all transportation systems in US towns. Thanks.
Cool video with San Diego Trolley Blue Line. 🙂👍🏻❤️💖
Thank you!
Nice video of the trolley system in that part of the country. Enjoyed watching and have a nice rest of your Friday.(Steve)

Wow, I didn’t know they are actually doing an extension!
Yup! It's all up and running now!

This is great to see it, ℹ sometimes pass it when I see my grandmother Marie in El Cajon.

Nice video, Mike. Light rail doesn't get enough attention on youtube.

cool one Mike. have you ever considered buying a drone with a camera for your videos? I think it would be cool
I just love how the elevated structures fit so well in their area. Let the NIMBYs tell it, and it destroys the view 😑.
Thanks for watching

Thanks, Rhett! :)
The coaster needs to extend its line all the way to the Mission San Juan Capistrano Station.
Why
@@Amtrakfan90278 Because there's more beyond Oceanside.
The Surfliner already exists.

What is to come of the old siding and spur where the ck holiday car was held?
When are you going to do a video on EX Amtrak F40PHR unit 231????
I don't have any firm plans to do a video specifically about 231 but that could always change.

The question is how frequently do the trolleys run?
~15 minutes in each direction
@@surfliner456 not really that good but also not terrible
Do you think the blue line will be extended more north or east? And do you think the new copper line will be extended further to santee and that area?
