The R Line south of 59th Street was built with a 4-track expansion provision. Notice how the northbound side of the Bay Ridge, 77th, & 86th stations were built different from the southbound sides (notably without columns). This was done so the added tracks could be added on the northbound side and the platforms there could be torn down and new ones would be built. The northbound track south of 59th is essentially the southbound express track.
