nice video. thank u. one doubt: whats the difference between reference passive speakers (R 51) and Powered speakers (RP 51)? apart from built in amp, how its beneficial? also please explain sound distribution for both speaker models by an AV Receiver (i am using Denon X 2400 receiver). thanks in advance
The passive speakers are designed to work with A/V receivers for all the benefits that can give which includes surround sound. The powered version of these speakers do not work with A/V receivers to be combined into a theater system. They are great where there isn't much space or stereo audio is all that is needed.
Crutchfield thank u 😊 one more: If I use Powered Speakers as front left n right, do they save the load shared by receiver? I meant receiver will distribute its wattage to other surround speakers?
PA gear like the Bose S1 Pro is focused on loud volumes to fill venues. The Klipsch is designed for personal spaces like in a home, office, etc... so it won't play nearly as loud as the Bose, but since the home is a quieter environment, its focus is more on clarity/accuracy of the sound instead of super loud volume levels to fill larger areas.
Neither the Klipsch R-51PM, or the R-41PM are expandable. However, Klipsch does offer a wireless surround sound solution. The Klipsch RW speakers and subs can be used in a 5.1 configuration. i wish there was a seperate optional wired volume knob. I would love to use these as computer speakers but don't want to have to depend on the remote to adjust the volume.
thats exactly what I use them for and its honestly not as big a deal as you would think. Normally ill set a threshold of the max volume id need while sitting at my computer, and anything else just adjust on the computer end. The remote is great with a line volume adjust, so just set the sub to the highest LPF and turn its gain/volume all the way up and let them do the rest. Honestly a great option for an office/bedroom.

It would depend on the soundbar but personally, yes, I think that would be a great idea. You could make the argument that a soundbar may provide better dialogue for TV and movies but those Klipsch speakers are more dynamic than most sound bars and would definitely perform better for 2-channel stereo music. Go for the Klipsch RP-160M if you have space, seriously! I have both the R-41M and the RP-160M. I know there's a big difference in size between these two, but you can get lots of discounts on RP-160M's these days. You can also go for the RP-150M if you want the same size as R-51M. Here's the thing: the reference premiere series is like another brand compared to the reference series. You may read lots of critics about Klipsch speakers lacking depth, this pretty much doesn't apply to the RP series. Much more depth, A LOT better mids and lows. If you go for the RP-160M, you don't really need a sub unless you want really high bass.
You could use a splitter to send the signal to two separate subwoofers if you wanted. The rear USB-B is for connecting a computer for audio streaming. The mini-USB is for service updates only. They do not have a a charging port on them
If I wanted to connect these to an echo dot, will they stay on all the time, or do they turn off automatically after a while? If they do turn off automatically, is there a way to defeat that?

hey crutch, currently i have an all wired setup. klipsch sub, receiver, and center channel acting as a soundbar. i would like to delete as many wires as possible, so im wondering if i can delete the receiver, plug these bookshelfs into my tv, and plug my sub into the bookshelf to power it. is that something that these can do?
It's a good idea but probably won't work. The receiver is what is sending the discrete left, right and center signals out. If you eliminate that the sound bar and L/R speakers would essentially be playing the same thing.
These Klipsch powered speakers are not built to be connected to a receiver. You will want passive Klipsch speakers to use with your receiver. Here are the Klispch bookshelf speakers we offer that will work: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc227/g_37900/Bookshelf-Speakers.html?fa=1#&nvpair=FFBrand|Klipsch
That greatly depends on your goals for the audio because both can work in a room with those dimensions. The R-51PM model offers a bigger woofer (4" in the other model and a 5.25" in this one) to give a more lively and full sound than the other model.
Hi Ricky! This is really one of those user based answers. Since both the LP120X and the R-51PM's preamps are switchable, I would recommend trying the connection with the LP120X using it's preamp to the R-51PM, and vice versa. Unfortunately, they can't decode Dolby Digital signals. Their optical digital audio inputs will accept two-channel stereo PCM signals only (up to 24-bit/96kHz).
We don't have firsthand experience with Dali speakers so it's tough to say Mack. The Klipsch speakers certainly sound great and get good feedback from our customers.
Its a little thing, just a peeve of mine...these are NOT monitors. Monitors are self powered, individual speakers meant for reference use. A monitor can be used as a single speaker, taking in its own source. Each monitor is its own complete set. these are powered speakers...difference being there is one main speaker with all the inputs, brains and amp, and the other is a passive speaker. Also, monitors are unique due to the fact that they have to meet specific requirements to be "reference grade" in their frequency response....these Klipschs are not that!
That's a good question because both are used there for various sound and connectivity goals. I recommend contacting an advisor to discuss your goals and preferences to get a personal recommendation between them. Here's how to reach us for this help: www.crutchfield.com/I-rFBKc227/ContactUs.aspx
I'd think a pair of the KRK speakers should play louder than these can. They are PA speakers and meant to push the sound out as well as they have more power than these Klipsch speakers.
The Klipsch R-51M, are passive speakers and will need to be connected to an amplifier or receiver, for power. The Klipsch R-51PM, have their own built in amplifier, and will not need an external amp or receiver for use.
I don't recommend mixing speaker brands in home theater systems. It's ok to have a different brand subwoofer from the speakers but mixing different brand speakers in a home theater system creates potential voice matching issues.

They should be set to "Line". The Phono setting would be if you were connecting a turntable.
Crutchfield Awesome! Thanks a lot for your help.
Hi, ¿What do you think about combine this speakers with a Klipsch Subwoofer R10SW?
That sounds like an outstanding combo to us 👍
If I have a record player that has a preamp pre built would I need to put the switch onto line or phono?
If the turntable has a phono preamp built in and it is turned on, then the input on these speakers should be set to line
Would these be good for my tv in a small room or should i get tower speakers
Both have advantages and more often than not, sizing wins as space is at a premium in small rooms. However, when that is not a concern, it is possible to get floor standing speakers that improve the sound without becoming too overbearing in the room. nice video. thank u.
one doubt: whats the difference between reference passive speakers (R 51) and Powered speakers (RP 51)? apart from built in amp, how its beneficial?
also please explain sound distribution for both speaker models by an AV Receiver (i am using Denon X 2400 receiver).
thanks in advance
The passive speakers are designed to work with A/V receivers for all the benefits that can give which includes surround sound. The powered version of these speakers do not work with A/V receivers to be combined into a theater system. They are great where there isn't much space or stereo audio is all that is needed.
Crutchfield thank u 😊
one more: If I use Powered Speakers as front left n right, do they save the load shared by receiver? I meant receiver will distribute its wattage to other surround speakers?
How would you compare the sound quality of the R51 PM with the Bose S1 Pro.
Would really appreciate your opinion.
Many thanks... really appreciate the quick response.
Glad we could help!
What would you connect to a turntable, a R-41PM or a Heritage The Three? Thanks
The RP-41M will give you a truer stereo sound due to have a left and right speaker.
I want something that can be expanded to multi channel or 5.1, could I do that with these?
Neither the Klipsch R-51PM, or the R-41PM are expandable.
However, Klipsch does offer a wireless surround sound solution. The Klipsch RW speakers and subs can be used in a 5.1 configuration. You can start with a 2 channel setup, and expand as needed.

@@crutchfield my issue is my monitor is 144hz at 1440p through display port, but I also want 5.1 for my pc. Usually, you'd use hdmi for bitstream to an avr but it would act as a second monitor. This then effects the refresh rates on monitor etc. I want to be able to have both... Would you guys be able to test various methods and find the best compromise? The whole pc/audiophile community could use a solution!
Things you can try:
- one gpu via display port as above, second gpu for hdmi pass-through to avr.
- One gpu for dp to monitor and hdmi pass-through to avr.

I'm interested in these but i'm wondering if i can turn off the bluetooth function when using an analog connection. I just bought a pair of Kanto YU6 and when the speaker is on, the bluetooth is on as well, no way to turn it off. Is istpossible with these?
I have these speakers and all you have to do is just change the input and the Bluetooth will not connect to it.
Heyy, can i place my right speaker on the left side n left speaker on the right side?
Since the signal's being sent to each speaker is directional, swapping the left and right speaker would not be recommended.
i wish there was a seperate optional wired volume knob.
The fives the sixes or r51s for a smaller living room what would you suggest?
Will they be used just for music? What types of music do you enjoy?
@@crutchfield rock jazz instrumentals classical yes just music
Based on the room you described and your listening preferences, we recommend The Fives. They are very accurate and detailed, and won't overpower the room. You can find them here:

Would the wireless Klipsch R-10SWI sub work with these?
Yes indeed!
Do you think it is a good idea to hook up these with a tv instead of going with soundbar? Hooking up with a powered subwoofer of course
It would depend on the soundbar but personally, yes, I think that would be a great idea. You could make the argument that a soundbar may provide better dialogue for TV and movies but those Klipsch speakers are more dynamic than most sound bars and would definitely perform better for 2-channel stereo music. I say go for it!

Which model do you recommend for a 13x25 foot room with low ceilings? I will also be most likely purchasing the 10 or 12 inch klipsch sub as well
For that room I'd recommend the R-51PM to give you a fuller sound and more power. The R-51PM's will keep up better with a larger sub too.
Also, skip the klipsch sub. Get SVS or something.
Nice work! Can they be paired with 2 subs? and does the usb output charge as well?
You could use a splitter to send the signal to two separate subwoofers if you wanted. The rear USB-B is for connecting a computer for audio streaming. The mini-USB is for service updates only. They do not have a a charging port on them
If I wanted to connect these to an echo dot, will they stay on all the time, or do they turn off automatically after a while? If they do turn off automatically, is there a way to defeat that?
The auto-standby mode can be bypassed, the instructions on how to do are in the manual!
Hey, great review, quick question... what Klipsch subwoofer do you recommend and is compatible for R51-PM model?
Hi Nicholas!
Check out the Klipsch Reference R-8SW!

This will give you plenty of low-end, without taking away from the great detail from your R51-PM's!

can i use those as surround sound rear speakers
Can I use these speakers as my rear speakers in home theater?
Yes you can absolutely use those as rear surrounds.
are these good to add to my cinema 600 soundbar?
These are great speakers but unfortunately the Klipsch R-51PM and R-41PM will not pair with the Klipsch Cinema 600. The R-51PM and R-41PM are meant to be used as a 2 or 2.1 stereo set up. However, we do carry the wireless surrounds that go with the Cinema 600. They're currently out of stock but we do have them on back order. No receiver or Amp needed,so I can easily plug this to my Tv?
No receiver, these have a built in pre amp and are self powered.
Andy nailed it! These can be plugged into a TV's audio output without needing a receiver or an amp. These are already powered by a built-in amp
@@crutchfield bought these from you. Can I connect them to a receiver in the future?
Does anyone know if I can connect my technics SL-B202 directly too these speakers?
Yes, absolutely! There's an RCA phono input right on the back of the main speaker. 👍
hey crutch, currently i have an all wired setup. klipsch sub, receiver, and center channel acting as a soundbar. i would like to delete as many wires as possible, so im wondering if i can delete the receiver, plug these bookshelfs into my tv, and plug my sub into the bookshelf to power it. is that something that these can do?
sub is an older model, ksw-12
It's a good idea but probably won't work. The receiver is what is sending the discrete left, right and center signals out. If you eliminate that the sound bar and L/R speakers would essentially be playing the same thing.

How do I set these speaks up to a maranta 1200 reciever?
These Klipsch powered speakers are not built to be connected to a receiver. You will want passive Klipsch speakers to use with your receiver. Here are the Klispch bookshelf speakers we offer that will work:

Which model do you recommend for a 13x13 foot room?
That greatly depends on your goals for the audio because both can work in a room with those dimensions. The R-51PM model offers a bigger woofer (4" in the other model and a 5.25" in this one) to give a more lively and full sound than the other model.
Could u attach an Aufioengine B-fi to these?
Yes, you can connect using the optical digital audio input
or RCA stereo analog audio input.
My Audio Technica LP120X USB has a preamp, is the preamp in the R-51PM better? Thanks
Hi Ricky!
This is really one of those user based answers. Since both the LP120X and the R-51PM's preamps are switchable, I would recommend trying the connection with the LP120X using it's preamp to the R-51PM, and vice versa.
This is one of those scenarios that you can't put a check beside one, and say this one will perform best, unfortunately.

Can you hook those speakers to the PC using only bluetooth?
Some computers have Bluetooth built in that can send audio to speakers like these. I recommend checking your computer specs to see if it has Bluetooth
Is the audio quality same as the non powered one?
Absolutely! You're getting a perfectly powered set of speakers, which definitely optimizes your sound quality.
can Bluetooth connection create stereo sound or just two speakers with mono sound?
Yep! These speakers sure can take in stereo audio from Bluetooth and produce stereo sound from it!
hi, would this help these speakers at all MX3 DAC Power Amplifier?
If you are referring to the Topping MX3 unit, then I don't think it will help the sound because everything I read about its abilities indicated it's meant for passive speakers (ones without a built-in amp) like these: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/p_714R51M/item.html
Can i install with receiver in mine 5.1.2? i need replace my surround speakers
If your receiver has surround preamp outputs you could use these in that system.
@@crutchfield mine receiver is yamaha rx585, will work it?
No that Yamaha does not have preamp outputs for adding powered front or surround speakers.
How do you think k they would be paired with dual pb1000s
I think that would be a great setup - the SVS subs should provide ample bass and the Klipsch horn tweeters provide a big, wide sound stage.

Hi Michael, we do have top models in both brands. Did you want to stick with a powered option? Are there any specific features or inputs you need?
Can these decode Netflix Dolby through the optical
Unfortunately, they can't decode Dolby Digital signals. Their optical digital audio inputs will accept two-channel stereo PCM signals only (up to 24-bit/96kHz).
Would either of these be a substantial upgrade from the Dali Zensor 1 AX, being driven by a PC through an external DAC?
We don't have firsthand experience with Dali speakers so it's tough to say Mack. The Klipsch speakers certainly sound great and get good feedback from our customers.
@@crutchfield Thanks for the reply! I will try to audition some Klipsch as soon as the quarantine is over, stay safe and thanks again.
If these speakers could connect direct to WiFi and had Google assistant then I would buy.

This or krk gen4 8’s just need something stoopid loud for when I’m working out
I'd think a pair of the KRK speakers should play louder than these can. They are PA speakers and meant to push the sound out as well as they have more power than these Klipsch speakers.
Witch is better klipsch sixes or this model?
The Sixes are part of Klipsch Heritage line which is typically their best quality. We no longer carry the Sixes however.
@@crutchfield i see.. because i have one then this new r51pm is released with less money ahahah
what the difference between r-51m & r-51pm?
The Klipsch R-51M, are passive speakers and will need to be connected to an amplifier or receiver, for power.
The Klipsch R-51PM, have their own built in amplifier, and will not need an external amp or receiver for use.
Are these speakers active?
Yes, power is built in.
Thanks!

This device may be combined with the Bose Theater and become one voice
I don't recommend mixing speaker brands in home theater systems. It's ok to have a different brand subwoofer from the speakers but mixing different brand speakers in a home theater system creates potential voice matching issues.
How does it compare to The Sixes?
They are similar in size and output. It would depend largely on what amp you paired them with since the Sixes are powered.
Is these Bluetooth speaker?
Yes they do have built-in Bluetooth.
