+Jonathan Stwarka I saw an interview where taylor said he had the idea for the Chorus for a while, always coming back to the title line. Jonny is listed as a co-writer though on the track.
Few songs have touched me like this song does. Friends absent, friends lost...and friends right here, right now. Forty years drops away like nothing, and I am back with the people I worked with at my first job at Kings Island. Thanks, Dawes.
I had a 71 elcamino in high school,I passed it down to my brother where he could finish school & be cool..I love that line about elcamino run forever....it brings tears to my eyes..genious song!!!!
I can't put into words how this song makes me feel, or what it means to me, but I thank the members of Dawes from the bottom of my heart for it. Their music is truly transcendental to me.
Another song for Dawes-I never get tired of. I saw this band at Summer Stage in Central Park last summer. Ended up going by myself at the very last minute -It was the best time I've had in years and years at any concert. Right in front of the stage-The whole crowd -we were singing out at the top of our lungs. So fun ....these musicians are really talented -A great memory-THANK YOU.
I heard the Dawes sing this live at a concert with my dad six years ago. As soon as the opening lines were sung, my dad looks at me, smiles, and goes “this, is going to be a great song”. And he was right.
EXCELLENT! I am a newcomer to this band, but - bad pun coming up! - a serendipitous find on TH-cam opened up new DAWES!! As I posted on the FB page - I'm a fan! I live in Durban, on the east coast of South Africa. I'm pretty sure that there not many people, if any, that know of DAWES. I shall try to change that in my circle.
Brilliant band. Thanks Dawes for this great music. Classic melodies of these present days. "Late night drives and hot french fries and friends around the country From Charlottesville to good old Santa Fe When I think of you, you still got on that hat that says let’s party I hope that thing is never thrown away I hope that life without a chaperone is what you thought it’d be I hope your brother’s El Camino runs forever I hope the world sees the same person that you’ve always been to me And may all your favorite bands stay together Now I’m just waking up and I’m not thinking clearly so don’t quote me Of what I hope when I’m writing you this song Ain’t it funny how some people pop into your head so easily I haven’t seen you in there for so long I hope that life without a chaperone is what you thought it’d be I hope your brother’s El Camino runs forever I hope the world sees the same person that you always were to me And may all your favorite bands stay together"

I think that "May all your favorite bands stay together" is one of the sweetest sentiments I've ever heard.
+futoma21 I couldn't agree more. Its what first grabbed me and hooked me in.
I concur, but would also submit this by Glen Hansard as one also :th-cam.com/video/iu0s3qwFPc0/w-d-xo.html
Sang this to my sweet Pop as he was taking his last breaths. I sure hope he liked it. 😔
My favorite songwriter. Maybe the best songwriter of my generation... Taylor Goldsmith.
damn right. i'm seeing these guys for the second time this month & i'm so excited it's retarded.
g hoops i think johnny "corndog" fritz actually wrote this song if i'm not mistaken.

+g hoops Most underrated band ever!

Taylor is the best around, a literate genius of idea, thought, expression and melody
Beautiful song that brings back so many memories for this 60 year old. Saw them open for ELO. Great band
One of the great, criminally under-rated bands of our generation.
Great stuff makes you think of your teenage years ❤
these guys have no idea how great they are...so, so good...
Brand new Dawes fan here just finally discovered these guys and I absolutely love them!
Just discovered these guys at the gentleman of the road tour.. Amazing
Dawes is just plain awesome, glad to see they don't change to be more radio friendly, this is MUSIC.
An incredibly beautiful song. The lyrics get me every time. Bravo.
Yep I’m a fan now !!!
Got the new album on order
Cool song; lament and very nicely done

Sooooo good. ❤
Adore this song.
I bought the album within a day of hearing this song on NPR. I like them all, but this is the best song on there.

Gabriel Pinto Moya It's actually "with one eye open, I'm writing you this song" at the beginning of the second verse.
Thanks Christopher McKee for the correction. I appreciate it a lot. And much more beautiful the song that way.
Fabulous Band.

Thank you for putting the words down here. I'm hard of hearing and have always wondered what some of the words were.
Those are some tasty bends on that LP.
that's a fucking excellent tune
Just great.
Killer guitar solo
I would add "may your 2 liter Pepsi never loose its fizz".
Aw nah man ; you gonna start a pop/soda/Coke/cola war over That ^^
LoL

May your favorite bar not close down
Is that drummer "Shades of Levon Helm"?
That's Duane Betts, Dickey's son, on the gold top
This reminds me of a bob segar song
"Hot french fries"
I’ve been upset with this song for the last year 😢
He needs to wash off that DNA on the frets. Sick.
