    Young people don't realize how amazing this show was/is. Talk shows were everything back then. This was ground-breaking. Sally Jesse took a journalistic standpoint. She didn't know what to say because this was a completely new concept to her, and to most people back then. The issues and questions that people spoke about on these shows just wouldn't happen today. I think the downfall came after the Jenny Jones thing. I would love to know what became of Toby!

    I don't think Sally is being rude. It's a talk show. She's asking questions that a lot of people are thinking. (And, from what I remember, she was abrasive in general.)
    But... I'm a Christian. Toby has never hurt me. No gay person has ever hurt me. We don't have to agree 100% with anyone's lifestyle to accept them, do we? Why must we be so hostile to LGBT people?

      @GayDracula_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@bowtoyoursensei554 Toby seems to identify as nonbinary. They say they feel neither male nor female, and they live as how they see their identity. Which is different from being born without specific assigned sex. People born without a specific assigned sex are usually considered intersex, and there are still different variations of intersex people, including those with visible genitalia. Considering the time this show came out, the term nonbinary was not used by many, however nonbinary identities did exist. It was a struggle the farther we go back, especially when they lacked the words to understand.

    • @xTribalGirlx
      @xTribalGirlx 9 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      sinekonata don't use "it" for a non-binary person unless they specifically tell you to. it's dehumanizing and makes it sound as if you're referring to them in terms of an animal or object, not a person.
      i'd be fine with hanging out with them even if they believe in god, because unlike some people I am not one of those atheists that loves to insult everyone who finds comfort in religion. also don't judge them for loving their dog more than people. being trans means you get a lot of shit from everyone, back then it must have been even worse, I don't blame them if they'd rather stay in the company of their dog. At least their dog is never going to call them an "it" or make invasive comments about their genitals.

    • @UNOwen1
      @UNOwen1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +sinekonata Toby finds in dogs - and another species - they doesn't have the same preconceptions as humans.
      A dog (or ANY OTHER animal) doesn't count your bank account, doesn't care if you're black, white, rich, poor, young, old. It's much simpler, much more basic, universal; it's what inside of YOU, it's looking at.
      I'm not some hippy-dippy person, but, it's really hard to explain that all intelligent life has 'basics' in common.
      We all came from this amazing thing thing known as 'life,' and more-than-likely, 'life' here, began out 'there (I don't just mean that we are made of stuff first created in the hearts of ancient stars), and, in essence we all come from the 'one' (I'm not speaking 'religiously,' but, rather.. more basic, is the only way I can say.
      I'll use a dog as an example; a dog - other than being another mammal, doesn't have a lot in common with humans.
      On the surface.
      But, when one tries, one CAN communicate with a dog, or, with any animal, because for some reason one I don't understand - there ARE universal truths.
      On a simplistic level, if a dog makes certain sounds, you know it's sad, or it's hurt, happy, etc.
      The same goes for the dog understanding YOU.
      It's not verbal, it's audible, it's more tonality.
      My dog knows - w/out me doing anything, or showing any 'emotion - that I'm sad, and will try to comfort me.
      I'll shut up, here, but,

    I love this show and saw it years ago when it was first aired. I'm so glad to have found it on TH-cam because Toby is the most fascinating human being I've ever seen. Toby has one huge thing in common with God. Toby is neither man nor woman, but both, or neither depending on how you look at it. I never understood why we had to call God "he" although I've heard the reasons/arguments to support it. The main reason being it's just "easier" to give God a pronoun. It's actually quite easy to simply repeat the the word "God" because after all it's only a 3 letter word! Give me a break. Thank you Toby for showing us who you are; the most balanced person on the planet and a true gift from God, The Universe, Existence!!!

    Toby, I saw this when it first aired. This was before the internet, and I know that you just wanted to be able to reach out, and not just have people understand, but, you wished to meet someone who was 'just like you.'
    I admired you then, I NEVER stopped thinking about you (I recorded this, on my creaky VCR, back then, and made many watch.II always felt you were so well-adjusted, but, in a way, so isolated (NOT by your choice - I admired your openness).
    The things you said then, have stuck with me (I first saw the Donahue interview).
    I, too am a dog-lover, and, I prefer them to people. I appreciate how they don't judge you if you're young, old, rich, poor, male, female, they just want to be with you, be you friend. They DO love you - for YOU.
    This isn't another gender It's another species, and it's so pure, so beautiful, if more people could only understand - it's NOT just dogs, but, we're all on this planet, together, and even though we may not speak the same languages, there ARE universals.
    I always felt if we're ever thinking of communicating with extraterrestrials, we'd better first start here, with those around us.
    I loved how eloquently you spoke, here, even when Sally was really tying to get an 'answer' from you.
    I always wanted to just say 'hello,' and I KNOW you know there are many people who care about you, and who would love to be your friend.

We constructed this strict model male and female world, it reflects in religion, even in god. They literally created us like so, then anything that's not is abnormal. A mistake. I remember seeing clips from this on Talk Soup roundabout 199x. I always remember that the first time I mentioned to my mother that I did not want to have a gender she derisively responded "do you want to be like TOBY?" I did not want to be like Toby! Not presentation-wise, anyway, but Toby and I otherwise had some perspectives in common.

    I find it strange that this person Toby is so outspoken on this show and then is never heard from again. No trace of this person online. Nobody seems to know who this is who are very close to this subject. That makes me think either he was putting on an act or the Sally Show was.

      vcrcooking I read online that Toby has done works of art for the Transgender Community but, I can't find Toby at all let alone a last name. I need to find out more about this person

    • @littlecasino60
      @littlecasino60 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      vcrcooking ~ That's possible because I once knew this man that appeared on Geraldo back in the '90s and nearly everything that came out of his mouth on that show was a lie. He was on with an older, non-passable transsexual that they were claiming were old Army buddies, or some such nonsense. However, he actually told me he always had a fascination with transsexuals and had even married one. He would hang out at drag shows in Dallas always lurking at them. On Geraldo, however, he acted like this was all a surprise to him and he'd never known a trans before his old buddy called up and said, "I have something I need to tell you. Surprise! I had a sex-change and now I'm a woman." I knew the whole thing was B.S. and I bet they only met a few weeks before the show, because this guy told me all the transgenders he knew were young and passable, none were middle-aged dads in drag like this person was.

      It’s not. Toby would be, at least, 60 years old now. They were on an obscure talk show that most likely flew under the radar long before the internet came about.
      So really, few people knew about their existence, so the advent of the internet never really cataloged their actions afterwards. In a roundabout way, Toby is much like Henry Darger. Few people know of them, and even fewer know their personal lives.
      I have heard of a Facebook account for Toby though, so they might’ve created an account a while ago. No idea where it is though.

      Their real name is Jim Sinclair, and they basically founded the autism rights movement

  • @raikitty5608

    This individual is remarkably wise, especially since "they" seem young in this video. I figured out why. They have Autism. I think it's a superpower. My boys and husband have it and are alot smarter than me.I believe it's an evolved type of human being. People think of Autism as a disorder, but it probably isn't.

      Because singular They has been in use for centuries, and was even commonly used in Shakespeare’s writings. Not to mention how “E” can be easily confused with he/she, while “it” is dehumanizing to most non-binary people.
