    I'm in the process of converting my 125g from a planted South American Cichlid tank to a non-planted African Cichlid tank, and I tore down my 2217 and Pro 3 filters to clean them out. I made the rookie mistake of not keeping the parts separate, so when I went to put them back together, I found myself lost. This video was a lifesaver! Thanks for making it; you did an awesome job!

    As a professional Aquarist of 10 years setting up her first Eheim at home (what...we use sumps, overflows, or sand filters at work almost exclusively...) I very much want to be your friend. 😁 Entertaining, to the point, and informative. Thanks!

    I bought one of these from you guys on Ebay this week. Bought it on Wednesday. It's now Friday and it's already at my local UPS store for me to pick up after work. That's Buffalo to Syracuse. And that was in a week with a huge winter storm. Great service.

    I have the same filter. Love it.
    The way I prime mine is to close both valves on the outlet side of the filter on the top of the filter body and separate the quick coupling between the two valves. I open the filter side valve and give the line a quick suck just enough to get the water flowing up over the goose neck of the pick up line in a siphoning action
    . When I see the water falling I put the quick connect back together and open both valves. It's not really necessary to close these valves, but I got in the habit since it's nice to use them when you're taking the unit apart after having it in service. The water fills the canister and runs up the outlet side to close to the water level in the tank by itself. From that point on I maintain the prime by closing the valves when working on the system. Reopening the valves on the suction side after putting the filter back in should fill the canister and you're good to go again. Gentle rocking of the filter will get any trapped air around the top of the canister to go out the pump.

    Thank you for this extremely helpful video. I had no idea how to set up the hose and connectors for my Eheim 2213, but your demonstration made it fairly clear. Your priming technique worked like a charm, too! I would suggest including a still shot of the filter canister once the hoses are connected, as the video did not show the final result.

    No sucking! To start the syphon, just fill the output hose with water (its super easy to dunk it in the tank when its disconnected), close the connector at the end, plug it in to the filter side ( wich of course if below the tank) open it up and gravity does the rest. Pretty sure thats why it has double tap connectors. They make it insanely easy to clean the filter.

    Hey ADAM C -- you will need to replace the white floss pads most often since rinsing them causes them to stretch; you will also want to replace the carbon pads if you choose to use them since carbon exhausts fairly quickly. The other media can be thoroughly rinsed in aquarium water for up to 1 year before you need to replace any of it!

    Thanks for the vid. MUCH better than the manufacturer's instructions. It's been a few years since I've installed one of these. Although it seems most reef enthusiasts prefer sumps, I use this filter in addition to my sump for extra filtration. For saltwater use, especially with live coral, you should rinse out the canister and all media with either clean saltwater or RO fresh water before hooking it up to your system.

    having that fine pad above the media will cause the media to gunk up and become effectively usless, id go coarse foam to fine foam to fine pad to bio with those rings under the coarse sponge for a more efficient filtering setup

    Thanks so much for this video, I really think the EHEIM classics are the best filters out there for reliability and longevity, those Germans know what they’re doing 😜
    Only complaint I have is the ugly green equipment, so I sprayed them with black plasti-dip. It’s a rubber coating and completely fish safe once dried :) just a tip for anyone out there like me who is an aesthetic freak lol.

    Thank you for this video. I was easily setup mine today and the priming is really easy. The only thing I did without in this video is I pour 1 gallon of water in the canister itself before I prime it. After sucking the tube, in just a matter of 3 seconds the water comes out already. This is my first ever canister filter. Why? because typically all other canister end up leaking and this is the only one that I know that doesn't leak. Again thank you

      +Big Al's Hi BigAl's. Loving my Eheim so far. I have a couple of questions re: the positioning of the spray bar. 1) Should the water spray out parallel to the water surface, or lightly upwards so that the water flow breaks the surface of the water? 2) How far below the water surface should the bar be...e.g. 1 inch? Thanks in advance for your help. Re: my set up - I have a 65 gallon tank.

    In regard to priming the system, here's what I came up with. A short length of plastic tubing about an inch longer than the spraybar (inside diameter 1/8 of an inch larger than the spraybar) that slides over the spraybar but seals against the plastic joiner tube that connects the spraybar to the inlet pipe. Suction as per normal and no disconnecting hoses and risking leaks from lose fittings.

    Hi guys. Thank you for the demonstration. I recently purchased a Eheim classic 2260. I am having trouble with the filter's vibration. I have wooden flooring and the filter causes so much vibration. The vibration is so strong that my feet get numb. I have purchased a thick stableliser pad and 2 carpets and placed them under the filter which only reduced a little bit of the vibration. Im so disappointed with this filter. Do you have any tips for this filter?

    Hey Big Al's, I bought a 2217 about a week ago, followed your instructions and it worked like a charm. However, the pressure out of the spray bar dropped drastically (probably by 30-40%) and my tank water just deteriorated with it. Any idea as to why might this be so?

  • @Smileytrev

    Thanks very much for making & posting this - very helpful video (and from a fellow video editor - well put together too!)
    I would consider pointing out more clearly which is the intake pipe and which is the output. I mean it was easy enough to figure out (as they would only fit properly one way round anyway) but still, just to make the next one completely idiot proof for other idiots like me, who haven't used a filter of this type before.

    I little more detail on how the inlet and outlet are connected to the tank would have been nice. I have a smaller model and with that big upside down U on the outlet the outlet pipe is about 3" down from the top of the tank. If I move it up that sucker sticks out like a sore thumb. I think I'm just going to add a single return outlet and can the spray bar.

  • @Sharak19
    @Sharak19 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have mixed feelings about this filter. On one hand, it looks very well designed. I mean most filters inlet and outlet are positioned together at the top, so I have a hard time understanding how the water actually cycles through the filter and media but also the filters and media themselves are small and scarce. This cannister is pretty straight forward. The filter and media fills the ENTIRE cannister. Water goes in from the bottom, gets sucked through all the media to the top and pumped back into the tank. The outlet spout is nice too, instead of one powerful jet of water disturbing everything it is nice smaller gentler spouts creating a gentle current. 5 stars for that simply effective design that seems to have flown past every other filter designers heads. On the other hand, an aquarium is a bacterial soup. That bacteria gets everywhere from the substrate to the decor to the tank walls to the filter tubes and the filter media. I WOULD NEVER STICK THE HOSES IN MY MOUTH AND SUCK to get the filter going. That's begging for disease. Seeing as how theres no other way to prime it that is the deal breaker for me.

      don't be afraid to cut the tubes, they come long and if you're worried you can always purchase more tubing. i set up my filter and put it under the water faucet for a few minutes just to let the water run through it before attaching the tubes and everything.

    • @impastorscott
      @impastorscott 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rinse everything with dechlorinated or aquarium water only! You should never run tap water through your filter media (even when it's new). Doing so will saturate everything with chlorine and it will take forever to colonize with beneficial bacteria.

      @courtneybellis3210 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gavin S - I kept the spray bar on the back wall and the intake on the right hand side wall. The green pipes are very ungainly. You may consider using glass lily pipes that look more elegant. In that case place them side by side with some gap.

    Thank you so much. I just bought 2213 and the original manual sucks. Without your guidance, I would be lost.

      And the newer versions (at least 2213) have a filtration media basket.

    Love the video!! Quick question though. Can I use this for a turtle tank? The tank isn’t filled all the way with water. Does the spray bar have to be submersed in water?.. or can I leave it on top to sort of create a water fall? Thanks so much.

    Can this filter be used for a small waterfall that flows into a shallow 20 gallon pond? I'm looking for something for box turtles as they only need 5-7 inches of water depth for soaking.

    I am wondering what is the time to do the sucking? after all the installation, before you turn on the power or you turn off the power?

      Thanks, I have been using the filter for years, but after relocation of it, it cannot drain water
