Am glad I stumbled across you, Shawn. This tip about the trail hand pinkie made a BIG difference for me. I am finally compressing the ball. Between this tip, the intermediate target and cut the grass, I was able to shoot my best 9 today. I was all over the place on the front nine but got it together for the back...an 11 stroke difference. Am a pretty happy camper.
Whew. You had me worried there for a minute because I use an inter-lock. But I'm doing it correctly. I have to use the interlock and hold on tight because of my club speed.Carry on.
it's amazing how you know just when to send me the grip video! lol. my driver is killing me right now and my irons are military.... left right left right... will be focusing on this tomorrow on the course! Thanks Team Wisdom!
Shawn, I am left-handed and I interlock my fingers. What I have found to get a firm, controlled STRONG grip, is to, while holding the club in the air, I close the face about 45 degrees and then grip the club in a neutral position. Then I place my club on the ground and, keeping my grip neutral, roll the face so that it is square behind the ball. This way my left hand comes under the club, and my right hand rolls up over the club, showing 3-4 knuckles. My grip looks like Sav and Mu's. I have never felt such power in the swing, and I grip the club firmly, and then swing back and up and then down and through for the most powerful shots I have ever hit in my 25 years of trying to play this aggravating game!!
There you have it! This is how we teach the grip! See my “weak grip vs strong grip shawn clement” and “through the ball vs at the ball” just for starters. Keep yourself tuned to this channel; this is where you want to park your golf game because everything we do is in line with what you wrote! 💪👌😀👍
@@golflessons I have found the hammer and nail analogy very helpful in figuring this out. When you hammer a nail into a board from the top, you HAVE to grip the hammer in a neutral way to properly execute the task. If you want to hammer the nail into the side of the board, and do it standing up, you HAVE to rotate your hand(s) into a strong position, and get your head BEHIND the hammer and board, to get the leverage on the hammer to properly execute this task!! To understand this better in regards to the golf grip, just grip the hammer as if it were a golf club. The concept becomes very obvious!! Thanks for all your lessons and advice, Shawn!!
100% agree with the wise three people on this one. In my view a correct grip 'presets' me into the correct posture etc. and supports the correct execution of my swing. It's a no-brainer!
Great videos. Enjoy watching them on a regular basis…very impressed with everyone’s power and the distance. Do you ever come up to the Ottawa area and do clinics?
Hey Jim! Too darn busy to travel anymore; we have developed an amazing online program that we are in the process of expanding and just invested over 100K in more simulators at our club. Hey Jason! See all my “throwing the club shawn clement” and “all about the release shawn clement” and keep your eyes open for this Saturday’s lesson at 9:00 AM eastern!
Shawn just came on board and in your earlier videos you had more of the Sav’s strong grip with club turned closed then with the setup the club squared up. The latest videos seems to me your more of a neutral grip. I am trying the club closed strong grip and seems to work but question is it the same with the driver? I am enjoying your teaching maybe I will help my push. BTW I did use an overlap but changed to a 10 finger grip works for me.
There are 2 things that influence the club’s squaring: grip club at address and efficiency of the release through the ball. My release is from a lifetime of swinging; as the release gets more efficient, then the less the grip needs to be strong. It is a long term process and you adjust as you go. same for driver and woods, some need to close more, some less; depends on the gear you have.
Hi Shawn, when I set up with face closed and then get behind the ball the face is square but when I want swing to the right intermediate point the face looks slightly open , is this right ?
Is this why I always get a blister on the right side of my right thumb and on the lower left side of my right index finger? (right handed). I do hit it far though (360 yards)
Blisters come from friction and friction comes from a loose grip; see “knife the grip shawn clement” an oldie but goodie and “best video on grip ever shawn clement” to get the hands wrapped around the grip in an air tight and vacuum sealed fashion.
My overlap pinky sits mostly on my index finger. I leave the right thumb mostly off as it will sometimes cause me to overclose the face on the downswing.
Yes, this definitely means the grip is not as efficient as it could be! See “best video on grip ever shawn clement” and an oldie but goodie “knife the grip shawn clement”
I literally have been using that grip you say not to do with your fingers interlocked all the way. I’ve been pulling every single shot left. Either draw left or hook left. I’ve been so scared of bringing my slice back I have not yet changed my grip. I think you may have convinced me to give it a change. Will practice on the range today and update.
Great video Sean. I always go back to your knife the grip video. Everything starts from here. Can I ask you a quick question? I use a strong grip like you recommend. Does the position of the thumb on the left hand stay in the exact same position as shown in this video? What i mean is when my hand turns left on the club for the strong position my thumb moves with my hand slightly to the right also. Should I get the thumb back on top or is it OK if its slightly right of the club? Thanks Sean
Go 10 finger or “baseball” grip! The grip videos on our premium channel are second to none; www.wisdomingolfpremium.com and in the “list of videos by date” you use the search box at the top and just type “grip” and watch them all! 😀👍
Shawn would it be common to use a stronger grip for the driver and weaker with the irons. I find i smash the ball well with the driver when using the strong grip but was wondering how you felt about irons. Maybe one less knuckle but still strong for the irons? Or same grip for all?
If you see my last “most overlooked detail with driver shawn clement” video, you will see why stronger with driver is for most; however, some are the opposite depending on the driver’s draw bias!
Great video on the grip. One small suggestion. The camera work should be focusing more on the hands so that we can follow along at home with our club as you explain it. Very difficult to see your hands when the camera is far away.
Yes, we have several kore on the grip and we sort of dropped the ball on this one here; see “best video on grip ever shawn clement” and you will really enjoy that one!
Shawn, why is it in the follow-through that my drip tends to collapse in my lead hand. The only way I can avoid a collapse grip, is for the back of my lead hand to face the sky on the backswing, and the back of my trail hand to face the sky on the follow-through! it must have to do with me not releasing properly, when I am starting the downswing it feels like my lead hand just wants to let go the club! I can not hold on
I see this all the time! On our premium channel we have some very valuable release videos: “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, “release fine tuning”, and “snap release polish” which will get your arm anatomy to release properly when you throw the club in the direction of the target. When the lead hand holds on, it is like a checked swing in baseball and the club head races past the hands and the club gets pried right out of the lead hand.
No worries, I have backup! See “best video on grip ever shawn clement” and “knife the grip shawn clement” as well as the “most important video on grip shawn clement”. Nice close ups in there!
