Wow. This past weekend there was SUCH a good vibe in the water....bodysurfers, surfers, boogies, all getting along....SO nice.

I surf and bodyboard. If the waves are small and hollow, I prefer to bodyboard. I paddled out into a lineup of about 20 surfers recently and got cheered on by about half of them when I got barrelled on my bodyboard. Three of them later told me they were thinking about getting into bodyboarding for some local shorepound breaks. One of the best surfers out there that day was on a Machado twin-fin fish; he was making the 6'-thruster guys look slow.
I'm amazed at how things have changed -- maybe it has something to do with Botha saving Geiselman's life at Pipeline, or maybe it has something to do with people like Jamie O'Brien and Dave Rostovich who will ride a wave on anything and who remind us that it's more about getting out in the water than anything else. But it's just good to be in the water with people who enjoy the waves without the ego trips.

My least favorite part about surfing, I now understand the rules of priority, but when I accidentally mess up people get way too mad, we’re all just out there to have fun but some guys take it way too seriously

After almost 30 years of bodyboarding I can say the bodyboarding vs surfer thing is bs. So many kooks in this video in waves where the shouldn't be regardless of craft.

Been bodyboarding since 1994 and I only really notice the rivalry at heavily local spots like Kirra and Burleigh (although due to localism I never even tried breaks like Snapper). I could be sitting solid in the pit and a stand up would be looking right at me while dropping in. Usually when that happens I take the high line and trip him with my legs as I sneak past. Never got into a fight about it, they know what they did and I take great pleasure in making them eat sh*t for trying to purposely drop in.

While this video is entertaining and disturbing at the same time, you can clearly see that it's not just bodyboarders being kooks, hardboard surfers are often acting the same. When it's big on the north shore, you quickly see who is a true waterman and who shouldn't even be out there.
Respect is often giving to anyone who has great water skills, wether they are bodysurfers, bodyboarders, long boarders, SUP and regular, performance hard boarders.

You need a helmet in conditions like this. It doesn't take much of a hit on the head to knock you unconscious. You can't hold your breath under water very well when you're knocked out.

First of all, why get rid of the term "Kook' when it is perfect? Second, The major problem is the kooks don't bother to look behind before attempting to drop in. Especially when it is crowded.
But they were dropping in and snaking actual surfers, I personally would be pretty pissed if someone dropped in on me on a perfect wave.

I've seen the photo used in the thumbnail from a photo in a surf magazine from the late 1980's. That's Gary Elkerton doing a super powerful straight legged bottom turn with a body boarder behind him. That photo alone is amazing. Wished they showed in the video.
The one that made me laugh the most was the two comp riders coming from opposite peaks, and both so hell bent on the finishing turn, that they both were willing to break their boards over it.

the issue is that there are too many jerks in the water, if a drop in happens you should swallow your pride and not try to keep going or hurt anyone. It can get pretty dangerous.

I've watching a bunch of KooK video, as someone that is new surfing. Weren't we all Kook's at one point, it took time and people letting us know our mistakes. As someone still learning, I try to avoid big crowds and learn that you have to humble yourself.
I think most people will accept an apology if the kook made an actual mistake and said sorry i didnt see you ect. Its when kooks go out into the line up with no disregard for other people or paddle out into lineups out of their skill level that there is going to be a problem
I bodyboard but I follow the rules and wait till it’s my turn to catch a wave.
At most breaks I've surfed its all about position relative to the wave. The person who is deepest gets the wave. I've read comments about taking "turns", and I've done it with friends or people I've started chatting with in the water; but I've never known that to be a rule in any way.

Had a case few years ago, first time being in the water in many years at my old home break, borrowed board. Young kid (stand up) kept on dropping in on me. Snaking.
Was only about 5ft at best.
Dropped in on me 1st time, I let it go.
Then snaked. Let it go.
Snaked again, he seemed annoyed that he couldn't manoeuvre because I had a firm grip on his leg rope.
Dropped in one more time but I was carrying more speed, made a hard turn off the bottom and plowed straight through him in his board.
Lost his shit at me and I told him to show some fucken respect and etiquette.
Bloke paddles over to see what's going on, recognises me from many years ago and tells the little prick to "shut your fucking mouth and fuck off, this guys been riding this break since before you were a twinkle in your dad's eye. I've seen this guy charge waves you wouldn't have have the stones to pull into and far bigger than you've ever ridden."
Kid seem to have trouble getting his head around the fact that a stand-up came in defence of the bodyboarder.
We had a laugh about it. After the sesh we ended up having a beer at the pub and talked about how the town has changed.

After the third drop in by a "professional/model' surfer at Laniakea, I grabbed his rail and flipped him and board. We both ate it and he paddled in without a word. Later, I found a 12" ding on my right side rail embedded with his hair.

I went bodyboarding at Ali'i beach and it was just me and my 2 cousins bodyboarding out there. All the surfers was cool and we all got along just fine with them.
