The hour meter difference is this. The stock meter works on the wheel turning and the trail tech is actual running time of the bike. So when the bike sits and idles, the stock hour meter isn't triggered but the tt is. Hope that helps.
youre right and I think its the stupidest thing on earth haha. Why on earth KTM would put an ENGINE HOUR METER to run only when the wheel is spinning is beyond me. thats what the mileage is there for KTM so u know har far your bike has ridden. Some people like to know how many hours the engine has on it. idle hours are hours nonetheless. I noticed this when I swapped my front wheel on my XCW for a race just wanted to use a different tire and didnt feel like changing the tire on the wheel just for one race. I noticed my cluster said the same hours after the race and thats when I realized how dumb KTM was lol.
Not sure if that's true. When i got my new 2018 last winter I ran it twice for 15 min each time to break in everything (without riding it) and it recorded that half and hour.
Vachau 01 yes that’s not true I ran my 2018 300 xc two times when first got it not rode it just started it it had .2 tenths of an hour on it so it doesn’t go by the rear wheel spinning
I have a 2014 ktm 250 sx i put a lectron carberator on it and set up for track and trail and its better than magic highly reccomend a lectron upgrade makes the 2 stroke feel like a 4 stroke but you still have a rippin power band
I know this is an older video. Came across it just looking around. Beautiful bike in the video. I’d like to find one like it as I return to riding. The new ones are pricey for sure. I hope you’ve enjoyed these 6 years since making the video. Still have the bike, or have you upgraded??
How does the Trail Tech tachometer let you know when to adjust the air screw on the carb? I have the same bike and carb as you, but can't get the bike perfect yet. I am a newbie
Great video! Regarding the ignition switch you installed, do you notice a real difference in the two maps? Do you use them both? Would you buy it again? I've got a 250 xc-w tpi on order and and reading mixed reviews about these switches . Thank you again!
Sorry for the delay responding. I don't have the part number, but I just looked up the 300XCW Six Days edition on RMATVMC and bought it there. The six days edition comes standard with the switch. Thanks for watching.
Nice bike. Im shopping for a 2 stroke and wanted your feedback in the 250 vs 300. Have you had a chance to compare, and what was the makuni csrb doing thst was so much trouble?
This bike was lacking low end in stock form. I did the SX head and the Keihin carb together to increase low end. The Mikuni carb was pretty good with the JD jet kit but I never could get it just right. For example it would constantly stall on downhill sections when I had the clutch in. I adjusted float level a few times to try to remedy that and never could get it corrected. The Keihin carbs are known for better low end response and that carb combined with the SX head had the exact result I was looking for. This bike has low end power close to a 300 but still revs like a 250. I have a friend with a 300XC and my bike is very comparable to his bike on low end power.
Dirt Biking with Donnie and Chase that's a great explanation and sounds like you found a thorough remedy. My fear of getting the 300 is its just gonna be a lugger and when it gets on the pipe it will be too hot to handle. Thinking the 250 will be more fun and still have plenty of power. People say 300 is easier.. put it third and go...half the fun is finding and being in the right gear for me. I an probably splitting hairs though.
Great reveiw. I wanna do the tubeless on my bike when I go to replace my tires. I agree the brake pedal is easy to miss. I have thought about the left hand brake. Stay safe
Thanks. I have tubliss on front and rear now and I really like it. I could have done a much better job on the video, if I'd known how many views it would accumulate I would have taken more time with it. :-)
Trust me I know the feeling and I think thats why so many fellas does so many reviews even on silly things. How to videos is another that does well. I made a video, how to hookup sway bars on a rv, I honestly only made it picking on another youtuber and that video is killing it haha. Stay safe
Holy cow I didn't know enduro engineering made soft seats, I have to get one of those. Stock seat on the 2018 xcw tpi is harsh. I have a pair of their bark Buster's on the way
Nir Hason I’ve been very pleased with the performance of the Keihin carb with the JD jet kit. I have about 100 hours on the bike now and it is still working great. Great performance and no issues at all.
Awesome. I’m in Leeds. Guys at Max are great. Bought my 2019 250xc-w there last week. Definitely like some of the mods you’ve done, will steal some of your ideas. Ride safe!
Chris Rochester Likewise, we enjoyed it as well. The TTR chain guide came from fisherfabhouse.com I checked and they have one available for the TTR-230.
@@DirtBikingwithDonnie This video got recommended lol. I knew I'd watched it. But hey I put the jd gasket kit in my mikuni. The carb had a leaky gasket from factory and a bad o ring. After this fix the mikuni tmx works amazingly good. I had it running good before but would get a rich condition at idle and quarter throttle. Was scratching my head. Finally fixed. Cheers man.
shogun678 I may order that kit for mine and try it again. It would be a good video opportunity. I can’t believe TH-cam is still recommending this vid, it’s a little embarrassing, lol. Anyway, I hope you’ll check out some of my more recent vids. Thanks for watching.

You can hear the fan doing its job when I’m stuck on a hill. th-cam.com/video/vhKlpnkMLl8/w-d-xo.html
Nice mods to the bike. I'm thinking about changing my carb and reeds right away so I don't have any issues. Did you feel a decent change in power with the head mod?
Pony Down 418 My initial impression with the head mod is increased low end, which is where this bike was lacking. But I’ve only ridden around my house. I’m headed out riding today and will have a better answer after a full day of riding.
Dirt Biking with Donnie and Chase - got ya. I have a 300 so I'm guessing that I should hopefully have some decent low end torque. I'll be waiting for your report back. Have fun!!!
Pony Down 418 The carb change and the cylinder head change together completely change the engine character of the bike, in a good way. Low end is significantly better now, as well as mid and high end. The carb has really made it run crisp and clean. I’m considering the VForce 4 reeds as my next mod as I’ve read bad things about the stock reeds breaking. Let me know if you get new reeds. I would be interested in the ones you get and how they work.
Dirt Biking with Donnie and Chase thanks for the info on the changes. Yea it looks like my first mods for the bike will be the v force reeds and the carb conversion. I'll report back once I get things going. It might be a little bit of time though since spring hasn't hit here yet.
Cool beans, dude! I got an XC-W 250 last December, too. I got the TPI (Transfer Port fuel Injection) model. I’m pretty short and old (haven’t ridden in 30 years!). My first blasphemous contra-mod was to lower the suspension by 2 inches (also lowered my net worth by an additional $500!). Just like you I had Cycras installed before rolling it out my dealer’s door. Then to further defang the beastie I installed the same MAP switch which brings me to the real point of my response to your posting... Which is the slower MAP ‘traction’ setting? Position number one or two? Both are terrifying to me at times! That said, over thirty years ago I had all the following two strokes: from an itty-bitty 50cc mini to an RZ 350 Yamaha triple street knee-dragger with Hon, Kaw, Yam, Suz 125/250 motocrossers sprinkled between those extremes. This new KTM is awesome! No carb to jet, no oil premixing, no worries! Just pour oil in one tank and gas in the other and have faith in the KTM engineers. I made some other modifications culminating in an inspection sticker and a license plate. I’ve added a keyswitch to deter its theft. I can buzz up my garage door, ride out my driveway into town, pull up to a gas station, add pump premium petrol, mosey on up the hiway and signal with my blinkers when I see a dirt trail into the mountains I care to explore. After my TPI and I get filthy in the woods we merge legally back into traffic, return up my driveway, I press my garage door opener conveniently positioned behind the bike’s light shroud (how effin cool is that!) and roll back inside satisfied 🤗. (BTW, Envy your hardwood garage floor.)
Timothy Acord Congrats on getting one of those elusive TPI bikes. Sounds like you’ve made some great mods. Have you considered doing a video? I haven’t seen many mod videos on the TPI. Setting 2 on the switch is the traction map but, like you, I’ve found there’s very little difference. I’ve found changing the power valve spring (I’m running the green) is the most effective way to control the power delivery on my bike.
Dirt Biking with Donnie and Chase Funny thing is the TPIs don’t come with any additional power valve springs. Apparently the engineers at KTM are so proud of their accomplishments that the want the end users to leave well enough alone. I’m just a consumer of videos, not a producer. I appreciate people like you sharing great content. I’m looking for riding buddies though. If you are interested are you near West Virginia?
aaron johnson, I hope that you are enjoying your TPI as much as I like mine. I’m sorry but I don’t know if the exhaust valve can be replaced on it. I trust the KTM engineers to have integrated the engine’s systems far better than me tweaking their product. I did, however, add the same mapping mod as Donnie. The stock XC-Ws (including our TPI version) have the ability to alter their engine mapping to a ‘traction’ mode from the preset ‘performance’ mode. All you have to do is disconnect an in-line wire hidden beneath the fuel tank. Obviously that is very inconvenient. The Six Days XC-Ws have a switch as Donnie describes that integrates with the bike’s lever perch. I chose to put that accessory mapping switch on my front brake’s perch. All the switch does is ‘open’ the engine mapping circuit (position number two = traction) or ‘close’ the circuit (position one = performance) without taking off your tank to unhook a wire. You might try giving yourself the ability to change your TPI’s behavior on the fly in a way that KTM has designed into the machine rather than altering it in a way that might compromise the engineered system as a whole. The mapping switch was about $80 and really simple to install. Good Luck!👍
Mate of mine went Lectron carb on his 18 XC and loves it
