Hi, I have a few class 73s also, I have found that the biggest cause of poor running over points was dirty wheels/pickup points etc and the best way to remedy that is with a good clean with some Isopropyl alcohol

This is a common problem on these Dapol models. The solution is straightforward depending on your skills. The problem is caused by the design of the pickups. The internal phosphor bronze pickup rest on the inside of the brass bearings. Good idea but Dapol’s use of non-conducting oil and grease which cover these bearings and contact is lost. Also, the phosphor bronze pickups during factory build can be distorted and not actually make contact with the bearing.
The solution to reasonable improvement, without opening the bogies up if your worried about warranty is:
    1. clean wheels
    2. Fit stayalive
    The second solution is:
    1. to open bogies and increase pressure by bending pickup pressure on bearing
    2. Clean pickups and gears throughly and replace lubrication with conducting oil or grease like Electrolube.
    Third solution:
Fit new pickups on outside in the standard way of wire or metal strip resting on the inside of the wheels. There is plenty of room to do this. Leave everything else in place - these are additional pickups.
Having said all that, your first and easiest solution is to fit stayalive but won’t t solve problem if the 73 is initially on the track without electrical contact.
