The omni is more of a centered sound, but I usually do the cardiod mics at C3 and C5 and set them at 10 and 2 o'clock. I like the presentation of the pianist with left hand on the left and right hand on the right. I love Omni's for ensemble work about 7 feet up and 27" apart in a room with a tall ceiling and no ambient noise in the room.
The omni sound is superior imo, the soundstage really shows itself and the imaging of the keyboard really shines, sound much more fun than the close cardioid sound.
I'd prefer the room omnis mixed in just a little hotter and forget the reverb. If you think you need reverb, move the omnis farther away. Either way though, small diaphragm mics just don't do a piano justice. Give me a AKG 414.
As a pianist, I am looking for a mic recommendation for recording the piano. The microphones used in this video do not seem to capture the detail or wide frequencies in the piano tone, so overall all of the samples sound a bit dull. I like having a mix of the close and room miking.
I hear the bass notes played by the left hand in my right ear and the high notes of the right hand in my left ear. For a recording would you not pan things as the pianist would hear them rather than the pan arrangement of someone sitting listening at the side out in the audience?
Thanks for this info - I'm a classical pianist who for years has been struggling to record the instrument in a satisfactory way. Two notes: 1 - I've found that having mics at the very back ; ie on the soundboard but not on strings, had a very interesting sound. The strings, especially on new steinways, can sound a hint like a guitar at times. 2 - I find most recordings completely lack the BASS sound that a grand piano really has. Every version of your recording here suffers from this as well - to me this sounds like an upright with a great tone, not a 6-7' grand. Is there a way to capture this without post-processing cheesy bass boost?
what if i only have two mics, the behringer c2? What is the best way to place them? The result i have on a grand piano is a very dry sound witouth bass. I appreciate if you help me :)
Interesting. I found the sound to be very low in top end. Kind of mellow sounding.. lacking in detail.. it’s a sound or colour I have heard before. Not my cup of tea. I was also listening on Apple air pods and found it hard to hear a huge difference between mics .. nice playing btw :) and just so you know I had listened to 3 examples of other piano recordings before this one .was that the intention? Is a really interesting colour .
I have access to these mics (in matched pairs): Neumann M49, Neumann M149, Neumann M250, Neumann M269, Coles, RCA MI 6203. Which ones would you choose to record a Yamaha C7? My mixing console only allows for 6 simultaneous mics. Thanx!
This was helpful. What is the spacing of your omni mics in this example? I've got a pair of AKG Omni mics I'd like to try for room pick up. I'm very happy with two large capsule Audix mics for up close. Thanks.
so its spaced pair vs XY????!!! of course xy sounds more focused. But if you put cardioids in the spaced position would actually get more width. Also there's a distance factor as a point of comparison...you'd naturally end up distancing the cardioid further away. Also, jazz style and sound for Debussy? Um...OK.
How can I record the Grand Piano without the rattling sound that is created from using the sustain pedal and also all the movement that happens inside of the piano?
Thanks for your Vlog. I refer your setup. I use the "SmartRig+, stereo, Max level" "SUGAR DM-830A microphones x2 ", "DSLR Canon 5D3 ,mic preamp about +1/4 " This could be done on video and audio at the same file. I just changed the mov of file to mp4 on computer. th-cam.com/video/DQIKlRLWm9A/w-d-xo.html
I like how they use the word "pro" when selling crap to consumers. NO ONE EVER CALLS A GATES TRANSMITTER PRO AUDIO BECAUSE NO CONSUMER EVER BUYS A GATES TRANSMITTER! (I REST MY CASE)
I prefer the omni sdc's inside the piano, gorgeous!

Excellent information. Excellent presentation. And the choice of Debussy was perfect.

This video goes straight to the point. I learned stuff, so for me it was worth watching
I'm a spaced omni man myself, and this confirms why. But good job combining the two, you almost make a US Steinway sound human.
Aren't all steinways us?
@@justinjager8412 Most are german
@@jonasdaverio9369 In the US? Nope.
@@jonaszepog1829 They didn't ask about Steinway in the US specifically

How do you deal with the noise from the Dampeners? I found them to be very annoying at around 6:00
Dont want to try any more techniques, will setup like your distanced omni setup with my Rode NT5 (omni cap) because it sounded fantastic.
you compensate the delay between the omnis and the ones inside the piano when you mix all of them?
I hear the bass notes played by the left hand in my right ear and the high notes of the right hand in my left ear. For a recording would you not pan things as the pianist would hear them rather than the pan arrangement of someone sitting listening at the side out in the audience?
Lovely playing, really like your approach to the keyboard. Nice piano too.
Exactly the omnidirectional catch all of the body side from piano. So i chose omni for piano recording
Thank you for sharing this, i have a simular recording project next month.

For your second point, New York Steinways can sound quite a tad bit brighter than Hamburg Steinways. :/
You could add a large diaphragm microphone near the bass strings.
Can the omni microphone be replaced with big cardioid condensors and reach the same effect?
Thank you so much for posting the video!
This is so bloody good.
What console is that?
Sounds like you forgot to align the phase of the close mics.

I was thinking just the same, ( I was listening with DT 770)
Better room means less recording problems. Natural sound comes from the acoustics

What do you think about using Tube Mic to record classical piano pieces? Such as Sterling St 66 tube mic.

Nice Steinway!
Hi,
The mics are connected to the computer? What kind of power supply for the mics for amplifying? Thanks!
Merci.
I don't here much different between the cartoid and the zombie microphones

Hi! Very interesting video! I would like to know what preset did you use?

Mics should be placed
12-18 inches above the screen. Otherwise you will hear the dampers and other piano noises.
Wich are the omni? The vertical ones into the piano? Thanx
Yes
I like the Omnis!
How can I record the Grand Piano without the rattling sound that is created from using the sustain pedal and also all the movement that happens inside of the piano?
try putting the microphones no too close to the dampers
What kind of mic stands are those?
Thanks for the video!
Is there a way to minimize the noise from the pedal when recording with cardioid close to strings?
Time for the piano tech to come and make a house call. I do hear some of this on some piano recordings from time to time, but it can be made quiet.
Very nice video, liked you're playing and the recordings. Unfortunately your control rooms sounds aweful, isn't it ?
Name of song?
as he started mixing it just got muddier to me. shows the value of proper room acoustics.
is he using 1 mic for the omni version?
This is a Steinway B - correct?
Hey what would be the best way to set up a "neumann tlm 103" to mic a piano?
If your asking that then you don't deserve a Neumann
Could be a student at a university with one in their inventory. I know my university has one.

The Girl with Flaxen Hair by Claude Debussy. It is one of his preludes.
+solosteven37 thanks!
but basically played and recorded in a non-Debussy jazz style, for some reason
what song is this??
Good question.
the girl with the flaxen hair - claude debussy.

Can we have a similar video with a professional pianist?
Maybe you can practice for 30 years and do one. Maybe

Helpful video, but in all cases there still seems to something a bit muffled to my ears. Not quite clear in sound.

I didn't like the mix. It losses a little clarity for me...
agreed, the best IMO was the one with the omni close and unmixed...
Phasing issues with the spaced pair. The curse of piano capture.

What are yoouu doooing heere!?? The Californians
Mud recording, not the best (actually not even good) i heard for piano recordings.

Exactly. Where's the air? May as well be using a VST.

A couple of others have used high quality ribbons inside the piano and Omni outside to avoid any mechanical sounds of the piano.
