When sewing the two raw edges together I would use a ladder stitch (I think another name for it is an invisible stitch). There are tons of easy tutorials on how to do that on TH-cam and the stitch will give the scrunchies a more professional look and overall make them more stable!

My mum just made a scrunchie for me the exact way you did except from that she hand sewn it and trust me, this is the ORIGINAL way to make a scrunchie since she has made them as well. Thank you for this tutorial I will for sure use it in my free time.
Oh my goodness I went through so much to make 1 scrunchie idk why I didn't just stop So basically I hand sewed the entire thing due to sewing machine being out of commission The fabric was thick velvet so it was very hard to turn inside out It was a dark royal blue colour so I couldn't see the stitching And that's just the beginning but in the end I ended up with a fully functional scrunchie and it's beautiful 😍 Oh, also if you're hand sewing and doubling up the thread, I suggest making the thread 3 times as long as your fabric with a little bit more for tying a knot (I made different sizes and all had perfect thread length cause of this) then doubling and knotting ❤️❤️❤️
Fun little tip; when I make scrunchies, I kill 2 birds with one stone and safety pin the elastic at the same point you do at 1.50, so when I turn the fabric the right way, it threads the elastic at the same time. It just makes it quicker. 😊

Maddy Turpin you can use a regular hair band and then after tying your hair up in a ponytail or whatever you can put the scrunchie over it for looks, this way it won't rip(did that make sense lol)

The hand stitches needs to be more secure. It looks like it was going to fall apart. Was there are reason why you didn't sew it on the machine with matching thread?
she probably did the different color thread to show people how she sewed it because if it was the same color then we wouldn’t be able to see what she did
A little life hack. If you’re having trouble getting the elastic through put a safety pin on the end that you put into the fabric so it’s easier to push through to the other side.

I would say that to use a no-show stitch for the raw edges on the scrunchie when you're closing the fabric. Itll make it look 100% better than just a normal random stitch.

If you don’t have any elastic then you can use the actual elastic(for your hair) and just cut it in half then sew it at the end

Use a ladder or invisible stitch when hand sewing. You can't see any threads when finished and it's much stronger than having exposed threads
