After getting FEMUR in two and a half minutes and I checked to see that this was an 8 minute video, I knew this was going to be gold! LATER -> LEMUR for me today after getting STARE in one yesterday.
Nice job Doug! Quite surprised you've never heard of a lemur! Having had 5 children and 4 grandchildren, I've spent many happy hours at zoos and wildlife parks. Lemurs are very interesting animals. A 5 for me too.... ORATE CUPID RULER FLEUR LEMUR Somewhat stupid of me typing in RULER when U was already in the wrong place, but it placed the R and got me an L!
Happy New Year Doug and to all. Got it in 5 but I too learned a new word today. After my 4th guess of femur, I just kept trying letters until Lemur lit up.
I was a new Wordle player in 2024. I'd played before 2024, but just a game once in a while, wasn't in the daily habit. On January 31, I downloaded the app and played every day since then. So, 336 consecutive days of stats. I got 332 of the 336 puzzles in 2024 that I played and have stats for and I'm currently on a streak of 149.
This was my first year of Wordle... and actually was a bit surprised I liked it as much I do, since I am more a numbers person than a word person. (I solve Sudoku puzzles several days a week). Some year end stats: 359 games played; "fours"' accounted for 38% of solves, "threes at 33%, "fives" at 17%, "twos" at 6%, and sixes at 5%. Longest streak was 145. Today I had 3 words in mind for the second guess (Lever, Leper, and Lemur)... a 1 in 3 chance for a "2". But no such luck. Here's how it went.... LEARN (Very productive..... "L" and "E" in position, "R" out of position.) LEVER ("R" joins "L" and "E" in position.... No double E.) LEMUR (A three-word solve today.) ---- I want to wish everyone a "Happy New Year", and a 2025 full of 2-word solves!
Leaping Lemurs, Doug. I learned about the lemur from Zoboomafoo and Dora and Diego, the Explorers, and visiting the Cape May Zoo with my grandson 20 years ago. My grandson loved them. Today started a new era for me. What do I do without my trusty “stare”? So I went crazy and started with “aster”. Well, we’ve had flowers before. So a “3” for me today. astER- doiLy- LEMUR
An Anagram. Smart thinking. That's what I did after stale & slate were Wordle solutions. It's the frequency of the letters in a start word to make solving easier that's important. Congratulations again.
Happy New Year to Doug, Cassandra & all! Hope we all have even more Wordle luck in 2025! 4 today for me... Neato, Peril, Lever, Lemur! I started playing 225 days ago, and so far I've kept my streak of 225. Today, that is really saying something because I ended up wiping out my computer inadvertently and my streak was not there. But then I retrieved it, as it did recognize me after the fact. So I reset it and we're all good. Phew!!!
A 3 with LANCE, VIPER AND LEMUR. I used viper to weed out the liver, leper, lover, level, etc., words. That left me with one possibility, WordleBot said. My streak is at 1,056.
I don't know about American English, but in British English it's pronounced to rhyme with the way you said femur. Many thanks for all your videos in 2024 - great entertainment. Happy New Year to you and Cassandra. 😊🇬🇧
What makes me crazy is when I don't stop to check spelling before a guess. After the second guess I thought first of lemer, (because that's how I hear it pronounced) then rejected it. It came back to haunt me. :) Still better than a seven, I guess. On to 2025! yummy-gamut-demur-lemur was my chain today.
Doug, I always solve Wordle before I watch you. If you've seen the movie Madagascar you would remember lemurs. They are specific to Madagascar but are found in some zoos in the United States. We saw some at the Smithsonian Zoo. Fascinating.
The best part of this video Doug, wasn't that you didn't know lemur (in the primate family) ... but rather how you pronounced it! Loved it! It's LEE-mur (long e sound, similar to the word femur). Great stuff, Happy New Year
I was down to the last guess and LEMUR was the first to come to me, I didn't even think of FEMUR. Luck saved the day. Among lemurs, my favorite ones are ring-tailed lemurs.
I kept getting the letters in the wrong place, until I had no choice left. SWORD - BRUNT - PURGE ULCER - four out of five letters, only one word left LEMUR

After yesterday's mind blowing hole-in-one, there was some questioning about whether I would continue to start with the word STARE. Indeed I will. So there's that. When that gave me the R and E in yellow, I immediately became concerned about an ER ending. To test that -- and to get more intel on the R -- I went for RIDER. That told me I wasn't looking at the ER ending at all, which I considered good news. To then test the E, I chose a word that worked out amazingly well for me. LEECH gave me LExxR. The only word that made sense at that point was LEMUR. So I closed the year with a final par four. My December average was 3.65, which was my third best month of all time (about a year and a quarter). My 2024 average was 3.82, a marked improvement over my 4.10 average in 2023. (I think I was too locked in on starting with STARE/DOILY/BUNCH in those days and wasted opportunities to narrow my target.) My all time average is now at 3.89 with a standard deviation of 0.88. Current streak at 470, with no hope of getting another "one guess solve".
Well done on the one guess solve yesterday! May I ask why you wouldn’t want to change your starting word to another word that hasn’t been used before? There are plenty of good starting words still out there! You can certainly play the game however you’d like!!! But the big thrill for me is trying to get it in one! I’ve gotten two one-guessers since I started playing daily 2 years ago and I immediately pick a new starting word the next day to go for more!
Because for me, while it was a thrill to get it in one, my objective is to find the solution. And I feel that STARE is the best word, for me anyway, to get the ball rolling on that endeavor. Five great letters. The two most common vowels. The S in the first spot where it often goes. The E in the final spot where it often goes. Plus, after fifteen months of using that starting word, I’ve come to recognize the best ways to approach the problem. I know the key words to follow up. Words like doily, chunk, bunch, chomp, etcetera. So it’s also a matter of comfort, I guess.
Congratulations on your statistical success with Wordle. My standard deviation is fairly close to yours. Glad there are others who also stick with their start word even though the word has been a solve. It's easier to extrapolate frequently used letters from them such as s, t, e, a when solving Wordle.
@@bunpeishiratori5849 got it! Sounds like you’ve definitely thought it through then! 😊 that’s the fun thing about Wordle - everyone has their approach! Like Doug, he has a new starting word every day! I am not that brave and see what you mean by a matter of comfort as well!
