Preparing and planting the hay field after it was accidentally sprayed with herbicide.

  • Our Hay Field was Accidentally sprayed with Herbicide a couple months ago. It killed a good portion of the Hay I planted. We have decided to start all over and replant the Hay Field Again with the same seed. This time it will be a fall planting and we re-did the soil test. We fertilized the field and added pelleted lime to the field to adjust the PH of the soil. We disked the field several times before planting the hay seed. Hopefully the seed will grow this fall and we will have a good hay field in the spring. Everything is now settled with the company that accidentally sprayed the field, and it now behind us and we can move on to other things.

Glad to hear you had a somewhat amicable resolution. You're right, it's probably going to be a better field than it was originally! And you still put a whole bunch of your own work into it with all that disking.

Glad that an attempt is being made to make you whole again. Thank goodness the farmer was willing to help. In the future I'd put up gates separating the two fields as well as no trespassing signs specifically stating that your field is off limits to everyone including anyone who does business with your farmer.

Take a length chain link fencing and some chain to hook it onto the back of your disk , this should smooth out the ground when disking

I'm glad that it seems it's working out for you. Setbacks and delays are something that we have had to deal with on our property. Don't let it get you down. It will eventually come and work itself out. One thing that I have always thought regarding land/livestock is this. If it's "easy" then it probably isn't worth doing, otherwise there would be a lot more people doing it. I am "fighting a battle" right now just to get power and a well on my property for our future retirement place. The power company won't provide power for the camping trailer that we use on the weekends because "they don't want us living in it". Well we don't and wouldn't. We have a home that we live in and use the camping trailer on the weekends when we work on our property. I am having a well drilled so that we can tell the county that we need power for the well for "livestock and irrigation".
My point in all of this is that setbacks and delays are just that. Do the extra work to resolve the reason for the setbacks and don't be in a hurry.

I live by railroad tracks, they spray for weeds, the machine they had was new and the boom was 17 feet longer then before, they wipe all most a 1/2 acre of my yard out, but I had to go to court over it. Disagree with your landscaper/farmer. Clods act as barriers to prevent washout during heavy rain events. I'm glad you got this in your rear view mirror Evan. Sounds like you got a decent outcome. Hopefully your grass comes up to a good stand.
Wish you would have bought your fertilizer from another company though. Those guys made back some of that money they paid for the hay bales, with profit from the fertilizer you bought. Like you said, not a perfect world. Pretty sad that the company owner did exactly what many of us told you would happen. That formula for dealing with PR problems is so universal, I now believe it's in an agricultural company policy manual they all use. Their word means nothing.

I hope that needing to work the soil with the disc MULTIPLE (6+) times does not harm the quality of the soil. Realize it is mostly clay but my experience is the more you till the less productive the field may be. Paying for the seed , some soil enhancments, hay and ? For sure is the absolute least the Agri Service company who sprayed should do in my opinion. The guy who conceded addtl offerings to you was probably "retired" . Too bad your land tenant is stuck in the middle. Hate lawyers but it sounds like that Company you are dealing with is not very reputable ...poor herbicide mgt s a bad problem to have on your land .
