    The longines spirit is a watch I hated and misjudged until I held it by hand. It’s quality is insane. I bought it over the Tag Heur Carrera 5 and Tudor. Plus I love everything the Spirit stands for, I can somehow relate to it. It’s a new take for longines, modern new design with vintage elements with their chronometer precision, it’s their new definition of perfection. The watch easily rivals watches at far higher price points. The dial and case has soo much more dimension and details. The only thing that disappoints me about the Spirit is No open case back. I think that’s where IWC does better. Longines is doing great things today !

      I was extremely surprised as well as a previous owner of the IWC Pilot Mark Series and also when I had the Longines Spirit in hand, it just blew my expectations away. On video and pictures the quality isn’t as apparent, but in hand is a totally different feeling

    Love both watches for their own reason. The new Spirit line actually hints to me of the old IWC spitfires. If a military style pilot watch of the bhur style is what you want, then you 100% don't want to get this. Comparing the two is a little unfair in many grounds, because you are stuck with say...'for the money, it's this, for the money it's that'. Both watches and both brands have plenty of merit, a seasoned collector will celebrate both.

    • @twosecondswatch
      @twosecondswatch  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree - however the reality is price is a really big factor in most people purchases and I believe the longines here is a great alternative. But yes in a world where money and value is not a factor then you can go for both in the collection.

    Thanks for the detailed review! I am considering to add a Longines of the Spirit series to my collection soon, particularly the chronograph. I already own 2 Longines (Hyrdoconquest and Conquest Chrono) plus Longines was my first quality watch that I bought with my own hard earned money at the age of 16 back in 1976. I wish I still had that manual wind chronograph! Anyway, just a couple of comments about Longines… Unfortunately they have too many models to choose from which makes it too difficult to decide when buying. Secondly, they do not hold value like an IWC, Omega, Rolex etc but on the pus side they can usually be found at considerable discounts unlike the brands mentioned, which makes them an even better value in that respect. Finally…Serviceability. I am currently having a an automatic Hydroconquest serviced by Longines and the cost is considerably less ($135) compared to a basic service of the other brands mentioned which typically run $300-500.
    All that makes Longines very affordable. Thanks again for your review!

    The Longines looks really nice (apart from the stars) and offers a lot of value for money. However, IWC Mark XX plays in a different league, not only price and prestige, but also in quality finishing. Moreover, IWC Mark XX looks less playful, more professional and maybe even boring compared to the Longines. However, I love the Mark XX and your video made me immediately put it on my wrist again…

      An overpriced and overrated “tool watch”.
      At US$ 6000+, of the top of my head, there a list of Omegas, GS, Breitling, Zenith and OP’s (yes, even at mark ups) that are overall better. And JLC before the hike this year, but if talking about hike, then IWC can share its perspective. Heck I would even some Sinn.
      But taste is individualized and watches are nothing more than jewelry for men.
      So wear what you like, but if talking about leagues, then IWC is out of its depths with those lineup.

    I am glad you called IWC out for only putting the lume at the 3/6/9/12 positions, especially when it's all around on the Big Pilot 43. I think the IWC has its place, and the bracelet looks really nice (haven't had a chance to try the bracelet model on). You just get a lot more value for your money with the Spirit. I know the IWC is built well and that new movement is finally worthy of the price point, but it really just looks a lot like something I could get from Stowa or Laco that also have great history. The Spirit is kind of this great combination of a pilot and field watch at the same time that I really like, plus the applied numerals and little details like the diamond markers lining up with the diamond on the second hand make it really nice. The 37mm gets rid of the date issue IMO, but the titanium model also completely removes that from the equation.

    • @twosecondswatch
      @twosecondswatch  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Thanks for sharing and your detailed analysis and opinion. I don’t understand why no one else seems to be bothered about the lume being 3/6/9/12, when all the other flieger type watches can lume it all completely. Is it a heritage reason (due to the mark 11) or is it just a cost saving measure? I understand the mark 11,12 having the crosshair lume due to the design, but you can clearly see that the current mark XX no looks anything like the Mark 11 and 12 - hence all numerals should be lumed!

    • @nash9625

      I was going to buy the IWC. The 5 day power reserve intrigued me. I like to change watches and hate setting the time and date. The reason I didn’t pull the trigger is IWC wants $1000 plus for a bracelet. Ridiculous. I can get the Mark XX for about $4750 on a strap. Dealers want around $6,000 for the exact same watch on a bracelet.

    • @twosecondswatch
      @twosecondswatch  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info. I wasn’t aware that model had full lume, if it does then perhaps they want to tie it to the previous design language of the Mark 12 which has a crosshair dial design. Problem is: this watch doesn’t have the crosshair design… does it? It’s kinda a loss to me

    • @twosecondswatch

    The Val Fleurier movement used in both the IWC Mark XX and Ingenieur has a small flaw. When you pull out the crown to hack, the minute hand jumps a full 3~4mins. Something I cannot accept for a watch in these price range. Probably the reason why Panerai remove the hacking feature from the same Val Fleurier movement used in their P.900 calibre.

      My IWC MkXX was defective for the jumping minute hand, defective date wheel that changed dates randomly, and it kept wildly inaccurate time. It is back at the AD under warranty. But I lost confidence in the company as others have noted defects in the movement. The shill media grossly misrepresented the quality of the IWC Mk XX.

    Today I ordered the Longines Spirit. I've watched countless videos over the last few weeks. For me, however, it was a choice between the Longines Spirit and the Tudor Ranger. Ok, the Ranger is not a classic pilot's watch, but here too I asked myself, is it justified that the Tudor Ranger is almost 1000€ more expensive? Definitely not. You make some solid points and as much as I love the Spirit the long lug to lug make it an awkward looking watch on the wrist. If they get the lug to lug down the sure, it would be better but as it is I would prefer the Mark XX.

    • @twosecondswatch
      @twosecondswatch  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the long lugs do make it wear a little larger on a smaller wrist. However the actual impact is not that bad on a leather strap, I know it looks a little long on my 6 inch wrist, but honestly it wears very well and I never had any issues even with a long sleeved shirt. It can slide underneath a cuff still. Of course there is a 37mm option which fixes the lugs problem for smaller wrists.

    Nice watch. The IWC has a 120 hour power reserve. The reality is the dials are similar, maybe the Longines is slightly nicer. The movements don’t compare, IWC is far superior, plus IWC gives you an 8 year warranty. When your watch stops working after 5 or 6 years, that warranty is gold.

I like them both and Longines gives a lot of watch for the money, but the IWC is considered a higher level brand by most watch geeks.

    • @twosecondswatch

      To be honest, ETA movements are very much as reliable or more reliable than in house movements. They are workhorse movements. The Spirit is a great watch. The IWC is a great watch also, but for that kind of money, I could find more compelling options, it’s just that simple.
    That said, the IWC would likely fit you better. That Spirit is too large for you in terms of lug to lug. Doesn’t mean you can’t conceal it as mentioned in the comments, but dropping a couple grand on a watch, it could be the finest watch in the world, If the fit isn’t spot on, it’s a no go.
    Longines, from about 1800-3200 bucks, they are among the best. The long lugs contribute to the look of that watch no doubt, but in terms of fit, they undermine that process for a lot of people.

      @@twosecondswatch I was tossing up between the two for a few weeks. I ended up going with the Longines. I also love the design of the Oris, but when I held the Oris in the hand it felt less substantial compared to the Longines (weight, quality of the materials, feel in the hand/wrist). I feel the Oris should be a little lower in price than what they are being sold for, then I would definitely consider it.

      @@01rai01 Yes Oris prices have been creeping up a lot in the last few years. They used to be priced around Hamilton watches range and competing in that segment, but it seems their strategy is to now charge much more and go upmarket. Not so sure if their newer watches are as well made (I have handled some before including a review of the Oris Diver 65 which you can watch here th-cam.com/video/tlKYEt-Ak5k/w-d-xo.html). I do personally feel the Big Crown Date Pointer is priced a little too high at retail. • @Zuzoz
    @Zuzoz ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree the Spirit is very good, and the price/value ratio is much better than the Mark XX's. But I strongly disagree with the verdict on the movement. Saying that a 3.5 Hz movement with 72 hours power reserve is better than a 4 Hz movement with 120 hours, just because it's chronometer certified... it's just far-fetched. The higher frequency has a nice benefit esthetically, while the power reserves has a nice benefit practically in day-to-day life. On the other hand, a few seconds (theoretical) difference in accuracy has basically zero consequence in real life - other than in your mind.

    • @twosecondswatch

  • @Bonpu
    @Bonpu ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My gripe with the IWC is that it is what I call a "Disney watch", a retro design that resembles no historical watch at all. It is a bastard of WWII Luftwaffe B-Uhr design elements randomly mixed with post-war RAF watch details: The 12 o'clock marker, dagger hands, chunky strap are from the Nazi watch, the cross-shape lume pattern and crown are from the RAF Mark 11, the ostentatious 40 mm size matches neither, the childish back engraving of a Junkers 52 reminds of Pagani Design. There is nothing wrong with that and the result looks kind of fashionable - it is just something I would not pay more for than say $500 (the price of any fashion watch or a Seiko).
    To me the Longines is the more honest, more reasonable watch AND it is available in 37 mm which is the ideal size for an average 175 mm wrist and a modern mid-century-style three-hander. The new Hamilton Murph 38 looks even cleaner though at under $1000.

      A B-Uhr is 1 of the most popular watch designs around . IWC was 1 of the brands which did make those in WW2 if i am correct and making a adaption to present time does not make it bad . Want it closer to the original , choose Laco . Want a more classic approach but with the history , Stowa would be nice . Want just a nice B-Uhr , imho Steinhart would be the one. However , pure value wise ,IWC got the name and no matter how you feel or think about it , that is what it is . Why is a Rolex supposed to be worth more then Omega ? Because of the name , advertising the right people/product . In back to this topic , Longines made a killer watch , and besides this 1 they also got a Hydroconquest which is also very good VFM. They are doing spectacular things lately at Longines .

    I disagree, I've owned a Longines spirit 40mm and currently own an iwc mark 18. The iwc is better in every way, especially from a design perspective, no other pilots watch comes close to iwc. The ar coating on the iwc is much better, it has better case finishing, iron inner case, glass displacement protection, better strap, 28k movement so a smoother sweep, better case back, it's just a more luxurious product, brand prestige. For the money the Longines is really good, they need to get rid of the stars and the diamond hour markers as I feel like there is to much going on. The mark 20 is a lot better than the 18.

    The diminishing returns of the IWC Mark XX as compared to the Longines Spirit is evident. However, I disagree with you on the movement. Longines had to reduce the frequency to achieve 72 hours just like how Tissot reduced the frequency to achieve 80 hours on their Powermatic 80 Silicium movement. IWC has achieved a staggering 120 hours WITHOUT any reduction in frequency. Those well versed in watch movements would understand why a higher frequency is desirable for accuracy (the higher frequency means it can correct itself faster in case of any irregular behaviour), think Grand Seiko High Beat, Zenith movements. COSC Chronometer Certifications aren't everything especially when a sacrifice has to be made. Long story short, you're getting what you paid for, the Spirit has a good movement but the IWC has BETTER one.

    • @twosecondswatch
      @twosecondswatch  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I do agree that the movement beat rate has been slowed down for the Longines Spirit watch. There is significant improvements to the Mark XX and the increase of power reserve to 120 hours. However, I find that 120 hours power reserve is excessive and serves no real purpose. Honestly most people won't even notice 21,600 beat rate vs 28,800 anyway. They will however, notice if its keeping good time or not. :)

    • @kingnova117
      @kingnova117 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@twosecondswatch Valid point, most people will not notice the difference between 21,600 beat rate vs 28,800 UNLESS they look closely at the seconds hand (especially those obsessed with smooth sweeping seconds hand). As I said previously, a high frequency also helps a movement keep good time. An analogy mentioned in a recent video on Teddy Baldassare's channel, is, if a top is spinning slowly on a table and you slam the table, it is likely the top will tip over, however a top spinning quickly can correct itself and continue spinning.

    Hi everyone and thanks for watching the video and supporting the channel! Do subscribe as it helps me create more watch content!
    Since publishing this video I notice that there has been a lot of hate, and sometimes very strong opinions against this video.
    Let me clarify, I do not have anything against IWC the brand in general. My strong opinions is also because I love the IWC Mark series. I have owned IWC in the past and we also have sold the IWC Pilot Tribute to Mark 11 (which is based on the Mark 18) on our website. I have done a comprehensive written review on that watch which can be found on our website.
    If you like the IWC Pilot Mark XX, go for it! If you watch my video my arguments are mostly how IWC positions this watch model and how I feel the real winner and Pilot watch from IWC is no longer the Mark series but instead the Big Pilot 43. I feel the current generation Mark XX has lost its meaning/design compared to previous generations (which have the crosshair design) and is now being surpassed by newer and more creative designs - such as this Longines Spirit. To me if IWC re releases this watch with more design akin to the the crosshair one with modern updates - it would be much better - and at least make everything lumed.
    Comparatively the Longines Spirit has so many things to like about it and is a strong alternative contender if you’re looking for that kind of watch.
    In the end of the day, get the watch that speaks the most to you - and if budget permits, get both these watches. 😊

      Even though on paper it feels long/big, in real life wearing experience you don’t feel it on the wrist due to the curve of the lugs. The proportions are perfect in my opinion and on a strap it’s even less pronounced.

    The longines is nice, I just don’t like the 5 star rating on the dial 😂

    • @twosecondswatch
      @twosecondswatch  ปีที่แล้ว

      To me the 5 stars ⭐️ is what sets it apart from the other brands. It’s a little like the omega constellation series with their stars on the caseback, but this is on the dial. It does have historical reference though as I shared in the video.

    I bought the blue dialled version but it’s 100% going back. Although I really like this watch it has a number of fatal flaws. The movement. The rotor is both noisy and tinny cheap sounding. The COSC certificate seems to be a stretch since mine was running at +9s/day on a full daily wind. The case finishing looks good to the naked eye but break out a x10 loupe - the lug finishing on one end was fine but on the other it looked like someone had taken a metal nail file to the lug ends and filed off the metal surface in three planes. Ugly cheap and nasty finishing. The buckle on the strap had three small dings on it. All of this on a brand new watch just a joke. I’d also say the Longines 40mm wears more like a 38 or 39 at a push - more like a ladies size piece. Overall if you don’t have an eye for detail and willing to spend a couple of grand on a watch that doesn’t even keep time that well, despite the COSC chronometer claims and certificate which appears meaningless marketing, go ahead. But if you’re a watch purist like myself and like things to be high quality and engineered to perfection look elsewhere. Longines comes up short at a not inexpensive price tag. Better than IWC - c’mon man who are you kidding?

      Sounds like the watch you got was defective. I have experiences on QC with other brands as well such as Omega, Tudor, IWC.

      You’re clearly full of sh’t. You don’t own this watch. If you did, you would know that the movement doesn’t come with a COSC certification.

    Goodness both watches look amazing, I feel like the longings just took the Hamilton Khaki case and Put a different dial and Cosc movement. If I was buying one at retail I’d go with IWC. I wish both would use the 24hr numbers like the Hamilton does

      Sometimes, its the minor details that make the difference. Both these watches are military inspired in some sense so I suppose the will look very similar.

      @@twosecondswatch You really are utterly clueless. If you think that the finishing and dials are equal on these two brands then you are just totally and completely ignorant. Also, try comparing a longines bracelet to a IWC bracelet. They are leagues apart.

      The crown is quite a distinctive feature which I think is quite nice. It's the similar crown on the IWC Big Pilot 43.

    I've just bought a Grand Seiko Diver. Here are 5 reasons why it's better than Rolex Submariner.
    - Better movement (Spring Drive)
    - Better finish (Zaratsu polishing)
    - Has a power reserve indicator
    - Japanese heritage
    - Lower price
